The study “Extended Reality Technology and Recipients Research in Migration Studies” is designed to explore whether Extended Reality technologies (XR) can be used to address and raise awareness about social issues, as well as to gain insights into conditions that are crucial for developing critical thinking. The main question that guided this study was whether Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have the potential to support the critical understanding and reading of social phenomena. This article presents how XR technology (360-degree video and AR application) have been used to identify forms of articulation concerning refugee flight and migration. Based on a Latent-Class Analysis, we describe four types of articulation, using typical text features and examples.
The text focusses on the core passage of the IHRA-working definition on antisemitism. In it, it describes a problematic affinity to a correspondence theory of antisemitism. Moreover, the IHRA-definition is shown to depend on a hierarchical relation between (sense) perception, language and violence which does not convince on closer inspection. Hence, the text exposes an understanding of antisemitism which leads to an individualized psychologism that ignores the social and cultural conditions of its emergence.
The paper examines Peter Ullrich’s expert opinion on the IHRA definition. It reviews his rejection of the definition in the conflict over a viable and complex definition of antisemitism. Ullrich does not sufficiently appreciate the first international definition of antisemitism and has an undefined concept of Israel-related antisemitism. Moreover, he does not make his own positioning in the recurring controversies surrounding contemporary antisemitism adequately transparent. His expertise should be interpreted as both a scientific and a political intervention.
The “Working Definition of Antisemitism” of the “International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance” not only leads to scientific controversies between its proponents and critics, it also – at least indirectly – plays an important role for the financing of institutions with public funds. Against this background, in 2019 Peter Ullrich had presented a study with a critical assessment of the IHRA Working Definition. Sina Arnold, Dana Ionescu, Uffa Jensen, Keith Kahn-Harris and again Peter Ullrich refer to this in their contributions. The dossier aims to contribute to a more objective debate and thus to the possibility of a conversation between controversial positions on the definition of antisemitism.
While the critical debates around the IHRA Working Definition – for example in the form of Peter Ullrich’s expert opinion – are an intellectual step forward, it is often forgotten that the definition was primarily developed for practical use: as a manageable definition for practitioners in the field of education, the judiciary or public authorities. For further work with and on definitions it is necessary, on the one hand, to bear in mind the need for orientation in this practical work against antisemitism. On the other hand, more emphasis should be placed on “taking into account the overall context”, as demanded by the definition itself. Rather than understanding the illustrative examples of contemporary antisemitism as a simple checklist, their discursive and social context needs to be analysed.
Behind the dispute about definitions of antisemitism we can detect a deep conceptual divide. The paper outlines the development of two distinct and incommensurable families of concepts of antisemitism: substantial and abstract-formal concepts. The semantic core of substantial concepts consists in hostility towards Jews (or Judaism) as Jews (where Jews may also be replaced by substitutes like Israel). In the recent past, mediated by bridging concepts like communication latency, abstract-formal concepts of antisemitism have emerged. In certain forms of criticism towards Israel these concepts consider antisemitic they merely see a historical connection to hatred of Jews. However, hostility towards Jews is no longer a necessary property of the concept. This axiomatic divide blocks the research on and the fight against antisemitism on an analytical and ethical level. What is needed is transparency about the basis of the conversation and a recognition that these two families of concepts exist.
Drawing on the work of Antonio Gramsci and liberation scholars from Latin America, this article examines the role of social work, as both an academic discipline and a practice, in the context of the recent refugee crisis. This role mirrors the historical development of social work and is further highlighted by recent empirical studies of refugee experiences on Greek islands. The authors call for an active political coalition between social work practitioners and refugees, with the aim of empowering the latter in their quest for liberation from the regime of European refugee management.
The debate about the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism (IHRA) has generally focused on the meaning of the definition itself and the consequences of its adoption or non-adoption by institutions. Yet we know very little of how IHRA is applied in practice by institutions that adopt it. This article discusses the case of Professor David Miller of Bristol University, where the adoption of IHRA by the university did not prevent his absolution (subsequently overturned by the university) from accusations of antisemitism by one legal opinion that made reference to IHRA itself. This incident demonstrates the possibility that institutions might ‘subvert’ or simply neglect IHRA when dealing with accusations of antisemitism. This possibility is rarely mentioned by activist proponents and opponents of IHRA. There is therefore an urgent need for empirical research into the ways IHRA is understood and applied by institutions that have adopted it.
Will the “precariat” – Guy Standing’s “class in the making” – be able to function as a catalyst for social change? This question led us to deal with precarious population groups and examine their attitudes towards social injustice. Our research was carried out on two different groups of people who work and live under precarity conditions. It has been found that there are elements in society that not only passivize precarious subjects, entrapping them in a sense of the “inevitable”, but also function to corrode the solidarity among these subjects themselves. Precarious subjects are prone to rationalize alienation and tend to compromise with the “expropriation” of their anger. The purpose of our survey is to discover what this issue might mean, if studied from the Critical Pedagogy perspective.
Although there has been a broad and controversial debate on the concept of integration in social science over the last couple of decades, the methodological debate on how to measure the processual, contingent side of integration is still in its infancy. This has become especially relevant against the background of newly introduced more dynamic and more contingent theoretical perspectives on integration. Against this backdrop, the paper sets out to critically reflect on the methodological implications of the liquid integration perspective. We argue for a practice research perspective regarding emic and etic idiosyncratic perceptions and understandings of integration in order to better research the processing and contingent side of temporally embedded integration processes and experiences and to invigorate critical reflection on methodological issues in researching integration.
