My research program in psychoneuroendocrinology, a subdiscipline of psychology, has focused on the investigation of three areas of women's health. First, the authors have studied the role of androgen in female sexuality; second, the authors have investigated the effects of estrogen on mood in women, and more recently, the authors have demonstrated the conditions under which estrogen treatment would be neuroprotective with regard to cognitive functioning in aging women. The results of our own and of other researchers' studies in all three areas of psychoneuroendocrinology are discussed.
Objective: To compare analgesic effectiveness and level of patient satisfaction of pudendal block lidocaine/hyaluronidase with pudendal block lidocaine CO2 in women during normal labour.
Adolescents challenge our skills in communication, whether they are seen as gynaecological or obstetrical patients or in some other context. For the physician, it is important to keep developmental perspectives in mind, as well as to seek individual information regarding the particular teen’s milieu. It is also important to demonstrate a respectful attitude and ensure privacy and confidentiality. If the adolescent is pregnant, there are additional considerations, including the need for support from social workers and nutritionists, teen-centred preparation for delivery, testing for sexually transmitted disease, and skill development for parenting. Other areas for exploration are substance abuse, eating disorders, and domestic violence.
Various cerium doped aluminosilicate glass was prepared by a high-temperature melting method using natural granite material as the only origin of the glass substrate. TG-DSC was used to understand the changes of this aluminosilicate material in the melting process. The structure of the glass was systematically studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra. This type of aluminosilicate material begins to vitrify at about 1000 °C, and its maximum vitrification degree was obtained at 1500 °C. The structure of the glassy waste forms prepared at this temperature is mainly composed of Q3 and Q4 structural units. With the addition of cerium ions, the proportion can even reach 82%. Such good glass integrity makes this type of aluminosilicate glass density and hardness up to 2.89 g cm−3 and 7.80 GPa, respectively. However, the addition of excessive cerium ions destroys the integrity of the network, resulting in that the glass can only carry 17 wt% cerium ions at most. At this point, 55.93% of Ce4+ ions are reduced to Ce3+. In the meantime, cerium ions are evenly distributed in the glass network. This study provides a strategy for the treatment of radioactive waste with similar properties with cerium ions.
Background: Six clinical practice guidelines have been established for ovarian cancer surgery. Population-based studies suggest that these are not being followed.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of sacral nerve stimulation using a permanent implantable system in the treatment of intractable urge incontinence, urgency, frequency, and nocturia.
Improved ultrasound technology and increased availability have made ultrasound diagnosis of pregnancy loss, fetal abnormalities, and other pregnancy complications more common. The physician’s understanding of how to give pregnancy-related bad news is increasingly important. A compassionate and informative method of breaking bad news, particular to the type of news, the anxiety level of the woman, the comfort level of the physician, and the resources that are available for emotional support for the woman, is essential. Although studied in oncology, strategies for the communication of abnormal ultrasound information during pregnancy are scarce. We suggest a therapeutic approach to the giving of bad news at the time of obstetrical ultrasound.
Thrombophilias are a diverse group of coagulation disorders that predispose to venous and arterial thrombosis. These hypercoagulable states have been shown to have important implications in perinatal medicine as they are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, placental abruption and recurrent miscarriage. This article reviews the thrombophilias reported and their associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes.
