
Several textbooks about medical photography have been published since the mid-20th century, but none covers the techniques and workflow involved with digital technology. A proposal was put to Focal Press for a new textbook covering the full range of clinical photography and encompassing a fully digital workflow. This article discusses previous textbooks and describes the process for this modern publication, which is edited by three professional clinical photographers. Key stages of the book production are described: contributing authors and areas of specialty, content development including image production, and some of the challenges faced. The book is available worldwide, using the print-on-demand (PoD) process.
Lecture-based conferences may be sub-optimal for peer interaction. The 2022-2024 Johns Hopkins/Augusta Student Exchange conferences experimented with Design Sprint-based team projects to encourage organic bond-building. Post-Exchange surveys showed that students valued career-focused programming and named networking as most important. This paper describes the Student Exchange team projects, survey feedback, and lessons learned, and encourages organizers of professional conferences, workshops, and classrooms to experiment with activities that can promote connections that span across careers.
Transgender patients that have undergone metoidioplasty with urethral lengthening may face challenges in healthcare settings that necessitate urinary catheterization. Currently, there are no readily accessible resources that aim to inform nurses about the appearance and treatment of this anatomy. Here, a 3D animation has been created, showing labelled comparative anatomy. Evaluation of this animation will result in valuable feedback of which video elements have facilitated successful learning. Implications for this project call attention to the need for gender-diverse representation within urinary catheterization and healthcare in the United States.
Kidneys produce and transport urine using an extensive system of blood vessels and a series of tubular structures. Many of these anatomical structures are visible during dissection with the unaided eye or low-power magnification. In this paper we survey the variety of ways gross anatomy of the human kidney has been illustrated in past centuries. These examples demonstrate alternatives to depicting a frontal section of the kidney, a view that is commonly used in contemporary illustrations but provides limited information about the morphology and organization of internal kidney anatomy.

We have selected the winning entries of the last decade to showcase the variety, breadth and depth of work in these award-winning images. BioImages is the BioCommunications Association's annual visual media competition that showcases the finest still, graphics and motion media work in the life sciences and medicine. Entries are evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges based on intent, execution, design and impact. In 2021 a new judging procedure was developed and implemented, award names and categories were changed. Prior to 2021 the top awards were the Best of Show, Award of Excellence and Citation of Merit plus the Special Awards.

Netter’s oeuvre has been the go-to reference for generations of anatomy students and practitioners. His ability to depict diseases through the experience of everyday people makes his illustrations relatable, albeit largely focused on the white middle-class. While this he may have been a product of his era, we now recognize how a lack of representation in medical illustration leads to health disparities. An inclusive approach to visual communication promotes empathy, cultural humility, humanism – all qualities that make for better doctors.
