Despite consensus on the vital role of extensive reading in L2 vocabulary development, there is limited guidance for teachers in choosing suitable reading materials. Scholars have characterized L2 literary texts as ideal for extensive reading, highlighting benefits such as improved word knowledge and enhanced reading comprehension. However, they also recognize two challenges for learners reading L2 literature: its linguistic complexity and its cultural remoteness. One proposed solution is for learners to read L1 literature in L2 translation. Through lexical analysis of four English translations of Murasaki Shikibu’s The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari), this study explored the feasibility of such an approach in a Japanese EFL context. Specifically, it determined how much vocabulary knowledge was needed to read each translation, and to what extent the translations differed in lexical range and diversity. These findings offer insight into how individual literary translations can differ in their suitability for L2 learners.
A substantial body of literature exists extolling the many physiological, psychological, and social benefits that camping and other nature-based social excursions offer participants, including a small but growing number of studies revealing positive outcomes for language learners in these environments. However, there are currently few resources available that detail how to effectively begin offering such experiences to learners in educational organizations where none currently exist. This paper demonstrates how a structured approach to event planning helped create a series of ongoing excursions that are designed to foster intercultural awareness and language learning outside the classroom. It briefly describes the rationale for conducting nature-based excursions, outlines steps taken to ensure sufficient funding and participation, and addresses challenges faced throughout the process including accurate budgeting and effective procurement. Detailed and transparent reporting of these crucial aspects will be of use to professionals who are interested in developing their own programs.
Intermediate language learners often encounter periods of challenge characterized by feelings of stagnation and frustration, often termed a “plateau.” Building on Brown and Lee’s (2015) framework, this paper examines the emotional, motivational, and linguistic obstacles that stall learners’ progress—including persistent gaps in vocabulary, grammar, and communicative fluency. To address these challenges, the paper proposes targeted group strategies, such as the Cascading Method and collaborative homework tasks, which promote cooperation and deep learning. These methods create a supportive learning environment and assist students in overcoming specific linguistic hurdles, guiding them toward higher proficiency levels. The paper underscores the necessity for educators to be aware of this phenomenon and to implement proactive strategies that facilitate learners’ transition from intermediate to advanced levels. Keywords: intermediate plateau, language learning plateau, proficiency development, motivation in language learning, group-based strategies
This case study explores how relational, connective instructional practices shape classroom conditions in which intrinsic motivation for learning the target language can take root. The study was conducted with first-year non-English-major EFL students at a Japanese university who had previously struggled with English and were placed in lower-level classes. A motivation survey administered three times during the year identified one class in which all students showed increases in intrinsic motivation, including those who initially reported low motivation. The study analyzed the narrative of a focal teacher through the conceptual lenses of connective instruction and discomfort. Findings reveal that the teacher’s practices reflected the interpersonal, substantive, and instructional dimensions of connective instruction. Those practices fostered a classroom where beginner-level students engaged in meaningful tasks, built inclusive relationships, and received recognition of their individual strengths. These practices appeared to help students overcome linguistic discomfort and develop positive experiences with using English in contexts in which target-language use outside the classroom is limited.
This study examines the pragmatic challenges faced by Japanese learners of Italian in performing request acts, focusing on their cultural background. Using the methodology developed by the GPP (Grupo de Pesquisa em Pragmática) research team at the University of São Paulo, data from twenty B1–B2 learners were collected through three instruments: MCDCT (multiple-choice), WDCT (free-response), and TAP (think-aloud protocol). The analysis revealed three major tendencies: non-realization of the act in high-imposition contexts, over-indirectness through layered conditionals and prefaces, and implicit strategies that rely on the interlocutor’s inference. These features reflect pragmatic transfer influenced by Japanese norms of uchi and soto (in-group vs. out-group) and conventional politeness routines. In contrast, the Italian notion of Bella figura emphasizes clarity, appropriate directness, and positive self-presentation. Based on these findings, this paper proposes pedagogical approaches aimed at enhancing learners’ pragmatic competence and fostering culturally adaptive communication in Italian.
