
Degenerative joint disease is highly prevalent in older cats and can negatively affect mobility, behaviour, and overall welfare, yet objective evidence for the efficacy of dietary joint supplements in this species remains limited. This study evaluated the effects of a multi-ingredient oral joint supplement on activity, behaviour, and physiological parameters in domestic cats using accelerometry and blood-based measures. Sixteen cats were enrolled, with data from 11 cats (control n = 5; treatment n = 6) analysed over a 16-week period. Overall dynamic body acceleration was associated with time and showed a significant interaction between treatment and time (p = 0.001), although no main effect of treatment was detected (p = 0.323). Locomotion showed trends for both treatment (p = 0.082) and the interaction between treatment and time (p = 0.097). Grooming showed a significant interaction between treatment and time (p = 0.018), with higher grooming levels in the treatment group during early winter (weeks 2–8), followed by a decline in both groups. No differences were observed in body weight, haematology or biochemistry. These findings suggest that supplementation may influence behavioural consistency and context-dependent expression, particularly in grooming, rather than producing increases in overall activity. The supplement was well tolerated, highlighting the importance of behaviour-specific and temporal analyses when evaluating interventions in feline joint health.
Dogs have historically been favoured in research efforts focused on optimising human–pet relationships, even though cats are also commonly kept as pets. Research has previously established Australians’ preferences for companion dog characteristics, revealing which characteristics are perceived as ‘ideal’ for dogs performing their modern roles as companions and family members. No similar research has been conducted for cats, despite the value it would bring to informing owner choices, assisting shelters to prepare cats for adoption, and helping breeders optimise their practices. The aim of this study was to characterise the ideal cat in a sample of 570 Australian adults (88.4% women, aged 18–87 years), who identified as willing to adopt a cat. Although physical characteristics were considered important when selecting an ideal cat, behavioural characteristics, particularly those relating to calmness and non-roaming, emerged as key characteristics of the ideal cat. An exploratory factor analysis identified five behavioural subscales: ‘Calm’, ‘Affectionate’, ‘Non-Roaming’, ‘Outgoing’ and ‘Well-Behaved’, with the ‘Non-Roaming’ factor having the highest importance. Furthermore, the ideal cat would be desexed, adopted in person from a shelter, be generally low-maintenance, and engage with their owner daily. These findings can be used by shelters and adoption agencies to highlight the positive attributes of available cats.
Background: The objective of this study was to determine whether an ACTH-induced increase in serum cortisol affects hematological variables and serum serotonin concentration in healthy dogs. Methods: Eight healthy dogs were evaluated using a randomized crossover design. Each dog received either ACTH (5 µg/kg, i.v.) or saline solution during the first experimental period and the alternate treatment after a 15-day interval, so that all dogs underwent both treatments. Blood samples were collected during the first 5 h after treatment. Serum cortisol and serotonin concentrations and hematological variables were determined. Results: ACTH-treated dogs showed higher serum cortisol concentrations than controls (p = 0.0002). ACTH treatment increased white blood cell and absolute neutrophil counts (p < 0.05), whereas the percentage of lymphocytes decreased at 120 min (p < 0.05), with no significant effects on the remaining hematological variables. ACTH treatment did not affect serum serotonin concentrations. Conclusions: This study shows that ACTH-induced increases in cortisol affected selected hematological variables in healthy dogs, including increased white blood cell and absolute neutrophil counts and a reduced percentage of lymphocytes, although all values remained within the reference interval. In contrast, ACTH-induced cortisol increases did not acutely affect serum serotonin concentrations during the first 300 min after treatment.
Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare disorder of sex development characterized by the persistence of Müllerian duct derivatives in genetically and phenotypically male animals. This report describes the clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, surgical management, histopathological findings, and cytogenetic characterization of a 9-year-old intact male Schnauzer dog presented with a 3-day history of progressively worsening vomiting, diarrhea, unilateral testicular enlargement, oliguria, and dysuria. Diagnostic evaluation included abdominal radiography, ultrasonography, exploratory laparotomy, histopathology, and cytogenetic analysis using R-replicative banding after bromodeoxyuridine incorporation. Imaging and surgical exploration revealed cryptorchidism, persistent Müllerian duct derivatives, including uterine horn-like structures, and an abnormal gonadal structure. Histopathological examination confirmed severe seminiferous tubular atrophy, persistence of Müllerian-derived tissues, and a unilateral Sertoli cell tumor. Cytogenetic analysis demonstrated a normal male karyotype (78,XY) without evidence of chromosomal mosaicism or structural abnormalities, supporting the diagnosis of a 78,XY disorder of sex development and excluding major chromosomal defects. This case highlights the importance of integrating clinical evaluation, diagnostic imaging, histopathology, and cytogenetic analysis to identify findings compatible with PMDS and emphasizes that this condition should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cryptorchid male dogs presenting with reproductive tract abnormalities or associated testicular neoplasia.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in older cats, and nutritional management remains the intervention with the strongest clinical evidence. Interest has expanded from conventional control of phosphorus and uremic signs to the gut–kidney axis, in which renal dysfunction may alter the intestinal environment while microbial metabolism generates solutes that accumulate as kidney function declines. This PRISMA-ScR-guided scoping review and critical narrative synthesis evaluates feline evidence on CKD-associated dysbiosis, gut-derived uremic solutes, bile acid metabolism, and microbiome-directed nutrition. The original search covered January 2021 to April 2026, with inclusion of earlier studies and targeted source verification through July 2026. Eligibility was organized into two evidence strata: core feline evidence and contextual evidence. The final revised evidence map comprised 49 unique sources (28 empirical feline sources and 21 contextual sources spanning comparative, methodological, guideline, regulatory, or safety evidence); non-feline evidence was used only for mechanistic, methodological, safety, or translational interpretation and was not pooled with feline clinical outcomes. Cats with CKD have shown lower fecal microbial richness and diversity and higher circulating indoxyl sulfate in small cross-sectional cohorts, but causality remains unproven. Recent work also identified altered secondary bile acids and lower fecal ursodeoxycholic acid; however, Peptacetobacter hiranonis is principally linked to bai-mediated 7α-dehydroxylation, whereas ursodeoxycholic acid formation requires distinct hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase reactions. Complete therapeutic renal diets improve clinical outcomes, but their benefits reflect multiple simultaneous modifications and cannot yet be decomposed into a microbiome-specific effect. Evidence for isolated prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, synbiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and precision nutrition algorithms is preliminary or absent in feline CKD. The field is constrained by small cohorts, confounding, reliance on 16S rRNA sequencing, compositional data, and limited interlaboratory reproducibility. Current clinical practice should therefore prioritize a palatable complete renal diet, adequate energy and protein intake, muscle condition monitoring, hydration, and constipation management, while microbiome-directed products remain adjunctive or investigational.
Rationale: This research explores the connections between shelter and rescue revenues and expenses and live release outcomes, specifically focusing on the implications of a nonprofit having a government contract to provide animal control and welfare services. Methods: Two data sources were used for the project: nonprofit I990s as reported to the Internal Revenue Service (for financial data) and live release data from Shelter Animals Count (to measure shelter outcomes). The project focuses on financing for nonprofit shelters and rescues and 252 organizations from the Shelter Animals Count database, classified as nonprofits with and without government contracts, were used in the analysis. Data on revenue and expenditures were pulled from the nonprofit 990s using the GuideStar website. Results: Two variables—relinquishment rate and diversification of revenue—account for 40% of the variation in live release rates. Organizations with greater diversification of revenue have significantly higher live release rates and those with higher numbers of relinquished animals have lower ones. Conclusions: The study concludes that: a more even distribution of revenue between donations, programs, and government contracts for service is related to better outcomes; it is not so much whether a shelter or rescue has a government contract, but the portion of its revenue provided by the contract that is related to live release rates; and, overall, there are few significant relationships between revenue, expenditures, and outcomes.
Skin diseases are among the most frequently diagnosed conditions in companion animals and have historically been treated empirically with antibiotics, contributing to the emergence and persistence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In recent years, greater awareness of AMR has led to a reduction in antibiotic use in veterinary medicine, particularly in dermatology. To assess AMR trends in skin infections and evaluate the use of diagnostic tools to guide antimicrobial prescriptions, we conducted a retrospective study of medical records from a veterinary hospital in northwestern Italy between 2013 and 2024. A total of 447 antimicrobial susceptibility tests from dogs and cats with clinical signs of skin disease were analyzed. Of these, 391 yielded positive bacterial cultures, and 56 were negative. Most positive samples came from dogs (83.4%), with cats accounting for 16.6%. The most frequently isolated bacterial families were Staphylococcaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, and Pseudomonadaceae. Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid was prescribed in 36.6% of patients, fluoroquinolones in 25.9%, while 17% received only detergent–disinfectant products. Among first-line drugs, ampicillin showed the lowest susceptibility, with resistance exceeding 60%, whereas imipenem (used as an indicator of carbapenemase production but avoided in veterinary medicine) retained high activity, with susceptibility rates of 77.2% in dogs and 90.3% in cats. These findings are clinically relevant, but continuous AMR surveillance remains essential within a One Health framework to limit the spread of resistant bacteria and resistance genes to cohabiting humans.
Phimosis is rarely reported in cats and involves the inability to exteriorize the penis through an absent or abnormally narrowed preputial orifice. This case report describes the clinical presentation, surgical management, and outcome of two male domestic shorthair kittens with suspected congenital type II phimosis. Both cats presented with recurrent stranguria and dysuria, preputial swelling, urine pooling or dribbling, a markedly stenotic preputial orifice, and penile–preputial adhesions. In Case 1, cystic struvite urolithiasis was also identified; treatment included cystotomy and ventrally performed modified preputial urethrostomy because of extensive adhesions, penile hypoplasia, and limited penile mobility. In Case 2, adhesions were limited to the distal penis and were released, allowing circumferential preputioplasty. No postoperative complications occurred. Clinical signs resolved, and normal urination was recorded during available follow-up, which was 12 months in Case 1 and 2 months in Case 2. The congenital origin was suspected based on early onset of clinical signs but could not be definitively confirmed. These cases suggest that selected feline type II phimosis cases can be managed successfully by tailoring surgery to anatomical abnormalities, using ventral-modified preputial urethrostomy when adhesions and penile hypoplasia restrict mobilization, or circumferential preputioplasty when adhesions are limited distally.
Background: Chiari-like malformation (CM) and syringomyelia (SM) are common neurological disorders in Pomeranian dogs. The familial aggregation of these disorders has not been thoroughly characterised in this breed. Methods: A cohort of 999 Pomeranians examined with MRI for CM/SM was retrospectively reviewed. Siblings within litters were identified and compared, and the familial aggregation between offspring and parents screened for these conditions was investigated. Results: The mean central canal dilation (CCD) increased statistically significantly with the age of the dog at the time of the MRI scan. Forty-three per cent of all the dogs were free of CM, with 57% had CM. SM was detected in 31% of all the dogs, while 69% were not affected. Only 37% of all the dogs were free of both conditions. SM was observed in 6% of all the dogs without being affected by CM. Thirty-nine litters were identified in which two or more siblings were scanned. Siblings within the same litter had comparable scans in almost all the cases. Although pups from affected parents have a higher risk of SM, and pups bred from unaffected parents have a lower incidence of SM, the statistical significance could only be demonstrated for the >3 years of age category of SM in offspring, compared with the presence of SM in the mother. It could not be demonstrated for CM. Conclusions: Both CM and SM are frequently observed in this breed, and SM tends to progress over time. Siblings often show comparable findings. The screening results obtained from mothers aged >3 years indicated that SM-affected mothers are more likely to have affected offspring. CM/SM are most likely heritable traits in this breed, and to reduce the frequency of affected pups, breeders are encouraged to screen their breeding stock and use only unaffected parents.
Skin wounds in dogs and cats are frequently managed by second-intention healing, yet comparative evidence on topical treatments in these species remains limited. This study investigated wound-healing dynamics in dogs and cats using a standardized experimental model that enabled direct interspecies and within-animal comparison of treatment responses during secondary-intention healing. Standardized full-thickness cutaneous wounds were created on the dorsolateral trunk, with multiple wounds per animal randomly assigned to different treatments, including Manuka honey, Dermapliq, and untreated controls. Healing was evaluated using a multimodal approach, including clinical endpoints, planimetric analysis of epithelialization, contraction and total healing, ultrasonographic assessment, and blinded histopathology. Planimetry-derived total wound healing, the primary endpoint, did not differ significantly among treatments, while treatment-associated differences were identified in selected secondary endpoints. Dermapliq-treated wounds reached complete epithelial coverage earlier and showed smaller ultrasonographic wound areas than untreated controls, whereas Manuka honey was associated with faster complete granulation coverage but greater exudate quantity. Interspecies differences were also identified, with cats generally exhibiting slower progression to key healing endpoints than dogs under identical experimental conditions. These findings suggest species-specific healing responses and phase-dependent treatment-associated differences during secondary-intention wound healing in a controlled experimental model. However, they should not be interpreted as evidence of broad treatment superiority. Further studies in naturally occurring, larger, contaminated, infected, or chronic wounds are required before direct clinical extrapolation.
Periodontal disease is one of the most common oral conditions in dogs. The oral microbiome plays a key role in maintaining oral health, yet the normal canine oral microbiota and the effects of dental cleaning remain understudied. This study investigated changes in the oral microbiota of healthy dogs after routine tartar removal. Fourteen healthy adult Beagles underwent dental cleaning under general anesthesia. Oral microbiota was sampled using swabs at D-03 (baseline), D0 (after tartar removal), D3, D7, D14, and D28. Microbiota composition was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing (V4 region). Alpha diversity analysis showed that tartar removal was associated with a significant decrease in richness (Kruskal–Wallis test, p < 0.001) but not with diversity (Shannon). Beta diversity analysis revealed significant differences (PERMANOVA; p < 0.05) across all sampling times compared with baseline. Dental tartar removal temporarily reduced several anaerobic taxa and increased aerotolerant bacteria, with partial recovery toward baseline within two weeks, indicating resilience of the oral microbiota. Porphyromonas dominated the oral microbiota but decreased following dental cleaning with concomitant increases in other bacterial species, notably Neisseria, Moraxella, and Pasteurella. These findings suggest that the canine oral microbiota demonstrates considerable resilience following mechanical disruption by dental cleaning. Future studies should focus on the importance of this microbial restructuring in the pathogenesis and clinical management of canine periodontitis and may inform the development of microbiota-targeted preventive or therapeutic strategies in veterinary dentistry.
French Bulldogs are one of the most popular companion dog breeds worldwide, yet breed-specific behavioral data remain limited. This study aimed to characterize the behavioral profile of French Bulldogs in Italy using the Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) and to explore the relationships among sex, neuter status, coat color, and behavioral traits. An online survey was completed by 206 owners of French Bulldogs aged one year or older residing in Italy. Behavioral items were analyzed using ordinal logistic regression with sex, neuter status, and coat color as simultaneous predictors. French Bulldogs showed low aggression and fear-related behaviors, high attachment and attention-seeking tendencies, and moderate excitability and trainability. Sex was the most consistently associated predictor (17 items), with females showing lower odds for sexually dimorphic, fear-related, excitability, and separation-related behaviors. Neuter status showed limited, behavior-specific associations (4 items) involving leash-pulling, separation-related behaviors, and play-related excitability. Coat color was associated with ten behavioral items, including coprophagia, food stealing, hyperactivity, and submissive urination. Most pseudo-R2 values were low (range: 0.009–0.059), reflecting the multifactorial nature of canine behavior. These findings offer a preliminary behavioral characterization of French Bulldogs in Italy and suggest that sex, neuter status, and coat color represent relevant sources of within-breed variation, warranting further research.
Dog behavior problems are a common source of stress for owners, yet the psychological mechanisms underlying this distress remain poorly understood. This cross-sectional study online survey examines relationships among dog behavioral characteristics, caregiver guilt, burden, psychological outcomes, social context, veterinary communication quality, and decision-making regarding rehoming and euthanasia. Among 565 participants, 33% met criteria for probable anxiety, 20% for probable depression, and 78% for elevated caregiver burden; 53% reported feeling alone, and 40% reported feeling socially isolated. Dog behavior burden was associated with caregiver guilt, caregiver burden, and decision-making related to euthanasia and rehoming, but not with depression or life satisfaction. In contrast, caregiver guilt was consistently associated with higher anxiety, higher depression, greater caregiver burden, and lower life satisfaction. Informal and self-guided resources were widely used but perceived as less effective, and although veterinarians were commonly consulted, they were rated as less helpful than board-certified veterinary behaviorists, trainers, or prescribed medications. Findings suggest that caregiver distress may be driven less by the objective severity of behavior problems and more by how these experiences are interpreted, evaluated, and socially reinforced, highlighting the importance of addressing caregiver experiences alongside canine behavior.
Background: Nutrition is a key determinant of skin barrier function and coat quality in cats, but controlled studies comparing commercial diets are limited. Methods: Eighteen healthy adult cats (3.44 ± 0.69 years) were randomly assigned to receive either a standard commercial chicken-based diet (ORI, Instinct Petfood, Visalia, CA, USA, n = 9) or a nutrient-enriched formula designed for skin and coat health (ULT, Instinct Petfood, Little Falls, MN, USA, n = 9) for 12 weeks. Body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) were recorded weekly. Visual coat scoring, quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA), and skin biophysical parameters (hydration, sebum, transepidermal water loss) were assessed on days 0, 21, 42, 63 and 84. Results: Both diets maintained stable BW and BCS. Visual scoring showed skin and hair remained within the normal healthy ranges in both groups throughout the study. QDA revealed significant improvements in coat glossiness, softness, and overall scores over time in both diet groups (p < 0.05). Back hydration increased over time, and in the ORI group, values at days 42, 63, and 84 were higher than baseline (44.96, 43.10, and 41.26 vs. 33.85; p < 0.05). Ear hydration showed a significant time × group interaction (p < 0.05). In the ULT group, ear hydration was higher at days 21, 42, 63, and 84 than at baseline (24.17, 35.21, 28.69, and 34.19 vs. 17.87; p < 0.05). Ear TEWL also showed a significant time × group interaction (p < 0.05) and displayed a biphasic pattern in the ULT group, with values at days 63 and 84 higher than at day 42 (15.51 and 14.48 vs. 11.77 g/m2/h; p < 0.05). Compared with the ORI group, the ULT group showed a smaller change in ear TEWL from baseline at day 42 (−2.54 vs. 2.98 g/m2/h; p < 0.05) and a greater increase in ear hydration from baseline at day 84 (16.32 vs. 9.31; p < 0.05). Conclusions: These findings indicate that both diets supported healthy skin and coat conditions in cats, while the nutrient-enriched formula may provide additional benefits for skin hydration.
Postbiotics are an emerging ingredient class which have promising potential to support canine gut function by delivering beneficial microbial compounds directly to the gut. We tested a canine immune health postbiotic (CIHP) in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of twenty colony-housed dogs (ten per group) selected for having consistently loose stools but with no diagnosed gastrointestinal disease. After a 5-day wash-in and 5-day baseline, dogs received 12 mg/kg body weight per day of CIHP or a placebo for 28 days mixed with their normal dry diet. The primary outcome was stool consistency (Waltham fecal score), measured on Days 0, 14, and 28; secondary outcomes included fecal gut-health biomarkers and fecal microbiome composition from 16S rRNA sequencing, measured on Days 0 and 28. CIHP improved stool quality (p-value = 0.03), while placebo did not (p-value = 0.5), and CIHP showed a trend toward increasing the odds of individual dogs showing improved fecal scores by Day 28 compared to placebo (p-value = 0.07). Microbiome profiling revealed broader community remodeling with CIHP than the placebo (16 taxa significantly shifted with CIHP vs. 1 with the placebo), consistent with stool quality being impacted by both gastrointestinal and gut microbiome functions. Fecal biomarkers that reflect gut health (pH, dry matter, short-chain fatty acids, dysbiosis index, calprotectin) were within reference ranges at baseline and remained stable in both groups, indicating benefits occurred within a normal physiological window. Together, these findings show that CIHP can improve stool consistency while reshaping the gut microbiome in otherwise healthy dogs prone to loose stools. Future studies in home-environment dogs across breeds, ages, and living conditions are needed to generalize these findings to the broader canine population.
Cats are among the most popular pets globa lly, yet little is known about how the home environment influences their behaviour. Most studies have focused on cats in shelters or research facilities, potentially limiting applicability to pet cats. This study combined behavioural data from cats in three housing conditions: indoor pet (n = 10), free-roaming pet (n = 18), and research (n = 8), collected in summer and winter. Eight behaviours were classified from collar-mounted accelerometer data using a validated machine learning model and analysed using generalised linear mixed models. Free-roaming pet cats were more active in summer than winter (3.9 ± 0.39% vs. 2.7 ± 0.33%; p < 0.001) and more active than both research (2.0 ± 0.36%; p = 0.004) and indoor pet cats (2.0 ± 0.36%; p < 0.001) in summer. Research cats spent more time lying (52.9 ± 2.03% vs. 36.9 ± 2.89%; p = 0.009) and eating (7.8 ± 0.41% vs. 2.4 ± 0.39%; p = 0.003) in winter than summer, whereas no seasonal differences in these behaviours were observed for pet cats. A bimodal daily activity pattern, with peaks around sunrise and sunset, was observed across housing conditions and seasons. These findings demonstrate that both housing and seasonal conditions influence domestic cat behaviour and should be considered when interpreting behavioural studies.
Tooth structure anomalies, though not frequently described, can be observed in the external appearance not only of humans but also of dogs. The emergence of an oversized set of teeth is not solely an esthetic and health problem, but often also leads to behavioral issues. In the commonly available medical literature, there are many cases describing the occurrence and treatment of double teeth, both in the incisors and in the cheek teeth. In this article, the authors describe a clinical case of a one-year-old female Golden Retriever dog diagnosed with a double tooth in her permanent dentition. The complex morphology of the affected tooth posed a considerable diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Surgical separation of the tooth was performed, requiring an individualized treatment approach and the adaptation of protocols derived primarily from human dentistry. This case highlights the diagnostic and clinical decision-making difficulties associated with such anomalies. It also emphasizes the importance of tailored therapeutic strategies for managing rare dental developmental abnormalities in dogs. The teeth were successfully surgically separated, and thus the present report contributes to the limited body of literature on double teeth in veterinary patients and provides practical insight into their management. This description of the first case of this type in veterinary dentistry aims to encourage readers to explore the topic of double teeth and demonstrates a non-standard way of thinking and dealing with such a tooth. The presented case is unique from both a diagnostic and therapeutic perspective. Previous publications have focused on these abnormalities as separate entities, failing to consider their simultaneous occurrence within a single tooth. The therapeutic approach employed also deserves particular attention. The most commonly recommended approach involves extraction of the affected teeth; however, in this case, an attempt was made to separate and preserve them, representing a novel clinical approach.
The present study is dedicated to exploring key factors impacting US pet owners’ preferences for brand, price, country of origin, and health and nutrition claims as important extrinsic and credence attributes. Pet engagement and subjective and objective knowledge, as well as varying forms of pet humanisation behaviour, were thought to be suitable factors. The study is of an explorative and quantitative nature, rooted in an online consumer survey, descriptive statistics, and partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). To strengthen the PLS-SEM model, relative preference shares derived from a best–worst analysis were integrated into the model. The results with the strongest effect sizes indicate that US pet owners’ objective knowledge is positively associated with pet non-humanisation behaviour, those who actively engage with their pet are positively associated with loving humanisation behaviour, and that health and nutritional claims on pet food are less important for those reporting non-humanisation behaviours. The analysis between the varying types of pet humanisation behaviours and the best–worst-derived relative preferences for extrinsic and credence attributes provides a diverse picture. Together, the results suggest that pet engagement and both subjective and objective knowledge are associated with pet humanisation behaviour, which are differentially linked to the importance of pet food product attributes. Best practice recommendations for marketers in the pet food industry are provided.
Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders in which protein loss occurs through the gastrointestinal tract. One of the underlying causes is chronic inflammatory enteropathy (CIE). Conventional therapies for CIE often include diet, immunosuppressives, anti-microbials, probiotics, and, recently, fecal microbial transplantation (FMT). This case report highlights the use of lyophilized material-based FMT through oral capsules and enema in a dog with PLE and concurrent protein-losing nephropathy (PLN). The patient initially had a significantly increased dysbiosis index (DI) and required repeated FMT treatments, resulting in a positive clinical response through improvement in body weight, serum albumin concentrations, fecal scores, and normalization of the DI over time. To maintain clinical responses, FMT had to be performed monthly. Approximately 1 year after starting FMT therapy, the patient then developed an episode of acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS) associated with netF-gene-encoding Clostridium perfringens strains, after which the DI became abnormal again. The patient responded clinically well to monthly FMT treatments again, but it took several months for normalization of the DI after the AHDS episode. In summary, this case report highlights the continued use of adjunct lyophilized FMT in a dog with PLE resulting in improved clinical control over time.
Congenital external auditory canal atresia (EACA) is a rare developmental anomaly in dogs with limited information to guide management. This report describes the clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, surgical technique, and long-term outcome in two young dogs with unilateral congenital EACA. An 8-month-old Caucasian Shepherd and a 9-month-old Maltese presented with left-sided otalgia and absence of the external canal opening. Computed tomography identified segmental atresia of the vertical canal with intraluminal soft-tissue attenuating material and mild otitis externa and media in both dogs. Cytology and culture of canal contents were unremarkable, supporting a congenital, non-infectious origin. Both dogs underwent a canal-preserving vertical canal-to-external acoustic meatus anastomosis using a pull-through approach. Minor postoperative complications (partial wound dehiscence, mild canal stenosis) were successfully managed. At the 5-year and 1.5-year follow-up, respectively, both dogs remained free of clinical signs, with preserved hearing, supporting this procedure as a functional, cosmetically acceptable option in carefully selected dogs.
