Eating habits and circadian rhythms are influenced by behaviours that impact adolescent health.Food addiction (FA) is linked to weak emotional regulation and impulsivity. However, evidence on its impact on sleep remains limited. Thus, this study aims to explore whether FA predicts insomnia in adolescents and whether self-control (both functional and dysfunctional) mediates this relationship. The sample consisted of 1566 young individuals attending schools in Madeira, aged between 12 and 19 years (M =14.79,SD = 1.89), who completed an online questionnaire including sociodemographic data, the Portuguese version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale (P-YFAS), Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), and Brief Self-Control Scale (EBAC).A parallel mediation model was conducted, with gender and age as covariates. There is a significant positive direct effect of FA on insomnia (β =.068, p = <.001) and a positive indirect effect of FA on insomnia, mediated by the Dysfunctional Self-Control dimension (β = .224).The results highlight the relevance of developing interventions focused on youth impulsivity, providing strategies aimed at promoting impulse control, sleep hygiene (also addressing compulsive eating behaviour), and making pro-health decisions.
The accentuated population aging is a contemporary phenomenon with a particular incidence in Western and European countries. It is estimated that by 2050 the population aged over 65 will double and that with this increase will come important social, relational, and personal challenges for the elderly.Research in health care and safety for the elderly has grown significantly in recent decades, including studies in violence against the elderly, however violence due to negligence has been undervalued.Despite being one of the types of violence that most impacts the elderly, it is also one of the most difficult to detect and study. The purpose of the present study was to develop a narrative review of the literature that addressed violence due to negligence in the elderly and the risk factors associated with it.The search for studies was carried out in the EBSCO Host, PubMed, Scopus and Scielo databases, including 29 final articles. There were five major risk factors for violence due to negligence: Sociodemographic characteristics, degree of dependence, low social support, low sense of community and social stereotypes/ageism.Specific phenomena were also identified that can increase vulnerability to violence by neglect, such as retirement or significant physical and cognitive

The Brief Cope is validated for Portuguese adults but not for adolescents. The present study aimed to overcome this gap.A sample of 534 portuguese adolescents was collected and split in half to explore the factor structure of the instrument. To do so an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) with Principal Component Analysis was calculated in SPSS and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in Amos.Construct validity was explored with correlational analysis with relevant variables such as mental health, self-compassion and hope.Internal consistency was explored with Alpha Cronbach.Although EFA with direct oblimin rotation, forcing the 14 factors, found KMO = .80,and all communalities were above .65,it failed to retain 14 factors.CFA corroborated the original 14-factor (28 items) factor structure.Acceptable local fit (λ = >.50;R 2 > .25)and acceptable model fit (χ2/df = 1.80;TLI= .87;CFI = .91;RMSEA = .06,p = .113)were reached. The internal consistency levels ranged between α = .50(Use of Instrumental Support) and α = .79(Substance Use). This study found evidence for the validity, reliability and usefulness of Brief Cope for Portuguese adolescents, although further research must examine the psychometric properties of this instrument.
Several measures were undertaken by governments globally to prevent the dissemination of COVID-19.However, little is known about how populations perceived these measures and their implementation. Thus, this study aims to explore how adults residing in Portugal perceived the management of the COVID-19 pandemic by governmental entities.A sample of 88 adults were interviewed (n = 45; 51%; age range: 19 to 92 years).Semi-structured interviews were conducted between Jan-Sep 2022, transcribed, and analyzed according to codebook Thematic Analysis.Three main themes were identified: 1) Indispensable measures in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic;2) The government did the best it could; and 3) The dark side of the COVID-19 pandemic's management in Portugal. Our findings suggest that participants perceived the COVID-19 pandemic's management as successful, stating that the government adopted well-conceived measures, even with limited information and resources. However, adults complained about not understanding the reasoning behind some of the measures, the off-timing of some measures' implementation, and failures in governmental communication. Thus, governments should increase transparency in the decision-making process, as well as improve communication with the population, thus potentially increasing adherence to the necessary measures and feelings of safety and tranquility during a public health crisis.
Women often experience weight gain during the menopausal transition, which can be influenced by personal (e.g., estrogen decrease), environmental (e.g., socio-cultural), and/or behavioural factors (e.g., unhealthy behaviours). This weight gain can lead to obesity and is associated with health problems.Qualitative studies provide valuable insights into the weight gain experience. This study aims to explore the underlying factors contributing to weight gain during the menopausal transition.Semi-structured interviews of 31 Portuguese post-menopausal women who transitioned from normal weight in pre-menopause to overweight/obesity in (current) postmenopause. The interviews were analysed using MAXQDA software through Directed Content Analysis, followed by multiple correspondence analysis, through IBM SPSS Statistics software.A four-factor model emerged: (1) Emotional eating/Cravings, Physical inactivity, and Pandemic effects (σ2=14.21;α=0.70); (2) Health, Lack of self-care, and Stressful life events (σ2=12.29;α= 0.64), (3) Biological/Physiological factors, Binge eating, and Interpersonal influences (σ2=10.82;α=0.59), and (4) Changing habits and routines, and Work Environment (σ2=9.65;α=0.53).The four-factor model aligns with the Triadic Reciprocal Determinism Model, revealing an interaction among behavioural, personal, and environmental factors explaining weight gain during the menopausal transition.Promoting healthy lifestyles within this population is essential.Future interventions for middle-aged women should include cognitive-behavioural strategies.
Eating behaviour can exert a substantial influence on the development of obesity, a condition intricately linked with a spectrum of comorbidities (e.g., cancer, cardiovascular diseases, endocrine disorders).Obesity is more prevalent among middle-aged women, particularly during menopause, coinciding with an increase in the incidence of disordered eating behaviours. This study aims to identify the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R21) in middle-aged women.A total of 1895 middleaged Portuguese women (M=52.22years, SD=5.10) completed a sociodemographic questionnaire alongside the TFEQ-R21, comprising 21 items distributed across three dimensions (cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating).Descriptive analyses, construct and criterion validities, and reliability were performed using the R-Lavaan.The three-factor structure model presented a good fit (Comparative Fit Index=0.97;Tucker-Lewis Index=0.97;Root mean square error of approximation=0.08(p<.001);Standardized root mean square residual=0.07).The TFEQ-R21 attests to its convergent validity (average variance extracted: 0.41

The concept of Quiet Quitting (QQ) has recently gained prominence in social discussions. It is characterized by workers refusing to perform tasks beyond their contractual obligations. In the field of business management, some evidence has emerged linking QQ to two related phenomena: Quiet Firing (QF), where superiors restrict subordinates' career development opportunities, and Quiet Hiring (QH), a method for identifying employees who exceed their stated objectives. This study aim was to develop assessment instruments, drawing upon the limited existing literature, to facilitate the evaluation of QQ, QF, and QH constructs. This cross-sectional study includes a non-probabilistic sample of 118 professionally active Portuguese adults (Mage = 38.9,SD = 11.5, 61.7% women) and was conducted online. An Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was performed for all scales. The QQ scale comprises 13 items, the QH scale comprises 10 items, and EFA revealed a single factor for both, with reliability values within the recommended range (QQ = .53;QH = .50).The QF is composed of 13 items and 3 factors (Insatisfaction/Dropout, Professional Isolation, and Impediment to Professional Development). The proposed models should be tested in future studies to confirm their psychometric properties across different samples. The phenomena under examination may have impact on the wellbeing and work performance of employees.
