The intensification of droughts, heatwaves and floods is increasing crop vulnerability and compromising food security, which requires a robust scientific basis to guide agricultural adaptation supported by remote sensing. This study aimed to describe and quantitatively analyse the evolution of research on remote sensing-based crop climate vulnerability, identifying temporal, geographical and thematic patterns. A quantitative, exploratory, descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective bibliometric design was applied to 2,343 Scopus records published between 1985 and 2026, processed in Bibliometrix 5.1.1 and VOSviewer 1.6.20 through productivity, impact and collaboration indicators, together with RPYS. The results show an annual growth rate of 4%, 627 sources, 10,408 authors, 5.17 co-authors per document, 35.3% international collaboration and 19.93 citations per document, with leadership by China, the United States and India. Remote Sensing and Science of the Total Environment concentrated dissemination, while machine learning and Google Earth Engine shaped the recent agenda. The study concludes that the field has reached scientific and technological maturity, consolidated remote sensing as a strategic axis for assessing, modelling and anticipating agricultural vulnerability, and advanced towards predictive approaches with high relevance for climate change adaptation.
Linear erosion is a significant geomorphological process that progresses through distinct stages—rills, gullies, and ravines—shaped by natural and anthropogenic factors. While extensively studied in rural environments, its occurrence and dynamics in urban areas remain understudied, despite their implications for infrastructure stability and urban planning. This study evaluates how parent material, soil types, land use, rainfall erosivity, and geomorphometric variables influence the formation of gullies and ravines in urban areas, using a case study in São Paulo State, Brazil. We used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Classification and Regression Tree (CART) algorithm to analyze mapped linear erosion features, examining variables such as relief characteristics, soil properties, land use patterns, and hydrological factors. Results indicate that surface runoff and stormwater management play a crucial role in triggering and controlling erosion. Certain soil types, such as some Red-Yellow Argisols, when associated with convergent slopes, show a lower propensity for gully formation. More broadly, anthropogenic factors—particularly upstream and downstream land use—exert the greatest influence on erosion processes in urban areas. These findings underscore the need for erosion risk assessment to be integrated into urban planning strategies, contributing to resilient city development.
This review article discusses the strategic challenge of unifying topographic and bathymetric data into a continuous model, an essential condition for managing the 5.7 million km² of the Blue Amazon and for the development of the Brazilian coastal zone. The complexity of this integration lies in the dynamic nature of multiple vertical datums that vary over time and space. It is demonstrated that the traditional connection via tide gauges or the determination of Separation Models (SEP) presents limitations at the national scale. Furthermore, conventional satellite altimetry technologies and geoid modeling reveal a significant coastal observational gap at the ocean-continent interface. Therefore, the Sea Surface Topography is fundamental for the unification of vertical references in the coastal zone; however, its rigorous determination still faces inseparable barriers in both technical-scientific and operational spheres. International experiences highlight the need for a transition to interdisciplinary approaches. It is concluded that overcoming the coastal observational gap in Brazil requires abandoning deterministic interpolations in favor of stochastic techniques, coupled with high-resolution hydrodynamic and geoidal models, aligning the country with the guidelines of the International Height Reference System (IHRS) to ensure efficient and sovereign management of its coastal and maritime territory.
In forest inventories, obtaining accurate data from forest plantations is important for estimating the production of these areas. In this context, remote sensing plays a relevant role in forest inventory activities. TLS uses LiDAR technology to collect field data and facilitate rapid acquisition of this information. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a literature review on the use of TLS technology in forest plantations over the last 10 years (2012–2022). In the bibliographic survey conducted during this period, 19 scientific publications published in 9 journals were selected. The year with the highest number of publications was 2022 (42.10%). In total, 12 different TLS sensors were identified among the analyzed studies, with the RIEGL VZ-400 being the most frequently used. In general, the studies addressed topics related to 3D point cloud registration, extraction of dendrometric metrics, and application of TLS in forest environments. The results indicated that the adoption of multiple scanning positions contributes to mitigating the effects of occlusion caused by tree density and understory vegetation, resulting in higher tree detection rates and more reliable estimates of DBH and tree height.
This study evaluated four Global Gridded Population datasets (GPWv4, GHS-POP, HRSL, and WorldPop) to represent the distribution of the resident population in the Brazilian Amazon, focusing on their concordance with population data and adherence to a residence address density proxy. The study area was the Baixo Tocantins region, Pará, chosen for its diversity of land uses and coverages, frequency of forest remnants, and dispersed rural population across island and mainland environments. The Global Grids for 2020 were evaluated through: i) concordance analysis with resident population data, by municipality and census tract, derived from municipal estimates for 2020 and the 2022 Demographic Census, and ii) analysis of adherence to residences estimates, using data from the Brazilian National Address Register for Statistical Purposes (CNEFE), based on a residence density proxy. Mean absolute percentage errors evaluated the Grids' estimates and official data. The highest concordance errors in the population data were observed for the GPWv4 and WorldPop grids. WorldPop and GHS-POP underestimate the occurrence of residences in island and riverbank areas. The HRSL grid showed the highest concordance with Census population data and better adherence to residences estimates compared to CNEFE. Thus, in the absence of disaggregated official population data, the HRSL grid is recommended as the preferred option for studies involving population distribution in the Brazilian Amazon.
One of the main challenges currently faced by municipal administrations concerns disorderly urban occupation, which usually leads to disasters such as landslides and floods. Unfortunately, it is observed that historically, civil defense institutions have focused more on response actions rather than disaster prevention. Aiming to change this scenario, the civil defense of the city of Salvador-Bahia has been pursuing a new management model using risk mapping of critical areas to support planning and prevention efforts. To support this initiative, a conceptual modeling of geographic data was developed to aid in the production of thematic cartography for civil defense – aligned with the Technical Specification for Structuring Vector Geospatial Data (ET-EDGV Salvador) – and enabled the organization and availability of thematic data for the stakeholders involved in the process.
A configuração preferida adota valores do fator empiricamente estimados e o novo filtro morfológico proposto (T8).
Typically, the modernization of Land Administration Systems (LAS) concentrates on overarching aspects and seldom investigates the spatial infrastructure that underpins it, thereby presenting challenges for the integration of geospatial data. For this purpose, Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGS), characterized by its "congruent cartography", offer a promising solution within a multi-scale reference framework. Moreover, a significant gap exists in the absence of a DGGS designed to address the cartographic focus and usability requirements for land administration, such as equal-area sizing and geodetic precision. Developed at the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA), the ITA Cadastral Ellipsoidal Reference Tessellation (ITACaRT) was introduced as an innovative DGGS to bridge this gap. The development of ITACaRT was guided by several key criteria, including its suitability for cadastral purposes at appropriate scales, compatibility with the WGS84 ellipsoid and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), utilization of simple parallelogram-shaped equal-area cells, a direct tessellation adhering to Cartesian geometry for usability by geoinformation professionals, and decimal convergence to facilitate blockchain tokenization. Complementary to these criteria, a Compositional Hierarchical Indexing system was devised to represent cadastral vector features more efficiently than the atomic identifiers typical of conventional DGGS. ITACaRT thus establishes a solid foundation for contemporary LAS, providing a viable spatial infrastructure that supports emerging technologies such as blockchain.
SAR images are an alternative for land cover classification since these sensors obtain images almost independentlyof weather conditions. Parametric image classification methods are often based on a Gaussian distribution, simplifying statistical modeling. However, the assumption of a Gaussian distribution may not be suitable for modeling samples from SAR images. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the results of land cover classification using SAR images modeled with statistical distributions. To this end, 1000 supervised classifications were carried out on a PALSAR/ALOS image of the Lower Tapajós/PA region, using the maximum likelihood classifier adapted to the Gaussian, Gamma, and Intensity joint distribution. The analysis classes were defined as Agriculture, Exposed Soil, Pasture, Forest, and Secondary Vegetation. As a result, models with the same dimensionality and polarizations had similar overall classification performances, but itshould be noted that the bivariate models showed better overall accuracy than the univariate ones. The Gaussian distribution can replace specific distributions for SAR data without compromising overall classification performance in some cases. Concerning metrics by class, no models were found that separate all classes well, especially the Forest and Secondary Vegetation classes, whose separability is difficult. However, the Exposed Soil class is well classified in all models.
This study evaluates the Compound Maximum a posteriori (CMAP) classification of Landsat imagery to reconstruct the land-use history of shifting cultivation areas across the Amazon. We estimated agricultural cycles and secondary forest age near the Juruá, Tefé, and Tapajós rivers using annual Landsat composites (1984–2024) classified with CMAP and a generalized training strategy. Comparison with local landowner interviews showed that CMAP effectively estimates these parameters (55% within ±1 for cycles and 93% within ±3 years for age). These results demonstrate CMAP’s potential for land-use history reconstruction, with field data integration likely improving the detailing of information.
The development of geographic reasoning has been highlighted as a primary task for geography in school, especially after the approval of the National Base for Common Curriculum (BNCC). The main goal of this scientific paper is to analyze and propose ways for using cartography as a powerful tool to foster the gradual construction of students' geographic reasoning in K-12. After the introductory section, where we present arguments that support the relevance of considering the aforementioned task as an axis to this discipline and list six structural characteristics of geographic cognition, we organize the text into three more sections, followed by a synoptic conclusion. The second section is dedicated to the paradox of map in geography teaching, where we analyze the historical valorization of the map in this field of knowledge, in parallel with the contradictory underuse of it as a pedagogical resource. The third part of the text focuses on a very succinct analysis of three notable challenges for the use of cartography as a scaffold for geographic reasoning. In the fourth and longest section of the text, we endeavor to analyze and reflect on the four influences that foster the heuristic potential of map use and the possibilities they open to enhance cartography as a cognitive resource for geography in school. Our main focus is to consider and problematize the techniques underlying map making, with a more robust discussion about the rich learning possibilities contained in cartographies not based on the Euclidean space.
The preservation of biodiversity hotspots in rapidly urbanizing regions is an increasing global concern. In this context, the present study employs remote sensing techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of public policies in the Serra do Japi Reserve, a rare Atlantic Forest remnant in São Paulo State, renowned for its ecological richness and high species endemism. Using multitemporal satellite imagery, the study assessed changes in vegetation cover between 2013 and 2023 to determine the impact of implemented policies, particularly following the area’s designation as a natural heritage site in 1983. The results revealed consistently high Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values within the Serra do Japi Preservation, Restoration, and Recovery Zone and the surrounding Jundiaí region over the ten-year period, indicating stable preserved vegetation cover. Histogram analysis of reclassified ΔNDVI values showed that 94.5% of pixels within the Serra do Japi Zone exhibited no significant change, while 77.5% of pixels in the urban area of Jundiaí remained stable, indicating greater vegetation variability in urbanized regions compared to the protected area. Additionally, only 2% of pixels within Serra do Japi indicated possible vegetation loss, a proportion notably lower than that observed in the municipality’s urban area. Localized vegetation loss was detected in the southern areas adjacent to the reserve, underscoring the importance of continuous monitoring and restoration efforts. The use of remote sensing proved to be a reliable and cost-effective tool for detecting subtle spatial and temporal changes in vegetation. Therefore, reinforcing conservation frameworks and ensuring the continuation of long-term monitoring programs are essential to prevent future degradation and maintain the ecological resilience of the Serra do Japi Reserve.
We evaluated reflectance spectra and spectral features of a red tide event associated with high abundances of Mesodinium rubrum. The bloom was observed on the northern coast of the State of São Paulo between 12 and 25 January 2025, with hyperspectral ocean color satellite images. The diagnostic features of phytoplankton algae were observed near 610 nm and 705 nm, with a peak at 665 nm before decreasing. The Normalized Difference Red Tide (NDRT) was developed to map red tide occurrences. For the Bloom class, NDRT values are approximately 0.90, whereas for the No Bloom class, they range from 0.25 to 0.55. We also estimated chl-a concentration using different models: Normalized Difference Chlorophyll Index (NDCI) (0 – 60 mg/m3), a method based on Two Bands Algorithm (2BDA) (0 – 275 mg/m3), Algae Bloom Monitoring Application (AlgaeMAp) (0 - 1600 mg/m3) and Ocean Color 4 (OC4) (0.35 – 0.65 mg/m3).
