On November 21, 2025, French Senator Jocelyne Guidez and eleven other senators introduced an amendment (No. 159) to the 2026 Social Security Financing Bill (Projet de Loi de Financement de la S & eacute;curit & eacute; Sociale [PLFSS]) aimed at banning psychoanalytic therapies in mental health services in France. The amendment's objective was to & laquo;ensure the scientific coherence and efficiency of health insurance spending>>, as & laquo;psychoanalytic therapies, particularly when applied to neurodevelopmental disorders, anxiety, depression, and chronic psychiatric conditions, currently lack scientific validation>>. This proposal-which, however, was not supported by research data-caused great concern among clinicians and the academic community (psychologists, psychiatrists, professional organizations, etc.), with various initiatives, including a petition that collected over 100,000 signatures to defend the diversity of therapeutic approaches in mental health. The government also opposed the amendment, which was quickly withdrawn. It is argued that psychoanalytic therapies are effective, and some of the main controlled studies on the effectiveness of psychoanalytic therapies are listed and described.
Psychoanalytic therapy is examined by highlighting its social and cultural determinants, focusing on the concepts of repression and resistance. Repression is shown to originate not only from fear of external punishment or loss of love from significant others, but above all from the threat of social isolation and loss of communal support. Resistance inevitably emerges in analytic treatment as an indicator that repressed material is being approached. The traditional analytic stance, characterized by neutrality and emotional detachment, is critically reassessed, arguing that it reflects the values and taboos of bourgeois society. Through a detailed discussion of Freud's views on tolerance, sexual morality, sublimation, and culture, it is argued that psychoanalytic technique may unconsciously reproduce authoritarian and patriarchal attitudes. It is important that the analyst's actual personality and unconscious attitudes are characterized by an unconditional affirmation of the patient's striving for happiness as a crucial condition for weakening resistance and achieving therapeutic change.
Georg Groddeck (1866-1934) was an innovative psychoanalyst who emphasised the physical aspect of psychotherapy at a time when the psychological viewpoint was still predominant. Describing himself as a "in the wild", he was, as Martin Grotjahn put it, "untamed", outside the borders of the psychoanalytic "pasture". Yet, at a time when Freud was dedicated to safeguarding the movement's orthodoxy, he had great sympathy for this spa doctor, who had initially opposed psychoanalysis and was now calling himself a psychoanalyst. Groddeck proposed an "id" that influenced the body. He himself claimed to be "in love" perhaps more with Freud than with psychoanalysis. This transferential bond, though inverted, is reminiscent of the relationship between the young Freud and Fliess in Berlin, who initially encouraged Freud to pursue his theories, which were unconventional at the time. Starting from the correspondence between Freud and Groddeck, it is described the relationship in which Freud relives his early years of professional life while impersonating Fliess, and sees in Groddeck himself, the original thinker who tried to affirm his theories in spite of the adverse psychiatric culture of the time.
The concept of the analytic third has become central to contemporary relational and intersubjective psychoanalysis, offering a compelling language for describing the emergent, ineffable qualities of analytic experience. Yet metaphors in psychoanalysis often acquire ontological weight, and the analytic third risks becoming more than a metaphor: a quasi-agential "field" that displaces the primacy of the individual mind. The analytic third is examined in the context of the postmodern turn in psychoanalysis and it is argued that its explanatory reach is limited when applied to severe psychopathology. Drawing on critical realism, I distinguish epistemological modesty (the mediated, dialogical nature of analytic knowing) from ontological inflation (the idea that psychopathology is best understood as being co-constructed between two people). Borderline personality disorder serves as a test case, as its striking repetition across relationships implies enduring internal structure rather than purely co-constructed disturbance. A balanced position preserves relational process without dissolving intrapsychic reality.
Agoraphobic syndrome is approached from various perspectives. The discussion of the various explanations of agoraphobia that have emerged over the years shows that important changes have occurred in psychoanalytic theory. The etiology and maintenance of agoraphobia include the role of genetic factors, intrapsychic and interpersonal dynamics, and the influence of social conditions. The contributions of attachment theory and some non-psychoanalytic research that have contributed to the understanding of agoraphobic syndrome are also examined, emphasizing the importance of reinforcement and generalization of anxiety, and the effectiveness of the exposure technique. A clinical example is also presented. The conclusion is that understanding and treating agoraphobia requires a multimodal and interdisciplinary approach.
The progressive affirmation of the bodily-relational paradigm arouses resistance. That the mind is relational, embodied and situated; that empathy is prelinguistic and pre-intentional; that the observer is within the observed system-these are consolidated insights based on experimental evidence. Building on these insights, empathy in the therapeutic relationship shows how the relationship between epistemology and practice is redefined, seeking the conditions for a practice based on the ongoing pursuit of engagement and detachment, proposing one of the most advanced perspectives to consider.
