Introduction: The previous researches have recorded positive associations between periodontal disease (PD) and risk of cancer at various locations. The aim of the present case–control study was to investigate the possible associations between PD indices and the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) development in a sample of Greek outpatients referred to a medical and dental private practice. Materials and Methods: A total of 342 individuals were interviewed and underwent an oral clinical examination, and 85 of them were suffered from CRC at various anatomic locations. The evaluation of the possible associations between CRC and PD indices was performed using a regression analysis model. Results: Clinical attachment loss (CAL) (P = 0.042, odds ratio [OR] = 1.78, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02–3.11) was significantly associated with the risk of developing CRC. CRC family history (P = 0.002, OR = 2.33, 95% CI = 1.35–4.03) and smoking (P = 0.019, OR = 1.96, 95% CI = 1.12–3.45) were also significantly associated with the mentioned risk, whereas smoking was found to be nota confounder regarding the estimated association between moderate/severe CAL with the risk of developing CRC. Conclusion: CAL as an index for PD severity was statistically significantly associated with the risk of developing CRC.
Introduction: Assessment of delivered service in health care institutions and patient satisfaction as an indicator of quality are important. Objective: This study aimed at analyzing satisfaction of outpatients who got healthcare service in a military hospital. Methods: This research was conducted in the biggest military hospital in Turkey, Gulhane Military Medicine Academy. 1000 outpatients who got healthcare service during 2015 were included in this study. Questionnaire form was used as a data collection tool. Results: Of participants, 53.7% were male, 36% were 41 years old or older, 67.7% were married, 45.8% had bachelor or master degree, 56.4% were employed with social security insurance, 42.1% were civil servant and 70.5% applied to this hospital before. Discussion: As a result of this study, it was found that outpatient satisfaction level was good and it varied in term of age and social security status. Health care managers and professionals attach importance to subjects which improve patient satisfactions, such as communication, hygiene, waiting time, privacy is crucial.
The Evaluation of Information Requirements of the Intensive Care Nurses in End-Stage Renal Failure Patients’ Care Purpose: This study was conducted to assess the information requirements of the intensive care nurses in caring of end-stage renal failure patients. Material and Method: This descriptive study was conducted in a teaching and research hospital. The practice has been completed with 133 nurses. Data collection form consists of 54 questions. Results: Twenty participants are male, mean age 28.2 ± 5.6 and 60.2% of the participants works in the surgical ICU. Average correct count is 32.7 ± 4,5 (min=11-max=40), the most correct answer count is 33 (n = 25). More than half of the nurses (55.6%) know how to control the arteriovenous fistula. However, 73.7% of the nurses do not feel competent themselves in ESRD patients care and 36.1% of the cases gave the wrong answer to the question about the need to use masks while doing hemodialysis catheter dressing. A statistically significant relationship were found between receiving training about ESRD and the count of correct answer (p=0.011). There is no statistically significant relationship between working time in intensive care unit, full operating time and the count of correct answer (p=0.45). Conclusion: Most of the participants (80%) answered at least 70% of the knowledge questions about ESRD correctly. It is suggested that standards must be created utilizing clinical practice guidelines to increase the effectiveness of nursing care. Education changes perceptions about issues especially in critical units such as intensive care units and acts by increasing the knowledge. There should be multidisciplinary training programs about ESRD and training programs should be organized related to the subject to intensive care staff.
ABSTRACT:Complications of tattooing can be related to various physiopathological processes ranging from local and systemic infections (the most frequent) to masses like seborrheic keratosis, dermatofibroma and epidermal cysts, and from pathologies like psoriasis, lichen planus and vitiligo to psychological problems in the literature. There has been reports of photo-allergic reactions and granulomas, and malignant tumors such as squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma developing on top of tattoos. In order to draw attention to complications related to tattooing, which is observed particularly in young population especially in recent years, and used frequently in eastern and southern-east regions of Turkey, we present our case who developed mass lesion after tattooing.
Introduction: Cultural competency is a term that is widely used regarding health care providers around the world. As a consequence, a plethora of new instruments have been introduced in order to describe, evaluate and measure the new term of cultural competence. Objective: This study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of the Clinical Cultural Competency Questionnaire-Greek version (CCCQ-G) among Healthcare Professionals. Methods: Two hundred and twenty (220) health professionals, from three (3) general pediatric hospitals in Greece completed the questionnaire. Internal consistency was determined and convergent validity was further examined with the intercorrelations of subscales. The structure of the questionnaire was investigated using factor analysis. Results: Analysis resulted in a six-factor solution, explaining 55 % of the variance. All subscales resulting from the factor analysis had alphas that ranged from 0.71 to 0.91. Correlations among the scales were all statistically significant. Higher scores in most subscales were observed for health care professionals who had attended transcultural health courses. Conclusions: The Greek version of CCCQ was found to possess good reliability and validity, therefore, the instrument could be used in future research studying cultural competence of health care professionals.
Objective: Disability is one of the significant problems that the public faces as regards social aspects, economics, public health and politics. Our aim was to review the prevalence of diseases causing disabilities in young adult men who are declared "unfit for military service" in Turkey after medical examination. Methods: We reviewed the prevalence of diseases among 113,175 young adult men who were referred for medical examination between 2009 and 2011.Results: Prevalence of unfitness for military service was 5.56% in 2009, 6.74% in 2010 and 6.77% in 2011. Leading causes for young adult men to be rejected from military service was intellectual disability 6.88, hearing loss 3.71, epilepsy 1.59, schizophrenia 1.54 and diabetes mellitus 1.47 per thousand people. Conclusion: Screening for the prevalence of disability conditions is an important data source for policies to be developed. Supporting such survey with community based studies in different populations in future shall be beneficial for improvement of policies in social and health fields.
Introduction: Huge dilatacion of the azygos vein (Aneurysms of the azygos vein) are rare and can sometimes mimic a paratracheal or posterior mediastinal mass. Objective: It is important to confirm the diagnosis with radiologic tools before performing invasive procedures, which carry the risk of hemorrhage. Discussion: The usual diagnosis of a mediastinal mass by mediastinoscopy or percutaneous fine-needle aspiration or biopsy is very hazardous if there is a venous varix. Noninvasive thoracic contrast CT scanning is a safe and better choice for diagnosis.
