The convergence of energy transmission and data communication has become a key feature of decentralized energy systems across a broad spectrum of voltage/power ranges, including smart grid applications and cyber-physical power systems to enable digital power. This article compares two distinct approaches—power line communications (PLC) and talkative power conversion (TPC)—and proposes a hybrid combination thereof to inherit their advantages and improve system performance. While PLC leverages existing power infrastructure for data transmission by using external data transmitters and receivers, TPC integrates communication capabilities directly into power electronic converters. We present the technical foundations and applications of PLC and TPC, benchmark their strengths and bottlenecks, and outline future research directions regarding TPC that could bridge the gap between power and communication technologies. The benefits of hybrid PLC-TPC are identified, and coexistence is verified experimentally.
Creating a sustainable future through the development of environmentally friendly products and industry is just one of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) where power electronics (PEs) will play a major role. Moreover, biomedical applications, economic growth, and efficient production are among the areas directly impacted by PEs developments. This article presents how industrial electronics (IEs) and, particularly, PEs are shaping multiple activity sectors, helping them to accomplish the SDGs defined by the United Nations.
The line-commutated converter-based high-voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) transmission technology is the primary choice for long-distance and high-capacity transmission. But there is an inherent risk of commutation failure (CF), which seriously threatens the safe and stable operation of the power grid. This article proposes a hybrid commutated converter (HCC) based on reverse blocking integrated gate-commutated thyristor (RB-IGCT), which can completely solve the problem of CF. Firstly, the topology design and control methods of HCC are introduced. On this basis, key technological breakthroughs, including voltage equalization design, saturable reactor optimization, and reactive power optimization are introduced separately. Detailed experiments, including synthetic circuit operation tests and system operation tests, have verified the reliability of HCC technology. HCC technology will be applied to the renovation project of China’s Lingbao converter station in September 2025.
The awareness of sustainability in the design of electric machines is growing rapidly, driven by the goal of reducing carbon emissions throughout the entire product life cycle, from raw material sourcing and manufacturing to operation, recycling and reuse. Recent research trends reflect this shift, leading to design strategies that reduce environmental impact [1], [2] and improve recyclability [3], [4], through ease of disassembly [5], [6] and the use of fully recyclable materials. Meanwhile, the implementation of sustainable strategies in the development of electric machines can pose challenges in boosting other key performance indicators (KPIs), such as power density and efficiency, and, in some cases, requires modifications to traditional and widespread manufacturing equipment. Accordingly, designers need to face trade-offs across multiple aspects of the design, carefully balancing electromagnetic performance, thermal behavior, and manufacturability. In this context, addressing the sustainability challenge requires a paradigm shift in the definition of the design priorities: from performance driven to application driven, where the focus is no longer solely on the product itself but on the user needs. Focusing on a concrete case, this article addresses the challenge of replacing copper hairpin windings with aluminum, which are more sustainable because of their lower environmental impact and higher recyclability but feature higher electric resistivity and ensuing DC Joule losses, possibly leading to higher thermal load and a decrease in efficiency. Similarly, different material workability requires re-adaptation of the manufacturing processes. The aim of this article is to support the transition toward more sustainable electric machines for the traction of both passenger and utility vehicles. These applications are characterized by transient peak-load operation during acceleration, continuous power operation in demanding conditions such as road gradients, and low-load operation across urban, extra-urban, and highway driving. Accordingly, these real operating conditions, including the representative Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) driving cycle, form the basis of the analysis. On this foundation, the paper provides guidelines and best practices for the design and development of aluminum hairpin stators, covering electromagnetic, thermal, and manufacturing aspects.
