This study presents the validation of the Workplace Civility Scale (WCS; Osatuke, Moore, Ward, Dyrenforth, & Belton, 2009) for European Portuguese samples. It was applied to a sample of 1375 Portuguese workers. The current study gives empirical support to the research of workplace civility. The 8-item pool was proposed to measure the workplace civility, the concept and practice of courtesy, respect and consideration expressed between people at work (coworkers and supervisors; Osatuke et al., 2009).A Confirmatory Factor Analysis was performed to evaluate the factor structure and model fit, in terms of construct validity.WCS presents good reliability and convergent validity and can contribute to enhance empirical research of civil behaviour at work. Finally, implications of workplace civility are discussed.
Studies on the perpetrator of sexual violence against children and adolescents are incipient in Brazil.Their life trajectory constitutes a complex topic and their parental aspects are treated with caution in the literature, despite evidence indicating that perpetrators of violence are more likely to be the father or stepfather of the victim. Thus, this research aimed to biosociodemographically characterize parents who committed sexual violence and describe the aggression perpetrated. This was an empirical-documentary, descriptive-exploratory study, with a quantitative approach to the data.Developed in seven municipalities in the State of Pará, it involved the processes of 283 sentenced prisoner parents.A biopsychosocial characterization form was used as an instrument. The collection allowed the construction of a database analyzed using descriptive and cluster statistics. In the results, the biosociodemographic profile pointed to author parents who were mostly black/brown, with an average of 40 years old, two children, with a spouse and occupation.Kinship ties appeared in the highest proportion of stepfather, father and uncle, respectively. The characteristics of aggression, use of force or severe coercion appeared in a proportion of 65.02% and the acts of rubbing against the victim and vaginal sex were the most frequent. The analyzes made it possible to scrutinize aspects of the characterization of this population for more effective future interventions.
Background: Risk perception is a topic of interest in various scientific disciplines due to its vital role in accident management, intervention, and prevention. Objectives: This study aimed to examine how individual factors such as safety self-efficacy, internal locus of control, mental resilience, neuroticism, and sensation seeking influence risk perception (RP), as well as investigate the mediating role of physical safety climate in this relationship.Method: This quantitative study utilized a sample of 216 Portuguese workers of both sexes, with a mean age of 34.30 years (SD = 9.45).Results: The results of multiple regression analysis showed that the examined predictor variables explained approximately 27.1% of the variance in RP, with self-efficacy and internal locus of control being the only statistically significant predictors.Additionally, the mediation analysis revealed a partial mediating effect of physical safety climate on the relationship between self-efficacy and risk perception. Conclusions: Developing safe behaviors that fit the tasks performed is essential, with investment in prevention being the most effective strategy in reducing workplace accidents.
The utilization of social media has become increasingly prevalent across various generations, serving as a platform for individuals to exhibit personal content that may influence other users. However, there is limited understanding of the impact that the number of followers on social media platforms can have on the relationship between life satisfaction and users' self-esteem.Objective: The primary aim of this research is to examine the mediating effect of the number of followers on the relationship between life satisfaction and self-esteem among Instagram users.Method: This study included an original sample of 298 participants, as well as two simulated samples of 2980 and 29800 subjects, all of whom were users of the social media platform Instagram and aged between 18 and 40 years. The research utilized three measurement instruments: a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Results: The findings revealed that the number of followers serves as a significant mediator in the relationship between life satisfaction and self-esteem across all applied models.Additionally, a positive and significant relationship was observed among all these variables in the three study samples. Conclusion: The number of followers on social media platforms has been shown to impact the self-esteem of users and contribute to a better understanding of the effect of life satisfaction on participants' self-esteem levels. However, caution is needed regarding the use and content shared, as exposure on social media can have positive and negative impacts on users and influence them. Therefore, the results of this study may contribute to the development of awareness programs about the use of social media, as well as increasing the digital literacy of its users.
The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is a self-report scale that aims to provide information about psychopathology, personality, and the psychosocial environment of a person, all of which are important constructs for clinical decision-making and diagnostic processes. At the structural and psychometric level, it is regarded as an improvement in relation to other personality assessment inventories (e.g., MMPI-2 and MCMI-III).Since its publication, the PAI has gathered international recognition, and is now considered a useful instrument in clinical, forensic and research contexts. The present study aims to review and summarize the PAI's development, administration, scoring, and interpretation, as well as to discuss its factorial structure and other psychometric properties in different contexts. The adaptation of PAI across cultures, as well as other alternative versions (e.g., PAI-SF, PAS, PAI-A) are also presented and summarized, and their psychometric properties are analyzed. The Portuguese adaptation and validation of PAI would significantly contribute to the progress of the psychological assessment field in Portugal.
