What kind of sources do students in the second year of upper secondary school (vg2) use when writing academic articles, and to what extent do they evaluate the sources they use in the final versions of their texts? In the Norwegian language arts subject, academic articles have become an important genre at all levels in the college preparatory programs in upper secondary school. This article presents a study of the first drafts and the final texts in the writing of academic articles in two second-year, upper secondary school classes. The two classes are from different parts of the country, and the texts are part of a text exchange project where the students are to provide anonymous peer feedback to the students at the other school. While 82 per cent of the texts have at least one citation in the running text, 58 per cent of the texts lack explicit evaluations of the sources. Only about a quarter of the texts have more advanced source evaluations where different sources are compared with each other, which indicates that this is a challenging area for students. The students for the most part use digital sources, with articles from the online version of the Great Norwegian Encyclopedia dominating. The analysis shows that in their feedback, the students focus primarily on the technical aspects of source use, such as the formatting of citations and reference lists, while other source-critical aspects are less frequently commented upon.
English is the world’s lingua franca, and it is essential for children growing up in Norway to develop oral proficiency in English as an additional language (L2). The importance of oral skills is emphasized in the English curriculum, but there is limited empirical knowledge of how different aspects of L2 oral proficiency are realized in student interactions. The aim of this study is therefore to explore L2 English oral proficiency by analyzing spoken interactions among students in grades 6 and 10, using Norway as a case in point. Data was collected by video-recording small-group spoken interactions elicited by an English speaking test. In total, 21 learners from 4 schools participated: 12 6th-graders in 4 tests and 9 10th-graders in 3 tests. Data was analyzed using an abductive approach and the descriptors of oral proficiency in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (levels A1–C2). The majority performed the same or better for linguistic competence compared to strategic and sociolinguistic competence, where strategic competence was the least shown competence. Due to contextual ambiguity, sociolinguistic competence was the most challenging aspect to assess. In addition, there were considerable intra-individual differences for different aspects of oral proficiency. The study provides insight into how different aspects of oral proficiency are demonstrated in learner interactions, and highlights challenges related to teaching and assessment. Important implications include the need for increased awareness in instruction and the development of clear criteria for what and how to assess L2 English oral proficiency to achieve equity.
Despite the global expansion of extended education, a notable lack of didactic theorization and research remains regarding its pedagogical logic and instruc-tional practices. This study aims to develop a theoretical framework by ana-lyzing school-age educare (SAEC) staff's understanding of didactics in rela-tion to the setting's pedagogical mandate. Despite increased regulation and curriculum requirements, models that consider the specific character of SAEC remain lacking. The empirical basis consists of a survey of 352 practitioners, analyzed through thematic content analysis. Findings indicate medium-level knowledge that is often practiced but implicitly articulated. Five themes emerge: pupil-centered teaching, structured instruction, everyday learning, relational approach, and conceptual complexity. Didactics appears as a reflec-tive framework rather than a set of methods, with classical questions (what, how, why) guiding planning and analysis. Informal, situational, and relational learning is emphasized, creating tensions between goal orientation and volun-tary participation. The study concludes that leisure-time didactics expand tra-ditional frameworks by integrating structure and flexibility. Implications high-light the need for collegial forums and context-sensitive frameworks. Future research should include Nordic and international comparisons to develop sus-tainable models for teaching in extended education.
Denne produksjonen varierte imidlertid betydelig.
