
Background: The business value (BV) of big data analytics (BDA) is well established, yet many studies rely on qualitative methods or subjective assessments. Following a post-adoption perspective, this study addresses the lack of objective, data-driven research by examining how firm size and industry concentration moderate the relationship between BDA adoption and financial performance. This research aims to foster a more in-depth exploration of contextual moderators. Method: Employing the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework as a theoretical lens, this study conducts a thorough 11-year investigation (2010-2020) through a text-mining approach based on objective measures from annual reports from 81 German firms listed on the stock market. Results: The findings of this empirical approach indicate that firm size positively moderates the relationship between BDA adoption and financial performance, whereas the moderating effect of industry concentration is not statistically significant. Conclusion: This study contributes to the understanding of contextual influences on the BV of BDA adoption. It underscores the relevance of organizational and environmental conditions in shaping performance outcomes and suggests that internal firm characteristics may be more critical than structural industry factors. Future research should explore additional moderators, such as data quality, industry information intensity, or data-driven culture, to further clarify the complex mechanisms linking BDA adoption and firm performance.
Background: Enabled by advances in digital technology, the adoption of non-ownership business models (NOBMs) has become a major business trend, particularly in the mechanical engineering industry. In an NOBM, machine builders retain ownership and only offer the use and/or performance of a machine as a service to their clients. While the literature discusses several individual factors that influence the decision to adopt an NOBM, little is known about their interplay and the impact thereof on the NOBM design. Method: Drawing on 21 interview-based cases and applying fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), our study aims to identify configurations of five key antecedent conditions (market competition, market demand, machine standardization, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) capabilities, and a high share of large clients) that lead to machine builders offering or not offering NOBMs. Furthermore, based on the interview insights, we aim to link the NOBM offering configurations to the resulting NOBM design. Results: Our fsQCA reveals two distinct configurations that lead to an NOBM offering and two resulting in a non-offering. Drawing on case interview insights, we explain the rationale behind these four identified configurations. Moreover, we relate the two identified NOBM offering configurations to two fundamental NOBM design types: light NOBMs and full-fledged NOBMs. Conclusion: Our results provide new and actionable insights into how multiple antecedent conditions, together with their respective benefits and risks for machine builders, lead to the offering (or non-offering) of NOBMs, which depends on whether an appropriate balance between these factors is achieved. Moreover, rather than focusing on individual antecedent conditions, we shift the focus from individual antecedent conditions to how their configurations shape the subsequent design of NOBMs. Machine builders can compare our configurations to their own situation and determine whether offering an NOBM is advisable and, if so, how it should be designed.
Background: Organizations require information systems (IS) that can effectively sense and respond to changes in the contemporary, uncertain, and dynamic business environment. Agile information systems development (ISD) practices offer a robust approach for managing uncertainty by promoting sensing and responding capabilities that organizations need to be competitive. This study addresses the research question of how team competence and team collaboration impact ISD sensing and responding capabilities, and how these capabilities, in turn, affect project outcomes, using the sense-and-respond model as a theoretical basis. Method: We used a quantitative approach to test the research model. The data were collected using an online survey, and 160 survey responses were collected from agile ISD teams. We used partial least squares (PLS) with a bootstrapping technique to analyze the survey data. Results: The results show that team competence and team collaboration significantly relate to the sensing and responding capabilities of agile ISD teams. Responding capabilities significantly impact project satisfaction. Responding capabilities also fully mediate the impacts of team competence and team collaboration on project satisfaction. Conclusion: This study contributes to the agile literature by quantitatively examining the relationships between team competence, team collaboration, sensing and responding capabilities, and project outcome. The study also helps in understanding the mediation mechanism of the ISD team's dynamic sensing and responding capabilities. It also provides insights for agile professionals to understand the roles of team competence and team collaboration in developing sensing and responding capabilities.
Background: System quality, which represents the inherent capabilities of information systems, has been theorized as a significant predictor of system use. It has received considerable research attention, but the empirical results on the effect of system quality on system use has been inconsistent over time. This study seeks to examine if system quality matters for system use. Method: Using data gathered from 82 studies published between 2003 and 2024, this study involves a meta-regression to identify factors that may influence the variation in the results of the relationship between system quality and system use along with an extended analysis of the mediating effects of system quality on system use. Result: After controlling for sample size and the number of other direct effects on system quality, results show that students more frequently reported a positive effect of system quality on system use relative to non-students such as customers or workers while there were no significant differences in the effect of system quality on system use due to the type of information system or geographic region. An extended analysis shows that the relationship between system quality and system use is mediated by other variables such as user satisfaction and perceived usefulness. Conclusion: This study shows that system quality matters for system use in multiple ways. It has both direct effects and indirect effects through other factors on system use. These findings have implications for the design of high-quality information systems and the ways in which the design can also impact user evaluations of information systems leading to system use.
Background: To ensure effective IS security, fostering compliance behaviors among civil servants is essential. Sanctions and training are widely recommended managerial strategies to enhance IS security policy compliance. However, research on their effectiveness has yielded mixed results, with some studies even questioning their impact. Additionally, while cybersecurity is increasingly vital for public organizations, most research on IS security compliance has focused on the private sector, where organizational cultures differ significantly from those of public institutions, potentially affecting compliance behaviors. This study aims to empirically analyze the influence of sanctions and training on public employees' perceptions of IS security policy compliance in the context of public institutions in a developing country. Method: To address response bias, we conducted a vignette experiment with a unique set of 1,321 civil servants in Kyrgyzstan. We applied the Deterrence Theory and the Theory of Planned Behavior to discuss the effects of sanctions and training on IS security policy compliance among civil servants. Results: Findings revealed that civil servants perceive that both the use of sanctions and training positively affect their intentions to comply with IS security policies, confirming the effectiveness of these approaches. In addition, our analysis examined the possible heterogeneity across the respondents' demographic characteristics. Female respondents along with individuals belonging to the younger generation, with less work experience, a high-ranked position, high confidence in computer skills, and high public service motivation, perceived civil servants as sensitive to imposed sanctions. Conclusion: First, public leaders should prioritize IS security by budgeting specifically for comprehensive training, ensuring public employees understand security policies, risks, and 26 compliance procedures. Second, public organizations should establish certain and severe sanctions, ensuring that these penalties are consistently enforced when security policies are breached. Third, it is advisable to periodically review and update sanction policies to ensure their effectiveness and relevance.
Background: Trust in cryptocurrencies is a complex and evolving construct that is influenced by technological, economic, and social factors. Unlike traditional information systems that rely on institutional trust, cryptocurrency users often depend on underlying technology and community insights. Despite growing interest, existing research has primarily focused on narrow aspects of trust, with limited cross-national perspectives and comprehensive models. Method: This study investigates how geographic differences impact user trust in cryptocurrencies by surveying 644 respondents from China, Germany, and the USA. This research draws on established trust formation theories and utilizes a comprehensive model encompassing technological, economic, and social factors. Results: Our analysis revealed multiple country-specific pathways to trust, highlighting that no single factor is universally sufficient. Technological robustness and perceived economic benefits emerge as key enablers across contexts, while tolerance for financial risk tempers the negative impact of economic losses. Cultural dimensions, such as individualism and long-term orientation, shape trust formation and differ across countries. Conclusion: This study contributes theoretically by demonstrating that trust in cryptocurrencies is not monolithic but emerges from equifinal configurations of socio-technical conditions that vary by national context. Practically, the findings equip IT, finance, and accounting professionals with nuanced insights to tailor trust-building strategies in line with local user expectations. This enables a more effective design, communication, and regulation of crypto-enabled services across diverse markets.
Background: AI recruiting, defined as procedures leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to assist organizations in selecting job applicants, presents promising opportunities for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. Although AI recruiting garners growing attention from the industry, research on AI recruiting and workplace DEI remains fragmented and dispersed across disciplines. Additionally, concerns about algorithmic biases complicate the understanding of the topic. Thus, the current study aims to comprehend the existing knowledge on the implications of AI recruiting for workplace DEI. Method: Using the two-stage concept-centric search approach, we identified 35 relevant articles that were published between 2018 and 2024. Articles were analyzed based on five guiding questions. We further deployed the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) framework to consolidate the key variables in the existing literature. Based on the integrative framework, we presented a research agenda to guide future research. Results: Our literature analysis revealed that research on AI recruiting and workplace DEI spans multiple disciplines, falls short in theoretical frameworks, predominantly relies on scenario-based experiments, and mainly focuses on the US context. We identified four research streams - applicants, decision-makers, mixed perspectives, and algorithms - with the streams on applicants and algorithms drawing the most attention. By analyzing the research foci, key findings, and DEI implications of studies within each stream, we found that (1) AI recruiting's implications for DEI were most often examined from the aspect of equity, followed by diversity, and inclusion, and (2) evidence regarding whether these implications are positive remains inconsistent. Conclusion: This study offers an overview of AI recruiting and workplace DEI research. Overall, our analyses indicate mixed findings on AI recruiting's positive implications for workplace DEI. We hope to guide and inspire future investigations, ultimately leading to a more comprehensive understanding of AI recruiting and workplace DEI. Specific insights were provided for Asia-Pacific practitioners.
Background: The crucial role of information disclosure in the establishment of social relationships on social networking sites has been predominantly examined from a cognitive perspective. However, this approach often neglects noncognitive factors, despite their significant impact on behavior. This study addresses this gap by exploring the influence of habit and affect as noncognitive factors on information disclosure, drawing on the Theory of Interpersonal Behavior (TIB) and the Heuristic-Systematic Model (HSM). Method: This research employs a comprehensive model that integrates both noncognitive factors (habit and affect) and cognitive factors (privacy risk) to examine their direct and interactive effects on information disclosure. The study utilizes survey data from social network site users and applies structural equation modeling to test the proposed hypotheses. Results: The findings support the hypothesized negative moderating and bias effects, revealing a substantial direct impact of both habit and positive affect on information disclosure. Specifically, a positive affect mitigates the impact of privacy risk on information disclosure (bias effect), and habit weakens the influence of privacy risk (negative moderating effect). These results underscore the significant role of noncognitive factors and their interaction with cognitive elements in shaping information disclosure behavior. Conclusion: This study highlights the critical influence of habit and affect in the context of social networks, expanding the understanding of information disclosure beyond cognitive evaluations. The implications suggest that future research and practical applications should consider the intricate interdependencies between noncognitive and cognitive factors to more accurately predict and influence information disclosure behaviors.
Background: With the increasing importance of user-generated video platforms for marketing, sponsorship is crucial for the monetization of user-generated content, which may go against the need to cultivate emotional bonds with followers and maintain channel authenticity. To mitigate the negative effects associated with sponsorship disclosure, this study focuses on the exploration of appropriate disclosure timing and examines the impact of disclosure timing on endorsement effectiveness for user-generated videos. Method: Anchored in attribution theory, we employed a scenario-based survey method involving 355 valid responses to investigate the impact of sponsorship disclosure timing (prior, concurrent, and post) on endorsement effectiveness and the possible moderating role of emotional attachment. Results: The results indicate that only concurrent sponsorship disclosure positively impacts consumers' attitudes and subsequent endorsement effectiveness, while prior and post sponsorship disclosure exert negative impacts. The moderating role of emotional attachment was not supported by the current empirical evidence. Conclusion: Our study advances the research on sponsorship disclosure by providing an in-depth understanding of disclosure timing, exploring new methods compatible with the current trends in user-generated video platforms and providing valuable guidance for marketers to optimize the use of sponsored content.
Background: Diverging from prior information system (IS) research that investigates the impact of information technology (IT) usage and its correlates of technostress and techno-insecurity, we examine the role of employees' perceptions of IT advancement and its relationship to their work behaviors. Drawing on conservation of resources (COR) theory, we propose that if employees perceive their jobs may be replaced by smart technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and algorithmic (STARA) technologies-that is, if they have a high perceived STARA awareness-then their knowledge-hiding behavior will be elicited via feelings of job insecurity. Method: We conducted a two-wave survey in the United States with an interval of one month using Connect-Cloud Research's sampling system. Referencing the Automation Risk Score from the website Will Robots Take My Job? (https://willrobotstakemyjob.com/), we obtained a sample of 165 participants of a wide distribution of possibilities for job replacement by STARA technologies. Results: Our study results provide external validity for the STARA awareness scale and support the proposed hypotheses. Specifically, we find that STARA awareness is positively related to feelings of job insecurity and to knowledge-hiding behavior via feelings of job insecurity. Conclusion: This study adds to the literature on technological development and knowledge management by highlighting that employees' perceptions of IT advancement may have a consequential negative impact on their work behavior. We suggest that organizations in most Asia Pacific economies, which are still in earlier phases of AI integration, can leverage the temporal gap to implement proactive measures to mitigate negative consequences of such perceptions. Also, given that fear about uncertain technological changes can prompt self-serving responses, organizations should prioritize transparent communication to alleviate employees' job insecurity and lower their knowledge-hiding behavior. Management should invest in human resource initiatives to address these concerns, especially for employees who are facing imminent displacement by new technologies.
Background: The rise of live streaming has transformed the e-commerce landscape, enabling realtime interaction between broadcasters and viewers while enhancing immediacy, interactivity, and emotional engagement. Therefore, studying the emotional communication and interaction methods between broadcasters and viewers holds significant importance for improving live streaming sales. Method: The study integrated the Interaction Ritual Chain and Emotional Labor Strategy to create the combined IRC-ELS model. We proposed four hypotheses and designed two studies, which successfully collected 300 and 245 valid questionnaires respectively. Three of the hypotheses received empirical support. Results: The broadcasters' emotional labor strategy significantly influence viewers' consumption intention. Viewers' emotional identification with the broadcaster mediates the effect of emotional labor strategy on consumption intention. Emotional identification also directly affects consumption intention. However, emotional interaction does not moderate the relationship between emotional labor strategy and emotional identification. Conclusion: Through the IRC-ELS model, our research enriches the literature on broadcaster behavior and viewer consumption intention. It highlights the importance of broadcasters' emotional communication. The findings can also provide Asian live streaming enterprises with applicable research results on broadcaster behavior, demonstrating universal relevance.
Background: The cost-effectiveness and brand impact of viral marketing have driven extensive research across disciplines. With the proliferation of online social networks over the past decade, viral marketing in online social networks (OSNVM) has emerged as a transformative yet fragmented research domain. Method: We integrate the socio-technical systems (STS) perspective to categorize these studies into two streams: behavioral and data science, and use thematic analysis to analyze the articles further. The behavioral stream focuses on the behavioral aspects of marketing content, senders, receivers, and their impact on the effectiveness of viral marketing campaigns. The data science stream views viral marketing campaigns from a data network perspective, focusing mainly on network structure, scope, algorithms and pattern of dissemination. Results: Although both streams are potentially complementary and can benefit from each other, prior studies tend to take a blinkered perspective, drawing mainly from one or the other research tradition, thus missing opportunities for synergy and a better understanding of the phenomenon of interest. This study develops an integrative framework bridging these paradigms through thematic analysis, specifically identifying research gaps and future directions for information systems scholarship. Conclusion: This study bridges the disciplinary divide through a thematic framework enabling integrated OSNVM analysis. The framework systematically integrates behavioral and data science perspectives, enhancing conceptual clarity while establishing interdisciplinary connections. It identifies critical research gaps at this intersection, guiding future model development. Practically, it equips marketers with dual optimization strategies combining behavioral insights and data science analytics. These dual advances bridge theoretical and applied domains, establishing new standards for evidence-based campaign design.
Background: Organizational agility (OA) is recognized as a vital capability for competitiveness in dynamic business environments. While IT capabilities are acknowledged as a potential source of OA, there is limited research on the agility-enabling role of IT ambidexterity (ITA), which is the dual pursuit of IT exploitation and IT exploration. In particular, the influence of ITA on market capitalizing agility (MCA) and operational adjustment agility (OAA), which are key agility dimensions, remains unexplored. Although prior work has argued that intermediary organizational capabilities may be required to translate IT capabilities into OA, no previous studies have considered the role of organizational change capacity (OCC), in the ITA-OA relationship. To address these gaps, we draw on the dynamic capability view and the IT-enabled agility literature to examine the relationships between ITA and MCA, OAA, and OA, and propose that OCC mediates these relationships. Method: A comprehensive quantitative approach, involving the development of a robust research instrument, was used to empirically investigate the relationships between the constructs. Survey data was collected from 173 IT professionals. The analysis was performed using partial least squares structural equation modelling to assess the measurement model and to test the hypotheses. Results: Our findings reveal that ITA has a direct positive impact on MCA, OAA, and OA, while OCC partially mediates the ITA-MCA, ITA-OAA, and ITA-OA relationships. All measurement and structural model assessment criteria were met, demonstrating the robustness of our conceptualized model. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of balancing IT exploitation and exploration to foster OA, particularly through OAA and MCA, and introduces OCC as an intermediary capability that facilitates the translation of ITA into OA, and its dimensions. The theoretical arguments and empirical evidence offer insights for future research and organizational practice into the direct and indirect role of ITA in developing organizational dynamic capabilities.
Background: The rise of online social networks (ONS) has significantly transformed how people consume information, engage in discussions, and form opinions. On OSNs, individuals often refrain from speaking when exposed to environments where opposing viewpoints dominate. However, prior research has not thoroughly examined how users with different stances-opponents, supporters, and neutral actors-interact in discussions of controversial and uncontroversial topics. Method: This study investigates how controversy influences network growth and homophiles on Reddit, using 28 meme posts as a sample. We collected and analyzed user comments to map the interaction networks and examined the network growth across different time intervals: 3, 6, 9, and 12 hours after the original post. Commenters' stances were identified through human coding, and the Exponential Random Graph Model (ERGM) was employed to analyze relational dynamics. Centrality measures assessed the influence and interaction patterns among different actors. Results: The findings reveal that interaction networks for controversial memes grow faster than uncontroversial memes, with distinct reciprocal interactions between individuals. Notably, opponents in controversial discussions exhibited weaker connections with members who shared the same stance and stronger engagement with supporters. In contrast, supporters were likelier to connect with individuals with the same stance. Conclusion: This study found that users who hold differing opinions from the authors tend to connect with individuals holding opposing viewpoints, expressing their beliefs and attitudes on controversial topics. Meanwhile, supporters who align with the authors' views-representing most users-tend to form connections with those who share the same stance. These findings challenge the Spiral of Silence (SoS) theory, which posits that individuals remain silent in environments where their views are in the minority. By examining user interactions on controversial and uncontroversial issues, this study extends the SoS theory. Additionally, the research offers practical contributions, mainly for marketing strategies that aim to leverage the dynamics of controversial and uncontroversial discussions. While interaction networks of controversial topics grow more rapidly, they also tend to reach saturation faster.
Background: Firms face increased data breach threats nowadays, creating a lack of consumer confidence. Increased data breach incidents are a major concern for every firm. However, in hospitals, it is paramount to safeguard medical records. A slight change in patient records can result in a life-threatening medical condition for a patient. Existing literature claims that cybersecurity investment has indeed increased the instances of data breach incidents. The adoption of Health Information Exchange (HIE) has exacerbated this risk by increasing multiple channels for potential hackers. We, therefore, analyze the relationship between cybersecurity investment and possible data breaches in the presence of moderating variables: adoption of HIE and entrepreneurial orientation to find a model to help minimize data breach incidents. Method: We test our hypotheses based on strategic alignment and resource orchestration theories. We merge two different datasets (HIMSS and the HHS website) to create a panel dataset with 24,587 observations on U.S. hospitals over five years (2013-2017). We then run a regression using SAS to analyze our model. Results: We find that cybersecurity investment has no significance in the data breach threats. However, when a hospital joins HIE, cybersecurity investment tends to reduce the data breach threats. We also find that hospitals with higher entrepreneurial orientation face reduced data breach threats when joining HIE. Conclusion: Hospitals should align their cybersecurity investment with their cybersecurity policies to generate maximum benefit from their cybersecurity investment. Failure to do so might result in a situation in which hospitals are always likely to face higher data security risks regardless of the level of cybersecurity investment.
Background: While the continuance intention of mobile apps has been extensively researched in tourism contexts, few studies have explored the continuance intention of mobile apps in the specific context of theme park apps from a configurational perspective. This study seeks to bridge this gap by exploring the different combinations of various perceived values and user features that lead to the continuance intention of theme park apps. Method: The fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) approach is used to examine the combined effect of perceived value (i.e., functional value, convenience value, hedonic value, and social value) and user features (i.e., travel frequency to theme parks and smartphone usage habit) on users' continuance intention of theme park apps. In addition, the perceived functional value and recommended routes. The proposed conceptual model was tested with survey data gathered Results: The results revealed six distinct configurations of causal conditions leading to users' continuance intention, which were further classified into two first-order equifinality solutions. Specifically, the first solution highlights perceived online order and convenience value as core conditions, while the second solution suggests that the importance of different subtypes of perceived functional value varies depending on the presence of other conditions. Conclusion: This study offers new insights into understanding the continuance intention of theme park apps from a configurational perspective, complementing traditional SEM-based IS behavioral intention research. Additionally, it provides a more nuanced understanding of the drivers of continuance intention by categorizing perceived value into four distinct dimensions and incorporating user features related to IS usage and travel habits. This study offers practical suggestions for the theme park operators to strengthen users' continued usage intention of the theme park app by providing value-added and personalized app services.
Background: As digital technologies and omnichannel strategies continue to evolve, the retail industry is witnessing a shift from multichannel to omnichannel approaches, with online-to-offline (O2O) services emerging as a significant trend. This study investigates the impact of O2O services on consumer behavior, focusing on how online service experiences influence brand image and offline purchase intentions. Method: The study used an online questionnaire to collect data from individuals who have experience using O2O services. The target respondents are those familiar with both mobile apps and physical stores. Starbucks was chosen as an example. A total of 204 Starbucks customers were surveyed to assess their online service experience, brand image, satisfaction, and offline purchase intentions. PLS-SEM was used to evaluate the hypotheses presented in the research model. Results: The results indicate that (1) online service experience positively influences brand image, online satisfaction, and offline purchase intention; (2) brand image enhances both online satisfaction and offline purchase intention; and (3) online satisfaction further drives offline purchase intention. Conclusion: This study fills a gap in the literature regarding online service experience with O2O services contributing to offline purchase intention. We discovered the importance of online service experience and brand image in O2O services. These results are important for practitioners especially in retailing industry.
Background: The existing body of research on augmented reality (AR) and purchase intention has primarily focused on conceptual and strategic reviews, technical issues, user evaluation, and product presentation aspects, often neglecting the psychological states that may influence consumers' purchase decisions. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining social AR, which involves the use of AR for social purposes, with a focus on point-of-view (POV) sharing, social empowerment, flow, and perceived ownership. By investigating these cognitive and affective factors within the framework of stimulus-organism-response (SOR) theory, we aim to uncover their potential impact on purchase intentions and the likelihood of consumers advocating for AR-enabled applications, known as app evangelism. Through this exploration, our goal is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex interaction between psychological factors and AR technology in shaping consumer behavior. Method: Participants were recruited through online platforms such as Facebook and PTT BBS to fill out the questionnaire, resulting in a total of 411 questionnaires collected over a five-week period in 2021. After removing invalid entries, 335 valid responses were retained for statistical analysis.. Results: In the context of social AR, POV sharing correlates with social empowerment and purchase intention, yet does not directly impact perceived ownership. Conversely, social empowerment is associated with flow, perceived ownership, and purchase intention. Regarding app evangelism, the study finds significant relationships between flow and perceived ownership with app evangelism, indicating that attachment to a brand and immersive experiences contribute to brand advocacy. Conclusion: The investigation into purchase intention reveals significant relationships with both POV sharing and social empowerment, highlighting the importance of flow and perceived ownership in influencing consumers' perspectives on purchase decisions and app evangelism. Managerial implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.
