
Reappearance of AFP was demonstrated in a single rat out of a large control population. At autopsy, this DOCA-hypertensive rat was found to have a form of hepatitis associated with proliferative activity, i.e., cellular unrest, mitotic figures and oval cell hyperplasia. It is submitted that increased AFP synthesis in this animal with spontaneous hepatitis is causally related to hepatocellular regeneration.
During acute HBsAg serum positive viral hepatitis, the surface antigen was not detectable in duodenal bile but was almost always present in gallbladder and hepatic bile when cholecystokinin was intravenously administered. The immunologic nondemonstrability of HBsAg in duodenal bile is probably due to the presence of a factor elaborated by the intestinal mucosa. The possible role played by this factor in the non transmission of type B viral hepatitis via faecal-oral route is suggested.
Squamous cell carcinomas were induced in the hamster cheek pouch with 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene. The process of carcinogenesis was inhibited by phenylphosphate, an inducer of alkaline phosphatase. Orthophosphate and l-phenylalanine, which inhibit alkaline phosphatase, had a promoting effect on tumor formation. The results are in accordance with those of previous studies on the effect of inducers of alkaline phosphatase on chemical carcinogenesis. The effect of the studied substances on carcinogenesis was apparently unrelated to the presence of phenyl or phosphate groups or of steroid rings. The tumor inhibition or promotion seemed to be related to the potential of the tested substances to induce or inhibit alkaline phosphatase activity.
The role of the kidneys in hepatic carcinogenesis was studies in inbred A X C strain male rats ingesting 0.025% N-2-fluorenyldiacetamide. The experimental groups consisted of male rats with both kidney intact and male rats that had the left kidney removed. The incidence of hepatic carcinomas and the number of rats with large carcinomas, multiple carcinomas, poorly differentiated and undifferentiated carcinomas, and metastases was greater in rats with a left nephrectomy. The incidence of cirrhosis was the same in animals in both groups; however, cirrhosis was more severe in degree in the rats with the left kidney removed. Some animals in the latter group also developed carcinosarcomas of the salivary glands. The animals with one kidney apparently were not able to excrete the active metabolites of N-2-fluorenyldiacetamide as readily as the animals with both kidneys intact. The metabolites were then returned to the liver and salivary gland.
Following intravenous injection of mycobacteria in the mouse the bacilli are regularly found in the peripheral nervous system after the 5th day. The peripheral nerves and autonomic ganglia are involved at the level of the perineural cells and the sheath of Schwann. When the organisms are of low virulence (BCG, Mycobacterium intracellulare) the development of the nodules is limited. In the case of a virulent strain (Ravenel) extensive granulomas are found but epitheloid cells, always found in other organs, are constantly absent. In animals previously immunized, the bacilli seem to implant themselves as in the controls, but multiply more slowly; the nodules are more infrequent and the lymphoid infiltration appears earlier with the multiplication of interstitial cells.

An outbreak of approximately 200 cases of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis is described in Prekmurje, a northern province in Yugoslavia. The epidemic was caused by enterovirus type 70, serologically identical with the causative agents of similar outbreaks in London and Japan. The origin of the outbreak could not be elucidated but a link was seen between this case and a small outbreak in Veenendaal in the Netherlands.
