Subject and Purpose. The article is devoted to the radio recognition of moving waterborne objects (sea-going ships). The problem lies in the lack of radar signatures, which is especially true for coherent radar in continuous mode, implying that more signatures for the waterborne object recognition is highly needed. An additional signature can be gained just by means of a simple mathematical processing of target reflection signals. This is particularly important for radio recognition systems in current use because this will hardly complicate the system structure. Hence, it will not affect its cost either. Methods and Methodology. The method developed for the retrieval of an additional radar signature characteristic of waterborne objects moving across a rough sea surface is based on a simple mathematical processing of a signal reflected from the moving waterborne object and taken from the phase output of coherent radar. The method approbation is by the mathematical modeling of signals at the phase detector output in the event of three waterborne objects such that have identical scattering cross sections but different periods of the side and keel vibrations. Results. Based on the mathematical modeling results, it has been shown that each of the local scattering centers keeps the ratio of the linear speeds of side and keel vibrations approximately the same for the same object. But the employed ratio takes different values for different objects. Conclusion. Having a single standard coherent radar in continuous mode and guided by the developed methodology, one can gain an additional signature for the target recognition, which is a ratio of the linear speeds of side and keel vibrations of the target. The suggested methodology can be used for the radio recognition of waterborne objects moving across a rough sea surface.
Subject and Purpose. This theoretical and experimental research is devoted to peculiarities of the ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) pulse radiation from active bow-tie dipoles. The focus is on the relationship between the amplitude-time dependences of electromagnetic fields produced by active UWB pulsed antennas and the configuration of the conductive components for temporally short (less than 0.5 ns), ultra-wide-bandwidth pulse radiation. Methods and Methodology. Analysis of the radiator geometry action on the emitted pulse parameters is performed by numerical simulation with the use of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The experiment involves specially made, variously shaped bow-tie radiators tested with different resistive loadings in radiation mode. The numerically simulated characteristic curves of the radiated field amplitude shape versus radiator geometry are confirmed by experiment. Radiation field parameters versus load resistance are experimentally studied, too. Results. Conditions for the effective pulse radiation with a largest-possible pulse amplitude have been determined, the post-pulse oscillation amplitude and duration reduced to a minimum. Conclusion. It has been shown that the resistive loading in the excitation area significantly reduces amplitudes and durations of post-pulse oscillations in signals radiated by active dipole antennas.
Subject and Purpose. The article is concerned with the spectral-luminescent and lasing characteristics of the radiation from solid-state active media based on polyurethane activated by a binary mixture of dyes. The purpose of these studies is to demonstrate a possibility of the spectral range expansion of the emission from solid-state dye lasers with polyurethane active elements. Methods and Methodology. Specially prepared samples of polyurethane active media having the same donor (Rhodamine 6G) concentration but various acceptor (Sulforhodamine 101) concentrations are experimentally studied for their spectral-luminescent and lasing characteristics. Results. The main spectroscopic characteristics of Rhodamine 6G and Sulforhodamine 101 in polyurethane have been measured, the nonradiative energy transfer parameters in this molecular pair estimated. It has been demonstrated that the matrix emission spectrum can be purposefully transformed by selection of relative concentrations of dyes in the mixture. In a broadband resonator, either a single- or two-band emission with different positions and various intensities of spectral bands is observed depending on the acceptor concentration. In a dispersive resonator under the same conditions, the tuning range of the lasing spectrum expands and extends to the longer wavelengths. Conclusion. The prospects of using donor-acceptor dye mixtures for improving spectral characteristics of polyurethane active elements in solid-state dye lasers have been confirmed. It has been shown that signatures of the emission characteristics of these media are governed by the mechanism of the excitation energy transfer between dye molecules. Lasing has been obtained on polyurethane matrices with the emission wavelength tuning throughout the “green-red” region of the spectrum.
Subject and Purpose. The paper investigates tropospherically caused fluctuations of signals from the GPS navigation system while the satellite is beyond the radio horizon. The intensity of GPS signal fluctuations under the influence of meteorological factors is studied, too. The purpose of the work is to determine relationship between the intensity of GPS signal fluctuations and the meteorological conditions when satellite elevation angles are small. Methods and Methodology. The methodology of the work is based on the search for the intensity of amplitude fluctuations of GPS satellite’s signals depending on the meteorological situation. The measurement approach is registration of the GPS satellite’s signal level just before the satellite crosses the horizon. The data processing after a series of experimental studies is based on the extraction of tropospheric fluctuations from the complete GPS signal by the moving average method. Results. Experimental studies of the turbulent component of signals from GPS satellites at low elevation angles have been carried out. It has been revealed that a conventional elevation boundary below which the tropospheric influence is predominant can be established due to the synchronism property which the orbits of the GPS satellites hold. It has been shown that variations in the mean square deviation (MSD) of GPS signal fluctuations caused by the troposphere and extracted from the complete signal are consistent with meteorological parameter changes. Conclusion. Analysis has been carried out to show that a meteorological dependence of the MSD statistics of GPS signal tropospheric fluctuations exists. The intensity of fluctuations rises with the convective activity in the troposphere. The conducted experiments suggest that periods of increased turbulence in the atmosphere can be detected with the use of GPS signals. For this purpose, the optical methods will not do.
Subject and Purpose. The problem of output beam matching with the waveguide transmission line often arises when using terahertz lasers. The special quasi-optical devices that are used to combat the problem lead to radiation losses and additional material costs. The aim of this work is to develop appropriate output mirrors for THz lasers so as to make the output laser beam match the transmission line of a given diameter. Methods and Methodology. As part of the experimental research into the action of the output mirror configuration on the parameters of THz laser radiation, gradient metal-film mirrors are made like a transparent substrate with a thin metal layer on it. The layer thickness varies over the substrate surface, forming therewith a transparency spot with a given change in the transmittance in the middle of the mirror. The properties of the gradient metal-film output mirrors are examined as applied to a gas-discharge HCN laser at a wavelength of 337 μm. Results. The gradient metal-film mirrors enable obtaining laser beams of a diameter equal to the inner diameter of the relevant transmission line and with a proper transverse energy distribution. The efficiency of the transmission of laser radiation energy into the waveguide line increases, and so does the performance of the laser installation. Another positive point is that the enhanced transparency in the middle of the mirror raises efficiency of the active substance energy utilization and conveys focusing properties to the flat mirror, which reduces diffraction losses. Conclusions. The employment of gradient metal-film output mirrors makes it possible to raise efficiency of laser installations. The features of metal-film mirrors suggest broad potentials for their application and make reasonable their further research.
Subject and Purpose. The elucidation of the molecular mechanisms of action of biomolecules is necessary for the development of state-of-the-art means of diagnosing and treatment. Dielectric studies in the millimeter wave range are effective for puzzling out the nature of the interaction of biomolecules with a surrounding aqueous solvent. Flavin mononucleotide (FMN), which can kill microorganisms and destroy cancer cells, is of particular interest. The aim of the work is to recognize hydration effects (changes in the state of water molecules) in FMN solutions. Methods and Methodology. The complex dielectric permittivity (CDP) is measured in the EHF range. Knowing the difference between the CDP of FMN solution and the CDP of water we find the difference, D es , between the effective dielectric permittivities in terms of the Debye theory of polar liquids. Since the relaxation time of dipoles of bound water is one or two orders of magnitude longer than that of free water, the amount of the difference D es characterizes the hydration of biomolecules. At low concentrations, this difference is proportional to the number of bound water molecules. Results. It has been shown that approximately18 water molecules are bound to the FMN molecule. Groups of atoms as the most probable hydration centers (primarily due to the hydrogen bonds) have been indicated. As the pH decreases, the number of water molecules bound to the Flavin mononucleotide increases to 21. The study of the FMN–DNA solution has shown that one nucleotide accounts for 25–26 bound water molecules in total. However, composing hydration numbers assumes a quantity of components less than 20. An assumption is made that the additional components are due to the cooperative nature of the hydration, leading to the fact that even if some solvent molecules do not come into a direct contact with hydration centers, they are under the influence of biomolecules all the same. Conclusion. Extremely-high-frequency dielectrometry is an effective method of research into the interaction of biomolecules with a water-ionic solvent. A FMN hydration model has been proposed, which indicates probable hydration centers and tells a measure of their effect on the solvent. It has been found that the FMN with DNA interaction increases the number of bound water molecules per one nucleotide of the DNA. The obtained results have been compared to the existing models of the DNA with FMN interaction.
Subject and Purpose. The Matrix Pencil method is investigated as a means of increasing the accuracy of measuring the angles of low-altitude targets above sea level. The aim of the study was to evaluate its effectiveness in the conditions of interference created by multi-beam propagation, represented by mirror and diffuse reflection of radio waves from the sea surface, and thermal noise of radar receiving channels, and to justify measures to achieve high efficiency in different combinations. and obstacle levels. Methods and Methodology. The study was conducted by computer simulation. It covered the sea waves, which met the conditions of both specular and strong diffuse reflection, as well as different levels of thermal noise in the receiving channels of the radar. Typical conditions were used in the simulation: the length of the route – 2000 m, the height of the center of the receiving antenna at sea level – 12 m, the width of the antenna beam – 1°, the angular height of the target – 0.3°. The effectiveness of the method was determined by comparing it with the previously studied method of root-MUSIC under identical conditions. Results. The data on the errors of measuring the place angle when using different a priori parameters of the Matrix Pencil method are obtained. Recommendations for the choice of these parameters have been developed to minimize errors in measuring the angles of the place. The advantages and disadvantages of the Matrix Pencil method in comparison with the root-MUSIC method are noted. Conclusion. The obtained results can be used in the development of radars designed to support low-altitude objects above sea level.
Subject and Purpose. The paper addresses interaction processes going in the ocean–atmosphere system and is concerned with their research by the method of radar remote sensing. Specifically, the matter of concern is the detection and parameter estimation of long waves, including nonlinear ones, on the ocean surface. Methods and Methodology. In August 1988, a series of successive radar surveys of long surface wave manifestations on the Pacific Ocean surface was carried out in the 3 cm wave range by means of an airborne X-band radar system “Analog”. The analysis of the results includes estimation of both spatial and frequency features of the detected long-wave packets and, also, a comparison of the measurement results with model calculations performed in the framework of theory of radio wave scattering by the sea surface in the presence of seismic wave effects. Results. Radar images of wave packets of long surface waves in the open ocean have been obtained. From the imaging data, the spatial scale (5…10 km) of these waves, the lengths (1…5 km) of wave packet components and the wave packet velocity (6.1 m/s) have been derived. Analysis has been given to the nonlinear form of wave packet components, and their amplitudes have been estimated by comparing the experimental and theoretically obtained radio contrasts. The bathymetry of the surface-wave track has been performed to suggest that the observed wave packet represents a set of solitons generated by a seismic impact with the further underwater collapse. Conclusions. A possibility has been demonstrated for monitoring wave packets of long surface waves in their propagation dynamics. The experiments of the sort for gaining a deeper insight into the ocean–atmosphere interaction physics can be conducted by means of not only airborne but also spaceborne radar systems with allowance made for the rate of surveys in both time and space.
Subject and Purpose. This study focuses on the original waveguide-differential dielectrometer designed for complex permittivity measurements of high-loss liquids in the microwave range towards the determination of pharmaceutical ingredient concentrations in water solutions at room temperature. The suitability of the device and effectiveness of the dielectrometry method are tested on such pharmaceutical ingredients as lincomycin and levofloxacin over a wide range of concentrations. Methods and Methodology. The main idea of the method consists in that the complex propagation coefficients of the HE11 wave are obtained from the amplitude and phase shift differences acquired by the wave after it has passed through the two measuring cells of the waveguide-differential dielectrometer. Results. We have shown that the proposed dielectometry method allows a real-time determination of pharmaceutical ingredient concentrations in water solution by measuring the wave attenuation and phase shift differences. We have found that unless concentrations of pharmaceutical ingredients are low, few free water molecules in water solution are bound to the pharmaceutical ingredients. The number of free water molecules in solution decreases as the concentration of pharmaceutical ingredients rises. Conclusion. The current study confirms that the dielectometry method and the device developed provide effective determination of pharmaceutical ingredient concentrations in water solutions.
Subject and Purpose. Two impedance resonant monopoles of electric length 0.2 £ l / l £ 0.3 are mounted on a rectangular screen perpendicularly to the screen surface and studied for the directional radiation properties (directive gain and radiation patterns) depending on the monopole separation and the side length and aspect ratio of the screen. Methods and Methodology. A three-dimensional diffraction vector problem of two impedance monopoles mounted on a perfectly conducting rectangular screen is solved in terms of the uniform geometric theory of diffraction. Allowances are made for the diffracted field asymptotics of the secondary diffraction at the screen edges and for the electric current distribution asymptotics of a thin impedance dipole in the free space. Results. For a lattice of two impedance monopoles mounted on a rectangular screen, 3-D programs have been developed for calculating its radiation patterns, directive gain Dmax at a radiation maximum, and radiation resistance in view of the secondary diffraction at the screen edges. The radiation pattern shaping for the diffraction and total fields and the directive gain Dmax have been analyzed depending on the monopole separation x / l 0.1...1, the screen side length x / l 1.2…4, and the screen aspect ratio W / L 0.5…3. It has been shown that the so obtained optimum separation x opt 0.65, optimum length Lopt and optimum ratio (W / L) opt make Dopt three times greater than the lowest Dmax value. Conclusions. The three-dimensional vector problem of field diffraction of two impedance monopoles mounted on an ideally conducting rectangular screen has been solved. It is of interest that given an optimum monopole separation xopt and an optimum side length Lopt of the square screen, a lattice of two monopoles offers a greater radiation resistance and a two times larger Dopt than a single monopole on the same screen does. The developed computational programs and the obtained numerical results enable efficient actual wireless communication systems to be modelled for both ideally conducting and impedance resonant monopoles.
Subject and Purpose. The use of spatially structured ferromagnets is promising for designing materials with unique predetermined electromagnetic properties welcome to the development of magnetically controlled microwave and optical devices. The paper addresses the electromagnetic properties of structured ferrite samples of a different shape (spatial geometry) and is devoted to their research by the method of electron spin resonance (ESR). Methods and methodology. The research into magnetic properties of structured ferrite samples was performed by the ESR method. The measurements of transmission coefficient spectra were carried out inside a rectangular waveguide with an external magnetic field applied. Results. We have experimentally shown that over a range of external magnetic field strengths, the frequency of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of grooved ferrite samples (groove type spatial geometry) increases with the groove depth. The FMR frequency depends also on the groove orientation relative to the long side of the sample. We have shown that as the external static magnetic field approaches the saturation field of the ferrite, the FMR frequency dependence on the external static magnetic field demonstrates "jump-like" behavior. And as the magnetic field exceeds the ferrite saturation field, the FMR frequency dependence on the groove depth gets a monotonic character and rises with the further growth of the field strength. Conclusion. We have shown that the use of structured ferrites as microwave electronics components becomes reasonable at magnetic field strengths exceeding the saturation field of the ferrite. At these fields, such a ferrite offers a monotonically increasing dependence of the resonant frequency on the external magnetic field and on the depth of grooves on the ferrite surface. Structured ferrites are promising in the microwave range as components of controlled filters, polarizers, anisotropic ferrite resonators since they can provide predetermined effective permeability and anisotropy
Subject and Purpose. Smoke, fog, avalanches, debris of collapsed structures and other optically opaque obstacles in both natural and man-made disasters make optical sensors useless for detecting victims. Electromagnetic waves of the decimeter range penetrate well almost all obstacles, reflect from the trapped people and return to the radar receiver. Due to the breathing and heartbeat, the human-reflected sounding signals get the Doppler phase modulation, which is an information signal. These information signals and their properties provide the subject matter for the present research with the aim to create optimal methods and algorithms of random event processing for the prompt location of survivors by rescuers. Method and Methodology. The method of stochastic analysis of the fluctuation Doppler spectra of reflected sounding signals shows that the information signals have properties of conditional Markov processes. Results. The problem of optimal nonlinear filtering of conditional Markov processes entering the radar signal processing unit has been examined closely. An optimal adaptive filter has been proposed to reduce the masking effect of interferences caused by non-stationary noises and sounding signal reflections from stationary objects. The optimality criterion is the minimum mean square error function whose current value is evaluated in real time during the filtering process as the statistics is accumulated. The filter coefficients are calculated by the recurrent, steepest descent algorithm. The real-time work is carried out through the use of fast Fourier transform algorithms. Conclusion. The structure of the optimal adaptive filter to be built into the radar signal processing unit has been developed. Real radar signals have shown that the optimal filtering during the signal processing in systems designed for detecting live people by their breathing and heartbeat facilitates the interpretation of the observed signals. Some spectra of real signals generated by human breathing and heartbeat are presented.
Subject and Purpose. The amount of precipitation is important information for the agro-climatic justification of agro-technical and reclamation actions directly controlling crop yields. The inverse problem of rain intensity retrieval from the remote sensing data is an incorrect mathematical physical problem described by a nonlinear integral equation. The purpose of this work is to analyze how errors in the specific effective scattering surface evaluation affect the results of double-frequency retrieval of the rain intensity obtained through the inverse problem solution by the previously proposed method. Methods and Methodology. Numerical simulation by using an approach based on regularization techniques and intended for the integral scattering equation solution is carried out for double-frequency sensing in the microwave range Results. Numerical simulations of the rain intensity retrieval have been performed at the operating wavelengths 0.82 and 3.2 cm in the range 1…30 mm/h and for different values of received power errors. It has been shown that an error in the specific effective scattering surface evaluation has a greater effect on the reliability of the intensity retrieval in the shorter wavelength case. And it exerts practically no effect (not exceeding 5 %) at the longer wavelength and at the rain intensity below 15 mm/h, which, however, is true for heavier rains, too. Conclusion. The analysis of the results has shown that the error of the rain intensity retrieval remains within acceptable limits (below 20 %) provided that the error in the specific effective scattering surface evaluation does not exceed 15 % at the shorter wavelength. At the longer wavelength, it can reach 30 %.
Subject and Purpose. Statistical data on how the satellite signal level varies with changes in the characteristics of tropospheric layers and lower-troposphere hydrometeors serve designers a useful guide in the development of systems for diagnosing weather conditions and hydrometeor characteristics. The aim of the work is to generalize results from the long-term research into daily dependences of X-band radio signal attenuation between the geostationary satellite and Earth terminals. On this basis it is possible to find relationship between signal level changes at the point of reception and geophysical atmospheric agents. Methods and methodology. A receiving measuring and recording complex developed by the authors is employed for the purpose of establishing relationship between geostationary satellite signal level at the receiving point and geophysical atmospheric agents. Results. A block-diagram of the receiving measuring and recording complex is presented, its operation described. Geometric parameters of the radio signal path of propagation have been considered. Signal level measuring results obtained using a Hot Bird geostationary satellite in the period from 03 to 17 January 2019 have been generalized and interpreted. Conclusions. X-band radio signal attenuation on the path from a geostationary satellite to the Earth has a daily dependence. The radio signal level variations are not connected with alterations in spatial and technical parameters of the geostationary satellite or receiving equipment. The day and night changes in radio signal level are attributed to different daytime durations and different angles of sunbeam (including twilight) incidence on tropospheric areas associated with the receiving antenna pattern in the propagation direction, which entails changeable temperature regime and moisture content in these areas. Geophysical agents in the highest tropospheric layers insolated from far beyond the horizon can also be interpreted for long-distance tropospheric radio wave propagation in these tropospheric regions.
Subject and Purpose. The present paper is concerned with the use of wave technologies in the development of antibiotics-alternative approaches for pathogenic microflora suppression. Lactobacilli strains picked in different ecological niches and their activity against pathogenic strains are studied with a focus on a targeted modification of adhesive and antagonistic properties of lactobacilli by exposing them to low-intensity electromagnetic (EM) fields and the ultrasound. Methods and Methodology. Lactobacilli picked in different ecological niches are experimentally studied, including (1) standard strains from probiotic preparations and (2) circulating strains picked in humans and bees. For the ultrasonic and electromagnetic radiation sources, G3-109 and G3-F and G4-141 and G4-142 generators are taken, respectively. The adhesive properties of Lactobacillus spp. strains and their antagonistic activity are estimated against C. diphtheriae, S. aureus and yeast-like fungi of Candida genus in aerobic and microaerophilic culture conditions. Statistical technology is employed in the data processing and analysis. Results. It has been established that L. plantarum strains picked in the gut of healthy bees are most antagonistic towards pathogens. It has been demonstrated that the priority culture conditions for lactobacilli are microaerophilic conditions simulating their stay in vivo. It has been shown that it is possible to modify properties of microorganisms by their exposure to ultrasound and low-intensity electromagnetic fields in narrow bands of the EHF range. The effect efficiency versus frequency has a dispersion character. Individual features of various pathogenic strains have been recognized. Conclusion. The obtained results open up prospects for electromagnetic and acoustic technologies in the development of safe alternative means to antagonize persisting pathogens and increase human body resilience.
Subject and Purpose. Eigenwave studies of various bounded structures make a prolific line of investigation in both modern radiophysics and solid-state and functional electronics. Conducting solids demonstrating plasma (semiconductor) properties attract particular attention. Owing to the high conductivity of semiconductors (as it is inversely proportional to the charge carrier effective mass that is smaller than the free electron mass), interest exists in propagation features of slow elliptical-polarization electromagnetic waves – helicons – in magnetized semiconductor waveguides. The present work aims to determine eigenwave spectra of a solid-state plasma cylinder in a strong constant concentric magnetic field. Methods and Methodology. The eigenwave theoretical study of a magnetoplasma cylinder in the free space is conducted in terms of Maxwell's equations. The motion equation of conduction electrons of a solid-state plasma is adopted with quasi-stationarity electromagnetic field conditions satisfied. The collision frequency of majority charge carriers is assumed substantially less than their cyclotron frequency. Results. The dispersion equation of a cylindrical solid-state plasma (semiconductor) waveguide has been obtained. It has been shown that a collisionless magnetoplasma waveguide supports propagation of bulk and surface helicons. The propagation is accompanied by the surface current flowing lengthways cylinder components. Charged particle collisions destroy the surface current and initiate additional (to helicons) H-type hybrid waves such that their phase velocities coincide with phase velocities of the helicons. It has been found that the nonreciprocity effect holds for the waveguide eigenwaves having identical field distribution structures but different azimuthal propagation directions, and it also does as soon as the external magnetic field changes its sense. Conclusion. The research results have deepened our understanding of physical properties of bounded structures with plasma-like filling media. More systematization has been added to the knowledge of eigenwave behavior of these structures in a quasi-stationarity electromagnetic field.
Subject and Purpose. Special features of all-dielectric electromagnetic analogues of topological insulators (TI) in the microwave range are considered, aiming at studying the influence of geometrical and constitutive parameters of TI elements on the dispersion properties of topological insulators based on a two-dimensional double-periodic array of dielectric elements. Methods and Methodology. The evaluation of dispersion properties and electromagnetic field spatial distribution patterns for topological insulators is performed using numerical simulation programs. Results. The electromagnetic analogue of a topological insulator based on a double-periodic array of elliptical quartz cylinders has been considered. By numerical simulation, it has been demonstrated that the electromagnetic properties of the structure are controllable by changing the quartz uniaxial anisotropy direction without any changes in other parameters. A combined topological insulator made up of two adjoining ones differing in shapes of their unit cells has been considered with the numerical demonstration that frequencies of surface states are controllable by choosing the quartz uniaxial anisotropy direction. It has been shown that it is at the interface of two different in shape unit cells that the electromagnetic field concentration at a surface state frequency takes place. Conclusion. A possibility has been demonstrated of controlling microwave electromagnetic properties of topological insulators by changing their geometric parameters and permittivity of the constituents. From a practical point of view, topological insulators can be used as components of microwave transmission lines and devices featuring very small propagation loss.
Subject and Purpose. The mechanism of destruction of the S-state of a nonlinear high-temperature superconductor as part of a coplanar waveguide has not been properly elucidated as the effect of avalanche-type transition to a highly dissipative state, which was experimentally detected by the authors, takes place. The present work is concerned with the development of an appropriate approach describing kinetics of destruction of the S-state of a nonlinear high-temperature superconductor in a coplanar waveguide with allowances made for an inhomogeneous distribution of the microwave current in the superconducting film strip. Methods and Methodology. Use of I.B. and O.G. Vendiks’ reasoning [2] is made on kinetics of the destruction of the superconducting state of a wide film when a direct current governed by the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation is applied. Keeping unchanged their idea as to the S–N boundary forming in the film strip with the boundary movement to the middle of the strip, the S–N boundary motion equation is obtained for a coplanar waveguide, proceeding in doing this from the motion equation of magnetic flux vortices under certain restrictions specified. Results. The time of S-state destruction has been numerically estimated: 1) for a wide superconducting film of YBa2Cu3O7–d composition, the destruction is by the direct current and 2) for a coplanar waveguide based on the same film, the destruction is by the microwave current. When the superconductivity is small (I / I c ³ 1), the destruction time values in both cases are close to each other within the order of magnitude. Conclusion. It is for the first time that the S-state destruction time in a coplanar waveguide has been expressed in terms of the microwave current distribution in the waveguide. It has been shown that this characteristic linearly depends on the ratio between the critical current and the microwave current amplitude in contrast to a quadratic dependence obtained for a superconducting strip with a direct current.
Subject and Purpose. Precipitation is the main source of agricultural land moisture. The knowledge of its amount, especially during the growing season, is important information to justify necessary agronomic and land reclamation measures. The purpose of this work is to solve by regularization the inverse problem of double-frequency sensing of precipitation in the microwave range with the signal attenuation considered and analyze the influence of radar cross-section (RCS) calculation errors and the total signal attenuation measuring precision on the rain intensity retrieval results. Methods and Methodology. Numerical simulation is used in double frequency retrievals to solve the integral scattering equation by regularization methods. Results. Numerical simulation has been performed for the rain intensity retrieval with a uniform spatial profile of rain intensity in the range 1…20 mm/h. Direct and inverse iterative procedures were used for having the signal attenuation at 0.82 and 3.2 cm operating wavelengths. It has been shown that the direct iterative procedure is less effective than the inverse one. Thus, when the rain intensity exceeds 20 mm/h or when it is within 10…20 mm/h and a rain spatial extent goes over 500 m, the direct iteration scheme causes significant errors in the rain intensity retrieval. Conclusion. The analysis of the results has shown that the use of the inverse iterative procedure makes it possible to retrieve a uniform-profile rain intensity with a 25 % error for rains with a 20 mm/h intensity and a 4 km spatial extent and ± 20 % errors in the total signal attenuation and specific RCS calculated.
Subject and Purpose. The maintenance of physical and chemical properties and biological stability of lubricoolants during downtimes, which are bound to happen sometimes and last long, is a hot problem in metalworking industry. The procedure of bubbling for the lubricoolant mixing, saturation with oxygen and inactivation of anaerobic microflora calls for chemical and biological techniques to monitor the lubricoolant condition during the bubbling and after it. Yet the standard methods lack responsiveness and accuracy of the analysis, implying the further refinement of the output values. In the present work, microwave super-high frequency (SHF) dielectrometry is employed for the examination of the dielectric constant and dynamic surface tension of synthetic, semi-synthetic and organic emulsions during the bubbling. Methods and Methodology. The dielectric constant and dynamic surface tension of 5.7 % water-soluble emulsions are measured at frequency f = 37.7 GHz. A frequency sweep in the acoustic frequency range f = 20…25000 Hz is used, for which purpose the end of the 8-mm waveguide is supplied with a piezo сell. Results. It has been revealed that the dielectric constant and dynamic surface tension of lubricoolants depend on the physicochemical characteristics that the lubricoolants acquire during a month-long downtime and after 10-, 20-, and 30-minute bubblings. The dielectric constant and dynamic surface tension demonstrate that the bubbling improves lubricating properties of all the emulsions examined. For this, a 10-minute bubbling is enough for semi-synthetic lubricoolants, and a 20-minute bubbling is needed for synthetic and organic lubricoolants. Conclusion. The microwave dielectrometry method with a frequency sweep in the acoustic frequency range can be used in metalworking industry as an aid to lubricoolant quality control during the downtime or storage.
