Geodiversity, the foundation of geotourism, includes geological, geomorphological, and hydrological elements that, when integrated with ecological and cultural aspects, offer unique opportunities for sustainable tourism. In the Quarta Colônia Geopark, located in Rio Grande do Sul, the geotourism evaluation method developed by Kubalíková et al. (2021) was applied, considering scientific, educational, added, touristic, and conservation values. The analysis revealed that 70% of the geosites have medium geotourism potential, with an emphasis on educational and added values. However, there was a recognized need for investment in infrastructure and legal protection. Spatial and Cluster analyses provided guidelines for strategic geotourism planning, emphasizing the balance between tourism use and conservation, as well as suggesting actions to enhance sustainability and the positive impact of the geopark. Keywords: thematic planning; spatial analysis; geotourism assessment; geosites; UNESCO Geopark.
Family succession is a constant challenge on rural properties, influenced by educational, personal and economic factors. In view of this, this study aimed to analyze the intention of rural producers' children to remain in family farming after completing higher education. The sampling was by convenience, with questionnaires sent by institutional leaders and course coordinators, totaling 192 participants, of which 55 met the research criteria from two higher education institutions in southern Brazil. It used a qualitative-quantitative approach, combining inductive qualitative analysis of students' responses and descriptive statistics for quantitative interpretation of the data. In this way, it sought to understand to what extent different factors influence the decision of young people to remain in rural areas. The results highlight that approximately 35.9% of the interviewees expressed a desire to return to the rural property after completing higher education. It is important to highlight that 48.7% of the participants mentioned that the activity on the rural property is promising. Although the data reveal a balance between the reasons for choosing the type of university education with the aim of returning to the farm (41%) or changing industry (49%), it is clear that parents exert considerable influence in guiding their children towards the value of academic knowledge. The decision to remain in agriculture suggests that education provides the tools and knowledge necessary to innovate and make agricultural practices more efficient and sustainable. Keywords: succession planning; agricultural modernization; rural exodus; migration.
This article presents a systematic literature review on gentrification in the context of creative cities, understood as a process that transforms lower-income neighborhoods into more valued areas, often resulting in the displacement of local communities. Using the Bibliometrix package, operationalized in R/RStudio with the Biblioshiny interface, an initial sample of 265 articles indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases was analyzed, covering a 21-year period (2003-2024). As its main scientific contribution, the study systematizes the international body of research by identifying and organizing four central analytical axes that structure the contemporary debate on gentrification in creative cities, while also proposing a critical research agenda focused on examining the contradictions between urban development, creativity, and social justice. The results indicate that, although creative city policies are often promoted as drivers of economic development and social inclusion, in practice they tend to prioritize investors’ interests, contributing to the marginalization of existing residents. The study concludes that it is necessary to rethink urban policies to ensure that urban regeneration processes are more equitable and sustainable, effectively incorporating the needs of local communities. Keywords: creative cities; smart cities; gentrification; urban creativity; systematic literature review.
Sustainable regional development is vital for a region to attract investment, generate income and reduce poverty rates. The objective of this research was to identify how the Bioceanic Route has been developing, in a sustainable manner, in compliance with the SDGs (sustainable development goals), entrepreneurship and income generation in the cities of Porto Murtinho and Campo Grande. The methodology used was an exploratory study based on secondary data, also using documentary research. The results indicate that the cities of Campo Grande and Porto Murtinho need to develop public policies that improve the indicators contained in SDGs 8, 9, 11 and 17, so that they can achieve sustainable economic development, allowing them to attract investments that increase the relevance of these cities to the Bioceanic Route. Finally, we present the main opportunities for sustainable regional development based on the study carried out. Keywords: sustainable development; territorial planning; SDGs; regional governance; economic integration.
Matopiba has consolidated as Brazil's main agricultural frontier, but studies on the role of irrigation in the spatial dynamics of soybeans are scarce. The regional economics literature highlights that processes of productive concentration and diffusion are central to understanding this dynamics. Given this gap, two questions were asked: (i) to what extent did irrigation influence the concentration or dispersion of soybeans? (ii) how did these patterns evolve between 2006 and 2019? The objective is to analyze the spatial patterns of irrigated soybeans in Matopiba during those years. The Global and Local Moran Index with Ward's hierarchical clustering were used in the analysis. Results show positive spatial autocorrelation in both years, though less intense in 2019, suggesting the beginning of deconcentration. High-high clusters persist in Luís Eduardo Magalhães, Correntina, and Barreiras, while Riachão das Neves gains prominence. It is concluded that, despite the persistence of traditional nuclei, irrigation diffusion is observed, revealing regional structural changes. Keywords: Matopiba region; irrigated agriculture; irrigated soybean; spatial autocorrelation.
Natural resources, history, and culture can be used as a basis for structuring the supply of products and services. The objective of this article is to explore the transformations in the dynamics of rural social life and establish the connection with the development of services in tourism enterprises in the Caminhos da Fronteira region - Santa Catarina. The data collection involved semi-structured interviews with twenty-eight managers of tourism enterprises in eighteen municipalities. By reconstructing the history of regional formation, it is demonstrated that elements of nature, history and rural social life are considered resources to support the supply of services. As in other regions, the data collected show that tourism in rural environments has been expanding and diversifying. The supply of each enterprise tends to start with different resources, and the choice for greater specialization depends on the demand and the conditions of the family to provide the supply. Keywords: agroturism; territory; basket of territorial goods and services.
For decades, many policies for the tourism sector have been developed in Brazil. Among some particularities, the focus of many of them was on developing the sector regionally. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the tourism sector in the Vales do Iguaçu Tourist Region, located in the state of Paraná, considering its locational, structural and spatial dynamics, during the period between 2012 and 2021. Therefore, the procedure methodological approach was based on regional analysis indicators. In general, the results obtained demonstrated that, after a period of ten years, the sector in the region analyzed continued to be concentrated in a few municipalities, thus not being noticed any effects of boost, spillover to neighboring municipalities or even connection between the activities analyzed. In practice, the results can help local decision-makers and other interested parties to first gain knowledge about the scenario and, therefore, act more assertively when it comes to planning and expanding the tourism sector in the region in the coming years. Keywords: regional development; tourism; Vales do Iguaçu Tourist Region.
The study aimed to diagnose and classify the segments of the Caiçara Cycle Tourism Route on the coast of Paraná, focusing on cyclists' perceptions and the guidelines of NBR 15.509-2 Cycle Tourism, Part 2: Route Classification (ABNT, 2017). The research involved a 430 km expedition for data collection and segment classification based on criteria such as environmental severity, orientation, technical difficulty, physical effort, and spatial analyses. Results identified critical segments like Superagui – Praia Deserta, Antonina – Morretes – Limeira, and Limeira – Garuva, which had higher severity due to the lack of shoulders, slippery surfaces, and poor road conditions. Conversely, segments such as Matinhos – Pontal do Paraná and Garuva – Guaratuba – Matinhos were classified with lower severity despite challenges like compromised safety and inadequate signage. This study provides a preliminary foundation for implementing the Caiçara Route and supports the development of cycle tourism and sustainable mobility along the Paraná coast. Keywords: cycling mobility; sustainable development; sustainable mobility; territorial sustainability; community-based tourism.
In Brazil, soybean production has been rapidly expanding, increasingly concentrated among medium and large rural producers. In family farming, this cultivation has been marked, on one hand, by movements towards professionalization and productive specialization, or on the other hand, by dynamics of exclusion and exit from the activity. Despite these two predominant trajectories, this research focuses on contexts where soybeans take different paths within family farming. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the dynamics and distinct roles of soybean production in the social reproduction strategies of family farmers, specifically looking at small-scale soybean growers who have continued cultivating soybeans on areas smaller than ten hectares over time. For this purpose, bibliographic research and secondary data analysis were conducted, in addition to field research in Salvador das Missões (RS) in 2003 and 2018, where seven farming families were selected for continuing small-scale soybean cultivation during both periods analyzed. The results show that among the families studied, soybean production has remained present as part of a mosaic of multiple and interconnected activities and income sources. In these cases, soybeans did not necessarily promote a process of specialization or depeasantization, being part of a broader set of different social reproduction strategies for family farmers. Keywors: family farming; productive specialization; soybeans; Rio Grande do Sul.
In the face of increasing urbanization and environmental pressures, urban forests are emerging as strategic allies for smart and sustainable cities. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the integration of digital technologies in the management of these spaces. This study maps the interactions between urban forests and smart, sustainable cities, emphasizing the role of emerging digital technologies. Through a Scoping Review, a portfolio of articles was constructed to explore the application of technological solutions, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in the monitoring and management of urban forests. The analysis highlights that these innovations enhance sustainability, resilience, and urban well-being. Furthermore, the importance of smart governance, strategic urban planning, and citizen participation in the effective integration of these technologies is emphasized. The review provides insights for future research and public policies aimed at promoting more sustainable and resilient cities. Keywords: Smart and Sustainable Cities. Urban Forests. The study investigates the perception of farmers from Mogi das Cruzes, Biritiba Mirim, and Salesópolis regarding the adoption of Agroforestry Systems (AFS) with native species of the Atlantic Forest, using the Theory of Planned Behavior. The Atlantic Forest, which concentrates a large portion of Brazil's population and GDP, is a biodiversity hotspot threatened by anthropogenic pressure, with the Green Belt in the Alto Tietê Region (SP) being essential for water capture and agricultural activity. Despite challenges such as a lack of resources and low perceived control, over 50% of the farmers demonstrate a high intention (mean 4.0; mode 5) to adopt or improve AFS. Farmers hold a positive attitude toward the environmental benefits and the enhancement of local products, although they identify challenges regarding profitability. The influence of family and friends, the sense of moral obligation, identification as rural producers, and both economic and ecological motivations reinforce this disposition, highlighting the need for integrated public policies that promote incentives, training, and access to resources for environmental sustainability and socioeconomic development. Keywords: regional development; agroforestry systems; territorial sustainability.
The objective of this study was to analyze the economic dynamics of the açaí marketing channels, highlighting the importance of this production chain for the local economy and the livelihood of family farmers. Methodologically, the research is qualitative and descriptive, based on in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and secondary data analysis. Data were collected from various agents involved in the açaí production chain. The results reveal that the açaí production chain in Concórdia/PA connects extractive producers, family farmers, intermediaries, agro-industries, and end consumers, and the channels vary from direct sales at local markets to contracts with agro-industries and international exports. However, strengthening this chain depends on investments in infrastructure, technical assistance, innovation, and community organization to ensure the sustainability and appreciation of the product in the domestic and international markets. Keywords: family agriculture; agricultural marketing; rural development; rural economy.
This study aims to analyze the constraints on the production value of temporary tasks in family farming in the Nordeste, with a breakdown between the semi-arid and non-semi-arid regions in the years 2006 and 2017. The data used comes from the Agricultural Censuses of 2006 and 2017, made available by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). To achieve the proposed objective, the multiple regression methodology was used with panel data, where the production value of temporary family farming tasks was used as the dependent variable. Explanatory variables included employed personnel, harvested area, dummies related to the intensity of technical guidance, crop guidance, presence of cooperatives and location of municipalities in semi-arid regions or not. The random effects model was the one that best fit the data. The results for the Nordeste, in general, indicated that all coefficients were statistically significant at the 1% level, with the exception of the dummy referring to the presence of cooperatives, which did not present statistical significance. Not with regard to semi-arid and non-semi-arid regions, the variables that developed the most positively for the value of production were the harvested area and crop rotations. Furthermore, crop rotation had a more significant impact on the value of production than technical assistance, both in the Nordeste as a whole and in the semi-arid region. Finally, the non-semi-arid region stood out as the most suitable northeastern location for adding value to the production of temporary tasks within the typology considered. The findings provide support for the formulation of more effective public policies aimed at valuing family farming by encouraging productive diversification and expanding cultivated areas based on sustainable practices. Keywords: family farming; regional development; nordeste municipalities; panel data.
In view of the growing global concern about water, energy, and food security, this study aims to propose an index capable of assessing in an integrated manner the interrelationships between these three sectors in the city of Curitiba, Paraná. To this end, 470 articles published between 2018 and 2023 were analyzed, from which the most relevant indicators related to the water-energy-food (WEF) nexus were extracted. The data were collected from official platforms such as IBGE, COPEL, INMET, and the City of Curitiba. The methodology adopted combines Commitment Programming with the Mahalanobis distance and Pareto thresholds, allowing a geometric and normalized analysis of urban sustainability. The construction of the index aims not only to quantify the current situation of the city, but also to highlight the critical points that compromise its autonomy. The results demonstrate that Curitiba has low sustainability in the three sectors, revealing a strong dependence on external resources for water, energy, and food supply. The conclusion indicates that, despite the recognition of sustainability, the municipality faces significant structural limitations, which compromise its functioning in the face of future crises. The proposed index appears to be a strategic tool to support integrated urban planning and the formulation of more efficient public policies. Keywords: nexus; WEF; indicator; sustainability.
Natural disasters have been increasing in both number and monetary losses in Brazil in recent decades. On the other hand, Brazilians' environmental awareness has been little related to the occurrence of these disasters. Based on this, the objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between natural disasters and the population's perception of environmental issues in Brazil and in the five major Brazilian regions. For this, the Ordinary Least Squares Model (OLS) was used. Disasters classified as climatological were the most frequent, with emphasis on droughts and dry spells. The Northeast and South regions recorded the highest number of occurrences and monetary losses. This result helps to understand what the regressions show. Considering the national data, awareness of environmental issues is associated especially with the number of monetary losses suffered by disasters. The data aggregated by region, on the other hand, allow us to conclude that environmental awareness is more correlated with natural disasters in places where these disasters are more frequent, especially if they result in high monetary losses, as in the case of the South and Northeast. Keywords: natural disasters; environmental perception; monetary losses. Brazil; brazilian regions.
This paper is a systematic review of the financial management in farms. This review aims to gather and select articles discussing the implementation of projects and management qualification programs for farmers, which aim to manage the land and the production. The methodology used in this research is the search and assortment of papers, first on the basis Web of Science and further on Capes basis and Google Scholar. The search results brought 16 papers published between 2000 and 2023 and wrote by Brazilian authors. From the results was possible to identify four focuses of interest: the education level of the farmers; the tools, methods, and management techniques; accounting; costs; training and ATER. The main conclusion identifies a lack of management ability on the farms. This fact leads to the need for studies to investigate the causes of this deficit as well as the development of projects and programs to repair that. Keywords: management programs; technical assistance; family farming; sustainability.
Nearly a decade after the establishment of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda, its implementation remains uneven, particularly at the local level, and is still partially unknown among public managers, institutions, and civil society, even within the state of Santa Catarina. In this context, the objective of this study was to group the municipalities of Santa Catarina through cluster analysis, based on their performance in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations. The analysis employed Ward’s hierarchical clustering method, resulting in the formation of six relatively homogeneous clusters. An examination of the most densely populated clusters revealed significant variation in municipal scores, which prompted a qualitative deepening focused on SDG 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities. The findings contribute to the identification of patterns and discrepancies in municipal performance, offering support for strategic decision-making, including investment planning and the formulation of more effective and targeted public policies aimed at sustainability. A key limitation lies in the analysis being restricted to only two clusters and the exclusive focus on SDG 11. Furthermore, the study highlights that the adoption of nationally standardized indicators does not always align with the realities of small municipalities, thereby compromising the accuracy of measurements. Although Santa Catarina demonstrates overall progress toward the 2030 Agenda goals, significant challenges remain regarding the adequacy of indicators to local contexts and the capacity of small municipalities to effectively measure and implement actions toward sustainable development. Keywords: 2030 agenda. Sustainable Development Goals. SDG 11. cluster analysis. municipal development.
The correlation between territory, heritage and territorial development, in general, is little examined. More common are distinct approaches that focus on one or another of these theoretical categories individually, requiring advances in a multidimensional and interdisciplinary perspective. The purpose of this text is to establish the main correlations between territory, heritage, and development, with a focus on the territorial planning process, highlighting dysfunctions and possible advances. In addition to mentioning its correlations, we focus on the main dysfunctions, moving forward, with the presentation of new perspectives, for example, a bioregional approach and the possibility of assuming territorial heritage as a reference in planning with a view to territorial development. It results from a review of the bibliography available in virtual repositories, from Brazilian universities and national and international scientific journals. Keywords: territory; territorial heritage; territorial approach; bioregional approach; territorial development.
This article examines the public policy landscape within the context of bioeconomy, focusing on the perspectives of key government institutions in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. It aims to understand the current situation and potential challenges related to implementing these policies. The research adopts a qualitative approach, based on interviews with representatives of state government agencies. The interviewees’ perceptions were analyzed using IRaMuTeQ software, which enabled the identification of word patterns and recurring themes. The results offer a broader view of the bioeconomy in Amazonas and support the hypothesis that, according to government agency representatives, public policies for bioeconomy in the state are insufficient to support the development of this sector. Keywords: Amazonas; public policies; economy; bioeconomy; IRaMuTeQ.
Agricultural development changes the ecosystem with social, cultural, economic and environmental implications. These changes undergo constant evolution impacted by the dynamics in the development process. In view of this, the sustainability of agriculture in the municipality of Santo Antônio das Missões, RS, located in the Pampa Biome region, was researched. The first stage of the research was carried out through interviews with forty production units in the first half of 2020 and the second stage through online interviews, due to Covid 19, from September 2020 to April 2021. The study was also supported by thematic maps and secondary data. The evolution of agriculture, agroecological zoning, characterization of production systems were studied and action priorities were defined. As a result, seventeen types of production systems were characterized, thirteen family-based and four employer-based. The high numerical presence of family farming stands out, but extreme land concentration in grain production and beef cattle farming. There was a marked increase in soybean cultivation, a decrease in dairy activity and a significant reduction in beef cattle and sheep farming in the last ten years. Family livestock farmers and smallholders have difficulty reaching the level of social reproduction and growing types depend excessively on soybeans. Therefore, public authorities should prioritize family farmers in order to improve the level of social reproduction and develop strategies to reduce dependence on soy and impacts on the pampas biome. Keywords: family farming; regional development; sustainability.
