The two latest 3DTV types were tested; active shutter eye-glass type and passive eye-glass type with screen having film pattern retarder. Differences in vertical resolution, cross-talk and luminance were found. This difference in vertical resolution is visible for some types of objects. How this affects the image quality is unclear.
A measurement method for the determination of the cell parameters of vertically aligned nematic LCOS devices has been developed. It provides the values for the pre-tilt angle and the cell thickness in a reliable way, without the need for spectroscopic instruments. The method is a single wavelength approach, using oblique incidence to enhance measurement accuracy The measurement system consists only of a laser source, high quality polarizers, a quarter-wave plate and a sensitive photodiode.
A novel micromirror design is presented that can be used as a pixel in a light valve. This mirror allows grey levels to be produced without the need for binary subframes. Analog pulse-width modulation (PWM) will be achieved without needing extra transistors in the CMOS layer below the mirror structure. This can be done by exploiting an electro-mechanical phenomenon known as 'pull-in'. It will be shown that it is possible to make the mirror switch from a positively tilted to a negatively tilted state and back with a duty ratio that is dependent on fixed voltages on two out of four addressing electrodes underneath the mirror. The other electrodes are driven with two independent triangular waveforms. The mirror thus performs an analog to PWM conversion at the MEMS level, not at the CMOS level. The number and the distribution of grey levels does not depend on the number of binary subframes or bitplanes, resulting in less severe speed requirements for the on-chip electronics.
The exciton decay time depends on the optical environment in which the decay takes place. In the case 4 an organic light-emitting device this environment is determined by the thin film layer structure. The radiative and non-radiative decay channels compete and in this way influence the radiative efficiency and the external quantum efficiency of the device. This paper shows an experimentally verified model to estimate the dependency of the exciton decay lime and the radiative efficiency on the thin film stack.
Whenever we think of a display, we think of a rectangular shape. However, this is not always required. A free-from modular display consists of several independent modules that can he put together as desired. Since the configuration of the display is not a priori known, intelligent drivers are required to let the display work as a whole. The shape is automatically detected and sent to the user interface.
An efficient full-vectorial finite element beam propagation method is presented that uses higher order vector elements to calculate the wide angle propagation of an optical field through inhomogeneous, anisotropic optical materials such as liquid crystals. The full dielectric permittivity tensor is considered in solving Maxwell's equations. The wide applicability of the method is illustrated with different examples: the propagation of a laser beam in a uniaxial medium, the tunability of a directional coupler based on liquid crystals and the near-field diffraction of a plane wave in a structure containing micrometer scale variations in the transverse refractive index, similar to the pixels of a spatial light modulator.
