Abstract The objective of this study is to evaluate the technical feasibility of employing digital manufacturing techniques to support the reproduction of lightweight precast reinforced cement mortar components, conceptualized by the architect João Filgueiras Lima (1932 - 2014), utilized in the construction of the Centro de Atenção Integral à Criança e ao Adolescente (CAICs) buildings. The rationale behind this subject matter is twofold: first, its propositional character in safeguarding this contemporary architectural and technological heritage; and second, its contribution to the maintenance of hundreds of CAICs still in use. The methodological approach began with the parametric modeling of the roof slab, foundation chalice and drainage channel grate components, progressed to the physical model at a reduced scale, and culminated in the fabrication of digital formworks using fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing, CNC machining and vacuum thermoforming, followed by the production of full-scale reinforced cement mortar components. The successful fabrication and demolding of full-scale prototypes demonstrated the possibility of transferring the digitally reconstructed geometries to physical production. However, the absence of structural, mechanical, hydraulic and durability tests limits the assessment of component performance under actual service conditions.
Abstract Public works management in regions characterized by high logistical complexity, such as the Amazon, poses significant challenges to maintaining control over the iron triangle (cost, schedule, and scope). This study evaluates the physical and financial performance of 13 school construction projects in the State of Amazonas and investigates whether the government's digital platform possesses the functional maturity required to mitigate these disruptions. The methodology comprised the mathematical quantification of project overruns, statistical modeling of logistical influences, and the application of a validated checklist to assess the compliance of the Project Management Information System (PMIS). The results revealed chronic project underperformance, with average cost overruns of 28.09% and schedule overruns of 142%. The analysis challenged the assumption that territorial barriers constitute the primary driver of project failures, identifying deficiencies in the basic design and incompatibilities with site conditions as the actual root causes. Evaluation of the digital system demonstrated high compliance with Cost (85.7%) and Schedule (85.7%) management requirements but no compliance (0%) with Quality management parameters. It is concluded that the governmental software operates from a predominantly financial and fragmented perspective, limiting the identification of technical failures and the generation of lessons learned for future public procurement processes.
Abstract The modulus of elasticity is a fundamental parameter in the structural design of timber elements, as it directly controls displacement response and serviceability performance. The methodology established by NBR 7190-3:2022 and by other international standards for determining this property is based on static bending tests performed on small clear prismatic specimens. However, these standards do not explicitly define which longitudinal face of the specimen should be subjected to loading, which may introduce an additional source of variability in the measured results. Considering the anisotropic behavior and inherent heterogeneity of wood, this study evaluated the existence of significant variations in the modulus of elasticity obtained from the four longitudinal faces of specimens from twelve tropical hardwood species. Statistical analyses based on paired t-tests at a 95% confidence level confirmed significant differences, demonstrating that the loading face influences the estimated stiffness. The least squares method was applied to quantify the variability between the maximum and minimum modulus values obtained for each specimen. An average variation of approximately 4% was observed among the different loading face configurations. Based on these findings, a correction coefficient (γ = 0.96) is proposed to adjust modulus of elasticity values derived from bending tests, enhancing measurement representativeness and reliability for structural applications.
