The Guardianship and Research Institutions play an extremely important role in the preservation of Brazilian heritage assets, especially mobile archaeological assets. In this sense, their work goes through different stages so that their purpose of preserving the assets is fulfilled: safeguarding (conservation and documentation) and extroversion (exhibitions and educational activities). This article presents the protocols developed and used to manage the archaeological assets that make up the Technical Reserve and, consequently, the Archaeological Collection of the Laboratory of Archaeology, Ethnology and Ethno-History at the State University of Maringá (LAEE/UEM). The protocols for managing the assets from the moment the institutional endorsement was issued, their entry into the LAEE, the actions taken for curation, as well as the preservation procedures and extroversion activities carried out so far, are presented.
The Campos e Saberes project proposes simulated research activities in public spaces, from an interdisciplinary perspective, based on the know-how of Archeology in dialogue with History, Anthropology, Geography, among others disciplines. Fieldwork is key in the process that includes experimenting in practice of concepts, methodologies, the notion of authorship, ethics and the public dimension of research in human and social sciences, in general. The text brings reports of activities, which are based on the concept of interdisciplinarity by Hilton Japiassú, and anti-method, by Paul Feyerabend.
The Torres do Rio Bonito rock art is part of the Palestina de Goiás Archaeological Complex, which includes a total of 48 archaeological sites, according to the IPHAN (Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional) register. These spaces are places of social practice, where rock art evokes memory and is a reference to cultural presence in the past and present. With generalized information, Western thought has created a stereotyped image of these native peoples, distorting the vision and fragmenting knowledge about the ancient history of the peoples who inhabited Brazil before the colonizers took over. In view of this, the archaeological research carried out in the Torres do Rio Bonito region in Palestina de Goiás sought to understand what information and knowledge the people who live near these sites think of archaeological remains, especially rock graphics, as part of history. The educational activities proposed for the educational institutions of Palestina de Goiás and Iporá aimed to reflect on the deep history and archaeological heritage of Goiás, dialoguing with the decolonial perspective.
The conservation of archaeological collections represents one of the greatest challenges for Brazilian archaeology, especially when dealing with materials from maritime environments. This study addresses the practical experience of handling the collection from the wreck of the transport steamer Madeira, submerged since 1893 in Guanabara Bay, Niterói-RJ, carried out in 2017 and 2018, and discusses the challenges faced in developing the corresponding work protocol. The intervention at the site was marked by the urgent need to protect remains at risk due to dredging works. Given the lack of national conservation protocols for aquatic contexts, it was necessary to adapt international methods, prioritizing an interdisciplinary approach between archaeologists and conservators. In the field, the team implemented "first aid" procedures and subsequently desalination to stabilize metal artifacts (ferrous and copper alloys), ceramics, and glass, while the Museum of Archaeology of Xingó (MAX-UFS) assumed the continuity of long-term treatment and monitoring. This experience highlighted the importance of interdisciplinarity between Archaeology and Conservation, as collaboration between these fields was essential for developing effective preservation strategies, ensuring the integrity of the materials and the protection of Brazil's underwater cultural heritage.
The academic pursuits of researchers are often shaped by their personal journeys and interests. This article explores how these factors influence research objectives, discourse settings such as the “place of speech,” and theoretical frameworks, acknowledging that scholars are historical actors shaped by their contemporary context. Specifically, the article examines two intertwined narratives: first, the experiences of a group of young researchers who, due to various circumstances of academic life, found themselves tasked with cataloging an ethnographic and archaeological collection at the Museu da Cidade de Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil; and second, the trajectory of Desidério Aytai, the primary figure responsible for assembling the collection, who, although holding a degree in engineering, worked as an ethnographer and archaeologist. Drawing on diverse sources and emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches important for humanities research, the article highlights the subjective nature of scientific inquiry, particularly in the study of Indigenous peoples and the advocacy for their historical and social rights across various spaces, including society, museums, and education. These insights emerged unexpectedly—yet organically—from what initially appeared to be an “empirical and detached” task of cataloging “forgotten” artifacts in a seemingly “uninhabited” local museum.
Among the significant advances made in recent decades by indigenous peoples in the struggle for recognition of their rights, territories and histories, access to ancient collections of their material culture, stored in museums in distant lands, has been one of the most emblematic achievements. Overcoming linguistic, cultural, financial and bureaucratic challenges, entourages of countless peoples have traveled great distances to revisit and recover materials from their history and connect, in various ways, with those who once produced them. Here we present some results of one of these efforts, by a mixed delegation made up of Waiwai and non-indigenous researchers, in two ethnographic museums in Germany (Museum für Völkerkunde/Dresden and Bonner Amerikas-Sammlung/Bonn) and one in Sweden (Världskulturmuseet). In addition to recognizing elements of Waiwai material culture and formulating reflections on the new roles these artifacts play in their distant territories, the experience allowed for the development of various discussions on museum practices, as well as curatorial, conservation and descriptive aspects. The placements and interventions carried out in these deposits, which brought physical and spiritual benefits to things and people, in turn point to paths to be taken to achieve greater indigenization of collections in ethnographic museums.
We reflect on the results of the cultural heritage survey in Barreiras, Bahia, which was conducted based on the perspectives of its citizens during the actions of a heritage education program. We argue for the adoption of appropriate methods to provoke favorable reactions to preserve the local culture, understanding the expansion of the Brazilian cultural heritage concept, grasped by an interaction process promoted by teaching-learning strategies based on heritage education that incorporates the intrinsic knowledge of the people of Barreiras. The discussion section of this study reflects on what constitutes cultural heritage, which promotes a vision of the set of cultural assets in a thematic cartography resulting from the consultation with citizens with polarized views: on the one hand, the conservative views of older generations and, on the other, the perspectives of the younger generations, open to the expansion of cultural legacies, valuing knowledge and practices previously made invisible by society.
This article examines the curation crisis in Brazilian archaeology, investigating its origins, persistence, and potential resolutions. The text identifies that the accumulation of poorly managed archaeological collections and a lack of resources and effective policies have exacerbated this crisis. The study addresses historical and structural factors that have contributed to the current scenario, such as the emphasis on new excavations to the detriment of the study and preservation of existing collections, as well as the undervaluation of Archaeological Curation as a field of scientific research. The text reinforces the importance of interdisciplinarity and collaboration among various stakeholders, such as museums, universities, and governmental bodies, to address the challenges of Archaeological Curation in Brazil. Thus, the research provides a comprehensive overview of the crisis and presents possible strategies for its mitigation.
Archaeology and Museology have been intrinsically linked since their inception as both act to preserve material culture for extracting multiple knowledge. Thus, this article highlights the importance of subjects that address Archaeology knowledge in Museology teaching given the historical relationship between the two fields and the need to qualify museologists to handle archaeological collections, which has grown exponentially in the Brazilian scenario in recent decades. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the curricula of undergraduate and stricto sensu graduate Museology programs offered by public institutions shows that Archaeology is featured in museology education and the reasons for including disciplines with general and specific Archaeology content in Museology teaching.
