The virtual reference services at home and abroad are described from the concepts of collaborative reference services on Web and the features of virtual reference services. The author proposed some suggestions for developing the virtual reference services in China.

The subject headings and subheadings oriented PubMed data-mining software can be used to search and calculate the strings of subject heading segment in MEDLINE format downloaded from PubMed to achieve data mining. It has three functions: 1. to analyze the frequency, and co-ordinate relation rate of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) in for further co-ordinate searching the downloaded records combined with MeSH and subheadings; 2. to analyze the distribution of factors such as drugs and their treatment process at different times; 3. to compare literature of a series of different factors in a same type (e.g. several drugs and their treatment process) to achieve their similarity.

This paper reviewed the origin, development, definition, and core ideas of evidence- based medicine (EBM) , the EBM practice and its main steps as well as the relations between the EBM practice and medical literature retrieval. To investigate the development of pediatrics,predicting the developing trend and providing scientific basis for the research in the field of pediatrics,the authors selected four core Chinese pediatric periodicals that were the Chinese Journal of Pediatrics from 1997 to 2001,the Journal of Clinical Pediatrics from 1996 to 2001,the Chinese Journal of Practical Pediatrics from 1999 to 2001,and the Journal of Applied Clinical Pediatrics from 1998 to 2001 as statistical sources,and searched all the literature by hand.A database was set up with Epi Info 6.0 Statistical Analysis Software.By which all the articles and their cited articles were marked in detail.Then,all the statistical indices such as articles,authors,subject headings,units and regions of the authors,fund items,co-authors,cooperative units,cited authors,cited periodicals and monographs were quantitatively analyzed and evaluated.Moreover,core periodicals published in China and foreign countries are preliminarily established and the main research fields of pediatrics are defined.

Compared and investigated in this paper are the amount and samples of the medical literature cited by each of CBM, China Journal Fulltext Database (CJFD) and China Scientific Journal Database (CSJD).
