1‘My Street’, ‘the Street’, and ‘the Streets’: Belonging, Exclusion, and Community in 1970s and 1980s Bradford
    Hannah Parkes

This article foregrounds the street as a richly layered yet underutilised site for social and cultural historical analysis. Centring the voices and memories of Bradfordians, it draws on oral histories to illuminate the complex entanglements of community, belonging, and exclusion in 1970s and 1980s Bradford. Organised around three spatial framings - 'my street', 'the street', and 'the streets' - it examines how everyday practices, gendered and racialised boundaries, and political mobilisation were navigated through and produced by the street. By bridging spatial theory with lived experience, the article conceptualises the street as both an event, continually shaped through everyday social relations, and eventful, actively generating new forms of solidarity, identity, and resistance. In doing so, it challenges dominant narratives of working-class decline and repositions the street as a vital scale for understanding the textures and meanings of everyday urban life.

2'The Leeches of the Villages': the Gazette for Peasants Unirea Poporului and the Greek-Catholic Church's Role in Promoting Antisemitism in Interwar Romania, 1919-40
    Marian Patru

The study investigates the contribution of the Greek Catholic Church in Romania to the promotion of antisemitism in the interwar period. For this aim, the content of the Greek Catholic Church's gazette for peasants Unirea Poporului and the discursive techniques used by it to maximise the impact of its antisemitic message are analysed. Unirea Poporului constructed an image of the Jew and Jewishness by combining Christian theological antisemitism, folk culture, conspiracy theories, or interpretations of everyday events to highlight the radical otherness - religious, moral, racial, etc. - of the Jews and their threat to Romanians.

3The Cinnamon Isle - Sri Lanka As a Utopia in the Travel Accounts of 19Th-Century British Colonialists
    Saara Koikkalainen

19th-century European colonial expansion generated a genre of texts by explorers, travellers, and administrators. This article focuses on books on the island of Sri Lanka by British colonialists in the 1820s to 1850s. They contributed to the creation of a discourse of utopia of progress through two themes: transforming the island and transforming the population. The article analyses how these themes are expressed in the texts, how they define the colonial Other and imagine a future for the colony as a utopia; an England with a better climate and ideal surroundings for Europeans to start life afresh.

4British Belongings, Excess Baggage, and Trained Killers: Dogs in Wartime Hong Kong, 1941-45
    Catherine S. Chan, Brian Edgar

War thoroughly transformed Hong Kong from a modernising city into a problematic site marked by disease, hunger, panic, and terror. Deviating from existing foci on the impacts of war on human societies, this study explores canine experiences during the occupation. It argues that when human-devised systems and practises collapsed, so did pre-existing cultural patterns of human-canine relations: furry companions were put down, prized pedigrees were abandoned in the face of evacuation, camp dogs became eyesores, Allied military dogs were recruited to work for the Japanese forces, and stray dogs - once outliers - roamed, freer than ever, in Hong Kong's hillsides. Analysing the nuanced ways Hong Kong's canine population experienced the atrocities, this study not only sheds light on the impacts of wartime developments on non-human animals but also demonstrates the impacts of the colonial constructs of 'race' and 'class' on the social lives of dogs both in times of war and peace.

5Seeking the Third Space: Orhan Kemal’s Social Realism in Cold War Turkey
    Cimen Gunay-Erkol

This article challenges polarised Cold War literary historiography by positioning Orhan Kemal, the second most translated writer of Turkey after the Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk, as a pivotal agent. Utilising his 'Third Space' of 'Enlightened realism', I argue that Orhan Kemal's oeuvre functions as a vernacular archive of the subaltern experience, bypassing the rigid Cold War binaries. Through an analysis of his depiction of urban-rural proletarianisation, this study reveals how Orhan Kemal's work navigated state-mandated anti-communism in Turkey to document the plight of the working classes. Ultimately, Orhan Kemal's non-aligned humanism provides a crucial bottom-up history of the Turkish Cold War.
