Abstract This interdisciplinary article offers a Kleinian interpretation of Italo Calvino's Il visconte dimezzato (1952), a text that lends itself remarkably well to her object-relational psychoanalytic model. In particular, it explores how Calvino appears to embrace Klein's paradigm of psychological development, with its movement from the paranoid-schizoid position to the depressive position, which is crucial for the survival of modern society. Writing in the aftermath of World War II, both Klein and Calvino shared deep convictions about humanity and hope for the future of society. And both believed that in order for society to cope with the sequelae of ongoing ideological clashes, we all need to engage in honest self-reflection in order to become whole or at least more wholly aware of what we disavow and project onto each other. Reading and mourning, two intimately involved activities, are explored here as Calvino's and Klein's suggested path to recovery. And finally, this article offers ways that Klein's constructs, which continue to play prominent roles in contemporary psychoanalysis, might be used more broadly in literary and sociopolitical analysis.
Abstract Southern Italy has frequently been associated with a rhetoric of backwardness and immobility, which constructs the region as the opposite of the modern and productive North. However, a cultural and epistemological reinvention of the South is taking place today. This trend is reflected especially in the films of Emma Dante and Valentina Pedicini. This article analyzes Pedicini's Era ieri (2016) and Dante's Le sorelle Macaluso (2020) and, in doing so, it argues firstly that both films contest a stereotyped view of Southern Italy by focusing on queer girlhood and lesbian desire. Secondly, the article contends that both films present the Mediterranean Sea as not just a key element for a Southern epistemology but also a central conductor for queer temporality. Ultimately, this article asserts that the temporalities represented by Dante and Pedicini disrupt the anti-meridionalist image of Southern immobility by promoting a fluid present-ness.
Abstract Giovanni Verga's novel I Malavoglia (1881) depicts the conflict between the traditional way of life of a family of Sicilian fishermen and the arrival of modern bourgeois values following Sicily's incorporation into the newly founded Kingdom of Italy (1861). I argue that to fully understand Verga's representation of the advent of modernity and its shattering effects on the archaic world of the village of Aci Trezza, it is necessary to examine how it fractures the relationship between the Malavoglia family and the sea, thereby disrupting the equilibrium their community has long maintained with the natural environment. Combining ecocriticism and Mediterranean studies, I offer an original reading of the two shipwrecks of La Provvidenza, the Malavoglia family's boat. These shipwrecks result from modernity forcing the fishermen to overstep invisible boundaries that once ensured a harsh but functional balance in their relationship with the sea and shaped the Malavoglia family's way of life.
Abstract Women writers have frequently depicted abortion and pregnancy loss, and in so doing have influenced one another. French author Colombe Schneck dedicates Seventeen (2015) to Annie Ernaux and repeatedly evokes Ernaux's Happening (2000). Yet there is an unnamed author who comes to mind in reading Seventeen: the Italian Oriana Fallaci. Fallaci's Lettera a un bambino mai nato (1975) is conjured up in several ways. This article looks at Fallaci's influence on Schneck through the lens of autobiographical and trauma theory. I posit that Seventeen often echoes Lettera in a riveting intertextual dialogue. I also argue that Schneck diverges from Fallaci in crucial ways that speak to her purpose as a writer. Schneck seems to resist a confrontational tone, one so characteristic of Fallaci, and instead opts for a melancholic tenor tinged with gratitude. Ultimately, a sense of agency permeates all of these works, which are indebted to the women's movement.
