
Objective:This report presents anthropometric reference data for the U.S. population age 2 years and older during August 2021-August 2023. Methods:Body measurements were obtained from 8,545 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) participants age 2 years and older during August 2021-August 2023. Measurements included weight, height, circumferences, and limb lengths. Results:Weighted population means, standard errors of the means, and selected percentiles of body measurement values are reported for participants age 2 years and older. Body measurement results are shown by sex and age. Conclusions:These nationally representative NHANES data show the distribution of measured weight, height, body mass index, circumferences, and lengths in the U.S. population during August 2021-August 2023.
This report describes and compares maternalcharacteristics and infant outcomes by maternal place of birth (that is, whether the mother was born in the United States or in regions, subregions, and selected countries outside the United States) among births occurring in 2020.
This report presents the most current national results from the National Study of Long-Term Care Providers (NSLTCP), conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) to describe providers and services users in seven major sectors of paid, regulated postacute and long-term care services in the United States.
Based on nationally representative anthropometric data, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has published reference tables on the distribution of various body measurements for the U.S. population (1-5). National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data are the primary source of body measurement information for the U.S. population. These measurements reflect the mean weight, height, length, and various circumferences of U.S. children and adults. Anthropometry is a measure of nutritional or general health status, dietary adequacy, and growth. This report presents anthropometric reference data from the years 2015-2018 for U.S. children and adults.
Maternal mortality is a critical indicator of population health in both the United States and internationally (1-3). Monitoring maternal mortality over time is important to evaluate progress in improving maternal health in the United States, to make international comparisons, and to examine differences and inequities by demographic subgroup (3). Substantial disparities in maternal mortality exist by race and Hispanic origin and age in the United States (4-6). Maternal and pregnancy-related mortality rates for non-Hispanic black women are approximately three times the rates for non-Hispanic white women, while women aged 40 and over have the highest maternal mortality rates compared with other age groups (4,6,7).
In their study of deaths associated with underweight, overweight, and obesity, Dr Flegal and colleagues1 conclude that excess mortality due to obesity and overweight is much lower than previously reported. We believe that their analysis is flawed and misleading. A major challenge in such studies is that low weight is often due to underlying chronic disease, which may exist for many years before death. Thus, lean persons are a mix of smokers, healthy active persons, and those with chronic illness (due to the direct effects of disease on weight and sometimes purposeful weight loss motivated by diagnosis of a serious illness). Their analysis does not successfully disentangle this diverse group.
The body of nationally representative health statistics for the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) population is limited, because even the largest health surveys generally do not have an adequate NHPI sample to calculate reliable NHPI statistics. Using data from the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander National Health Interview Survey (NHPI NHIS) from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), this report fills this gap by presenting statistics on health conditions and behaviors for (a) the total NHPI population and the multiple- and singlerace NHPI populations, in comparison with other federal race groups and the total U.S. population; (b) single-race NHPI persons compared with multiple-race NHPI persons; and (c) detailed NHPI race groups in comparison with each other and the total U.S.POPULATION:

Long-term care services provided by paid, regulated providers are an important component of personal health care spending in the United States. This report presents the most current national descriptive results from the National Study of Long-Term Care Providers (NSLTCP), which is conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Data presented are drawn from multiple sources, primarily NCHS surveys of adult day services centers and residential care communities (covers 2014 data year); and administrative records obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS) on home health agencies, hospices, and nursing homes (covers 2013 and 2014 data years). This report provides information on the supply, organizational characteristics, staffing, and services offered by paid, regulated providers of long-term care services; and the demographic, health, and functional composition of users of these services. Services users include residents of nursing homes and residential care communities, patients of home health agencies and hospices, and participants of adult day services centers. This report updates "Long-Term Care Services in the United States: 2013 Overview" (available from: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nsltcp/long_term_care_services_2013.pdf), which covered data years 2011 and 2012. In contrast, the title of this report and future reports will reflect the years of the data used rather than the publication year, in this case 2013 through 2014. Objective - This report presents national estimates of incontinence prevalence in the United States using data source-specific definitions of incontinence among persons aged 65 and over by sociodemographic characteristics during 2007-2010. Methods - Data are from the 2007-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the 2010 National Survey of Residential Care Facilities (NSRCF), the 2007 National Home and Hospice Care Survey (NHHCS), and the 2009 Long Term Care Minimum Data Set (MDS). Findings are based on in-home interviews with 2,625 noninstitutionalized respondents (NHANES) and reports provided by designated facility or agency staff members for 6,856 residential care facility (RCF) residents (NSRCF), 3,226 current home health care patients (NHHCS), 3,918 hospice discharges (NHHCS), and 2,416,705 nursing home residents (MDS). Response rates for incontinence questions were 84% among noninstitutionalized persons (NHANES), 98% among RCF residents and home health and hospice care patients (NSRCF and NHHCS), and 99% for nursing home residents (MDS). Results - This is the first report presenting national estimates on incontinence for subpopulations of older persons sampled in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics surveys and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Long Term Care Minimum Data Set. Because a different definition of incontinence is used by each data collection system, it is not possible to make data comparisons between them or to summarize results across all surveys. Accordingly, only survey-specific results are presented. Including recent data from all of these data collection systems facilitates a multidimensional picture of incontinence, while underscoring the need for a standardized definition.

BACKGROUND:Asthma is prevalent but treatable: adherence to evidence-based treatment lessens impairment and lowers the risk of future exacerbations.OBJECTIVE:This report details recent trends in asthma prevalence, health care use, and mortality since 2001 and presents an overview of trends since 1980.METHODS:Asthma prevalence estimates were obtained from the National Health Interview Survey (2001-2010). Physician office visit data were obtained from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, hospital outpatient department and emergency department (ED) visit data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, hospitalization data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey, and death data from the National Vital Statistics System (2001-2009). Two types of rates were calculated: population-based rates based on the total population and risk-based rates based on the population with asthma.RESULTS:Current asthma prevalence increased from 2001 to 2010. There were no significant changes in rates for hospital outpatient department visits, ED visits, or hospitalizations, whereas risk-based rates for private physician office visits declined. Asthma death rates decreased from 2001 to 2009. Over the long term, asthma prevalence rose more slowly after 2001 than during 1980-1996, asthma hospitalizations declined since 1984 and deaths declined since 1999. Disparities by race and sex for adverse outcomes remained high despite these declines.CONCLUSION:Since 2001, asthma prevalence increased, risk-based rates for visits to private physician offices and deaths declined, and risk-based rates for other types of ambulatory visits and for hospitalizations showed no clear trend.
Objective-Life expectancy without activity limitations or active life expectancy is one of the health expectancy measures that is used to summarize population health. The measure differentiates the remaining years of life that are expected to be spent with activity limitations from expected years of life without activity limitations. The objective of this study was to estimate life expectancy with and without activity limitations for the white and black populations of the United States in the years 2000-2006, focusing on expected years free of chronic condition-induced activity limitations. Methods-Life expectancies for the total as well as the white and black populations for the years 2000-2006 were calculated separately using abridged single decrement life tables. Expected years of life with and without chronic condition-induced activity limitations were calculated using Sullivan's method. The statistical analysis is based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Health Statistics. Results-Results of the study show that during the 7-year period, expected years free of chronic condition-induced activity limitations increased for the total population as well as the white and black populations of both sexes. For the total population, all males and all females, years free of chronic condition-induced activity limitations increased significantly at all ages except at 85 and over. Expected years free of chronic condition-induced activity limitations increased at age 75 and under for the white population and at age 65 and under for the black population.
OBJECTIVE:This report presents data on U.S. deaths to pregnant or recently pregnant women, summarizes long-term processing issues, and examines recent changes affecting the data and the impact of the changes on the statistics for these women.METHODS:This report presents descriptive tabulations of information reported on death certificates that are completed by funeral directors, attending physicians, medical examiners, and coroners. The original records are filed in the state registration offices. Statistical information is compiled into a national database through the Vital Statistics Cooperative Program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Causes of death are processed in accordance with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).RESULTS:Maternal mortality fluctuates from year to year but was 12.1 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2003. The implementation of the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) in 1999 resulted in about a 13 percent increase in the number of deaths identified as maternal deaths between 1998 and 1999. The rate increased again between 2002 and 2003 after a separate pregnancy question became a standard item on the U.S. Standard Certificate of Death. The adoption of a standard separate question on pregnancy facilitates the identification of late maternal deaths.CONCLUSION:Maternal deaths increased with the introduction of the ICD-10 and with changes associated with the addition of a separate pregnancy status question on the U.S. Standard Certificate of Death. These changes may result in better identification of maternal deaths.
OBJECTIVES:This report describes the sociodemographics, household characteristics, and health of women according to workforce status and job conditions. The report also presents data on men for comparison. METHODS:This report combines data from numerous data systems, including: The National Health Interview Survey, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, National Maternal and Infant Health Survey, National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities Surveillance System, and the National Occupational Mortality Surveillance System, which are conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries and Annual Survey of Occupational injuries and illnesses conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor; and the Current Population Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The report also presents selected tables from publications of the Women's Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor. RESULTS:The report presents summary data on physical conditions and exposures, health conditions attributed to work, other health conditions that impact on work, health promotion in the workplace, and health-related benefits provided by employers. Most estimates are shown according to sex, age, race, ethnicity, educational attainment, and major occupational group.
In summary, this section suggests that hospital care and physician office care are frequently used community health care services. There were relatively few differences by sex, age, or race in patterns of community health service use. There were differences by sex, age, race, and level of ADL disability in the number of informal helpers a frail elder used. Marital patterns appear to be an important underlying influence on the number of informal helpers. When a spouse is present, he or she becomes the primary and only helper in many instances. The number of informal helpers that a frail elder had was associated with an increased risk of mortality and institutionalization. Overall, there is somewhat more stability than change in the number of informal helpers over the 2-year period. This section, however, could not identify if the composition of the informal helper network remained the same over time.
