Infestations of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms and Pistia stratiotes L. compromise the ecological equilibrium and the safety of water management within the São Francisco River Basin. This study evaluated the performance of Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Classification and Regression Trees (CART) algorithms for mapping these invasive macrophytes in the sub-middle region of the basin (Jatobá, Pernambuco, Brazil). Five land cover classes were identified using Landsat 8 imagery and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) datasets processed in QGIS 3.16. RF and CART displayed identical overall accuracy rates of 94%, and all three algorithms achieved 100% accuracy in isolating Pistia stratiotes. Conversely, persistent spectral confusion between Eichhornia crassipes and soil led the RF model to misclassify 33% of soil points due to spatial resolution limitations (30 m). SVM achieved an overall accuracy of 88%, yielding a high recall rate (86%) for water hyacinth but overestimating its area. The results validate orbital remote sensing coupled with machine learning as an effective architecture for continuous bioinvasion monitoring in target zones of the Brazilian semiarid region.
Anthropogenic pressures are major drivers of environmental degradation and biodiversity loss worldwide, with forest fragmentation representing one of the most pervasive outcomes of human landuse change. Assessing the biotic integrity of forest patches is therefore essential for supporting biodiversity conservation and restoration planning in fragmented landscapes. However, comprehensive evaluations of ecosystem integrity are often costly and timeconsuming, even when rapid field-based approaches are employed. In this context, remote sensing (RS) has emerged as a complementary tool for characterizing environmental attributes that may influence forest structure and integrity. This study investigated the relationships between environmental variables derived from RS and field-based indicators of forest structure and integrity obtained through a Rapid Ecological Assessment (REA) approach, expressed as a Biotic Integrity Index (BII). Environmental predictors included the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), obtained from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) survey, altitude, distance to the patch edge, and distance to the hydrographic network. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) was applied to explore multivariate associations between environmental and biotic variables. The results revealed statistically significant but weak relationships between the two data domains, indicating limited explanatory power of the selected environmental predictors. Nonetheless, consistent and ecologically coherent patterns were identified, particularly the positive association between BII and mean NDVI and the influence of edge proximity on disturbance-related indicators. These findings highlight both the potential and the limitations of integrating REA with remotely sensed data, emphasizing the complexity of biotic–environmental interactions in fragmented tropical forests and pointing to the need for incorporating additional landscape-scale variables in future studies.
Climate change impacts the ability of food systems to provide adequate nutrition to a growing population. Understanding family farmers’ perceptions of climate change is crucial for implementing mitigation and resilience strategies. This research analyzed how family farmers in the western region of Paraná, Brazil, perceived the effects of climate change on their productive activities and how they responded and adapted. During visits to 85 rural properties, a structured questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale was administered to assess climate change impacts, response limitations, and mitigation strategies. Results were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and HCA. Farmers strongly perceived increased temperatures and reduced rainfall, which were associated with a higher incidence of agricultural pests and diseases, water scarcity, and increased production costs. The main adaptation strategies adopted included the use of organic matter for soil cover, irrigation, crop diversification, and organic fertilizers. Farmers were grouped into three clusters based on hierarchical cluster analysis using PCA indices, sociodemographic variables, and productive activities: (i) Diversification and Structural Limitations; (ii) Experience and Concerns about Productivity; and (iii) Sustainable Practices and Vulnerability to Resources. These groups presented distinct socioeconomic and productive characteristics, reflecting differences in vulnerability and adaptive capacity. Structural limitations, restricted access to financial resources, and limited technical assistance were common challenges among the groups. The findings reinforce the need for targeted public policies and technical support strategies to strengthen climate resilience in family farming systems.
The presence of pharmaceuticals in wastewater and surface water is a growing environmental concern due to their persistence and potential ecotoxicological impacts. Conventional wastewater treatment methods often fail to effectively remove these contaminants, prompting research into innovative remediation technologies. In this context, hydrogels synthesized from agricultural and industrial residues have emerged as promising materials for the selective adsorption of pharmaceuticals. This systematic review addresses recent advancements in the synthesis and modification of waste-derived hydrogels, emphasizing their physicochemical properties, adsorption mechanisms, and removal efficiencies. The analysis reveals that, despite the abundance of research on the utilization of residual biomass, targeted applications for pharmaceutical removal are still limited. In terms of performance, waste-based hydrogels demonstrate high adsorption capacities. The predominant mechanisms are electrostatic interactions, π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions. In conclusion, waste valorization significantly contributes to mitigating pharmaceutical pollution.
The study critically analyzes the budget management of the municipality of Paragominas-PA between the years of 2013 and 2023, verifying its alignment with the UN 2030 Agenda and its national adaptation, the SDG Brazil Agenda, focusing on fiscal, social, and environmental sustainability. The key issue lies in the inconsistency between the institutional discourse of sustainability and the effective execution of public resources. The objective of the research was to measure budgetary performance and identify gaps that compromise the effectiveness of municipal policies. Methodologically, a documentary and comparative analysis of secondary data from SICONFI, RREO, and the Par & aacute; Sustainable Development Index (IDSPA) was carried out, allowing for an assessment of the degree of integration between municipal actions and the SDG goals. The results indicate that, although 86.7% of the budget was executed, R$ 1.09 billion was not invested in priority areas such as health, sanitation, and environmental management. Challenges related to low institutional capacity and the fragmentation of public policies persist. It is concluded that progress toward local sustainability depends on innovation in budgetary governance and the consolidation of integrated planning and monitoring mechanisms.
Access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right, yet rural communities often face challenges related to nitrate contamination, posing risks to public health. This study assessed the presence of nitrate and health risks in 24 rural communities in the state of Goias, Brazil. A total of 158 water samples from surface and groundwater sources were analyzed to determine nitrate concentrations, Hazard Quotient (HQ), and Hazard Index (HI). Nitrate was detected in 60.1% of the samples, with concentrations ranging from non-detectable to 11.6 mg/L, with the highest levels having being observed in shallow wells. Although mean HQ and HI values remained below 1.0, maximum values exceeding this threshold were recorded in hand-dug and shallow tube wells, indicating increased health risk. Communities relying on individual water supply solutions and characterized by inadequate sanitation infrastructure exhibited the poorest indices. Rudimentary pit latrines were present in 70.8% of the communities, and 29.2% had distances shorter than 45 m between latrines and water abstraction points, increasing the potential for cross-contamination. Animal excreta in household yards were identified in 16 communities, further exacerbating water vulnerability. The poorest results were associated with the use of wells as the primary water source, with a predominance of shallow hand-dug wells in Lageado (11 of 13 samples) and shallow tube wells in Olhos d'agua. Overall, the findings indicate a higher risk of nitrate contamination in individual water supply systems, particularly in rural settlements and where pit latrines are located near abstraction points. In contrast, surface water sources and collective supply systems showed lower nitrate concentrations, below health risk thresholds, underscoring the need for continuous monitoring - especially in communities with HI>1.0 - and for the implementation of preventive and educational measures.
This study evaluated the landscape structure surrounding strictly protected conservation units (CUs) in the Cerrado biome that lack designated buffer zones, in comparison with landscapes outside these units across spatial and temporal scales. For the spatial analysis, 18 fully encompassed Cerrado CUs and 18 randomly selected external points within the biome were assessed fortheyear2022. Fortemporal analysis, 9 CUs and 9 random points were analyzed for the years 2010 and 2022. In all cases, 10-km buffers were delineated, and land use as well as land cover maps were generated. Landscape structure was quantified using percentage of class (PLAND), edge density (ED), and effective mesh size (MESH) metrics. Comparisons within groups were performed using the Mann-Whitney, Student's t, and Wilcoxon tests. In the spatial analysis, areas surrounding CUs exhibited a low proportion of Cerrado cover (median=29.8%) and did not differ significantly from external areas in PLAND or MESH. However, they presented significantly higher ED values, indicating greater fragmentation and increased exposure to edge effects around the CUs. In the temporal analysis, PLAND and MESH did not differ significantly between 2010 and 2022, whereas ED increased across all landscapes, reflecting the intensified fragmentation occurring near the CUs over time. These results demonstrate that the CUs are embedded in landscape contexts that are structurally unfavorable for conservation, and suggest that the absence of buffer zones, coupled with weakened legal instruments, may perpetuate and aggravate this situation.
Extreme weather events have been reported more frequently, with heatwaves being responsible for thousands of deaths around the world every year. The Excess Heat Factor (EHF) is an indicator developed to identify and classify heatwaves according to their severity, based on two indices, significance and acclimatization, which refer to how hot a three-day period was in relation to a historical reference and the past thirty days, respectively. Adaptable for each region, the EHF allows the separation of events into moderate, severe, and extreme. This metric was used in the present study to identify and characterize heatwaves in the megacity of São Paulo between 1936 and 2023. The historical reference was defined as 1961-1990, the official normal period defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The results showed that approximately 75% of the severe or extreme events occurred during summer, revealing that severe and extreme heatwaves are not restricted to the typical warmest season. According to the EHF metrics, the city of São Paulo experienced 84 severe heatwave events, with some lasting over 20 days. Only 4 extreme events were registered: one in 1972, one in 2020, and two in 2023. The November 2023 extreme heatwave was the strongest ever registered in São Paulo. Positive and significant (p=0.05) historical trends were found for the number of heatwave events and also for maximum severity and the duration of the events, and as a consequence for the thermal load, especially after the 1970s.
Biomass burning aerosols can spread over vast areas of South America. Recent findings indicate that the presence of these types of aerosols tend to affect cloud formation and rainfall. This research aimed to study the impacts of smoke aerosol emissions in southern Brazil, due to prolonged drought and dry events in the region. Initially, data on aerosol optical depth, precipitation, and clouds were collected to assess the influence of aerosols on the evolution of these meteorological processes. The data analysis focused on the study of the dry season in southern South America, which spans August, September, and October through the years of 2002 to 2022. Results obtained using the HYSPLIT model showed that black carbon transport during the study period originates from regions such as Paraguay, the Brazilian Midwest, and southern Amazonia. Monthly data analysis for the period of 2002 to 2022 revealed a negative Pearson correlation for August-September-October, respectively: -0.44, -0.35 and -0.37 between the aerosol optical depth (AOD) particles and precipitation; and -0.27, -0.39 and -0.22 between AOD and cloud formation. For Spearman correlations were obtained: -0.43, -0.29 and -0.21 between the aerosol optical depth (AOD) particles and precipitation; and -0.11, -0.26 and -0.23 between AOD and cloud formation. Although the results indicate a weak negative correlation, these results point to positive feedback where aerosols can negatively affect the formation of clouds and rain, causing dry periods with a greater probability of fires and smoke.
The monitoring of landfill leachate in the Brazilian semiarid region has traditionally been based on physicochemical parameters which, although essential, were insufficient to determine effluent toxicity and to predict complex biological risks. The objective of this study was to evaluate leachate toxicity through bioassays using Allium cepa (A. cepa). The methodology comprised physicochemical characterization (organic and inorganic parameters and metals) and toxicity bioassays with A. cepa using an in natura leachate sample. The phytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and mutagenicity of the effluent were assessed at different concentrations (1, 5, 10, 15, and 100%), employing control samples (positive and negative) for comparison. The results revealed an alkaline effluent with high organic loads and the presence of metals such as chromium. Biologically, the 1% concentration induced a stimulatory effect on root growth, whereas concentrations above 15% were highly phytotoxic. However, the key contribution lies in the finding that genotoxicity was observed at all concentrations, including those without apparent phytotoxic effects, and mutagenicity was detected from 10% onward. These findings establish a new analytical perspective by demonstrating that the absence of acute phytotoxicity does not ensure cellular integrity, revealing a disconnect between positive root growth and the occurrence of underlying genetic damage induced by the leachate. The climatic dynamics of the semiarid region exacerbate leachate toxicity, highlighting that the inclusion of genetic indicators in regulatory frameworks to address gaps that isolated physicochemical analyses cannot predict is urgent.
Population growth has increased consumption rates to levels that threaten the availability of natural resources, affecting all sectors- including the textile industry, which accounts for approximately 80 billion new clothing items consumed globally each year and a production volume of 100 billion garments annually, of which 33% are discarded within the first year of purchase. In Brazil, textile waste generation amounts to approximately 170 thousand tons per year, drawing significant attention to the waste produced by this industry. Thus, this study maps the literature on the stakeholders involved in the textile industry's reverse supply chain (RSC) and identifies sustainable practices that strengthen this process. The aim is to propose a framework that represents this part of the textile supply chain. The analysis identified and categorized 82 stakeholders into 24 categories, 16 of which focused on RSC, highlighting their roles, interrelationships, and impacts on RSC effectiveness. The research also identified 97 RSC additional components, mostly focused on recycling materials and manufacturing new products. The results indicate that collaboration among stakeholders is essential to boost the circular economy (CE) in the sector, although challenges such as a lack of financial incentives, inadequate regulation, and low consumer awareness still hinder the expansion of this system. The main contributions include structuring RSC, identifying stakeholders, and providing a framework based on the state of the art. The study reinforces the importance of developing public and business policies to consolidate a more sustainable textile sector.
