1Generative Artificial Intelligence in Chemical Engineering Education: from Intelligent Tutoring to Human-Ai Collaborative Engineering Learning
    Xin He, Xingdong Qiu

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly used in chemical engineering education, yet understanding of how individual applications connect with curriculum design and engineering competency development remains fragmented. This review examines these connections through structured literature identification and thematic synthesis. A Web of Science Core Collection search conducted in August 2026, supplemented by reference-list checking, informed an educational evidence base of 54 publications, comprising 24 core chemical-engineering or closely discipline-related publications and 30 supporting publications from related educational contexts. We synthesize the literature through three complementary roles: AI as an Intelligent Tutor, AI as a Learning Partner, and AI as Educational Infrastructure. These roles connect conversational support, collaborative problem solving, and integrated learning environments with different instructional requirements and learner competencies. We develop a human-centered framework linking these roles to foundational AI literacy, integration within disciplinary courses, and authentic engineering practice. Reported benefits include greater engagement, collaboration, and opportunities for personalized support, but their realization depends on pedagogical design, output verification, and learners’ critical engagement. The evidence remains uneven and largely short-term, while unreliable outputs, cognitive dependence, assessment validity, and institutional constraints limit broader conclusions. We outline future priorities for trustworthy educational AI, pedagogical development, and institutional support for responsible GenAI integration in chemical engineering education. The proposed framework offers educators a conceptual basis for aligning AI use with learning objectives while preserving first-principles reasoning, engineering judgment, and human responsibility.

2An Operator-Centered Framework for Conceptual Understanding of Transport Equations
Giovanni Di Bono,Alessandro Quintino, Ferdinando Salata,Massimo Corcione

Transport phenomena are a cornerstone of engineering education, yet students often struggle to connect the mathematical structure of governing equations with their underlying physical meaning. This work proposes an operator-centered pedagogical framework aimed at improving conceptual understanding of transport equations. Rather than presenting governing equations as the outcome of formal mathematical derivations, the approach constructs and interprets them through the physical meaning of differential operators (gradient, divergence, and Laplacian), viewed as descriptors of local inhomogeneity, flux imbalance, and diffusion within continuous fields. Within this framework, mass, momentum and energy transport are presented through a unified interpretation that highlights their common structure and underlying physical principles. The approach was implemented through instructional seminars involving 72 engineering students who had previously completed standard transport courses. Learning outcomes were evaluated through a conceptual pre-test/post-test assessment. The percentage of correct responses increased from 27% to 79%, indicating a substantial improvement in students’ ability to interpret differential operators and transport terms. These results were also supported by positive student feedback collected through a post-session questionnaire. The findings suggest that the proposed framework can effectively complement traditional instruction by bridging the gap between mathematical formalism and physical intuition.

3Cyberchemical Engineering: A Novel Curriculum for Industry 4.0 Readiness
    Seyed Abdollah Shojaei

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is fundamentally reconfiguring chemical operations through cyber-physical integration and AI-enabled systems, necessitating transformative changes in engineering education. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for developing "Cyberchemical Engineering" competencies required for Industry 4.0 readiness. Through analysis of documented deployments from global industry leaders, seven core operational transformations reshaping professional practice are identified. A tripartite competency architecture is proposed, integrating: (1) Core Process Competencies extended to dynamic, data-rich contexts; (2) Digital & Data-Driven Capabilities encompassing IIoT, machine learning, and cybersecurity; and (3) Transversal Competencies including systems thinking and ethical reasoning. Based on this architecture, a vertically integrated four-year curriculum is designed to systematically interleave foundational engineering principles with computational modeling and project-based learning. The framework explicitly maps industry challenges to pedagogical strategies, competency domains, and measurable learning outcomes aligned with ABET/EUR-ACE accreditation standards. By anchoring curriculum design in verified industrial practice, this work provides engineering educators with an evidence-based blueprint for preparing graduates capable of leading responsible digital transformation in complex, safety-critical process environments.

4Contextualizing Project Management Education for Chemical Engineering MSc Students: Course Design and Quasi-Experimental Student Evaluation
Roland Nagy,Ditta Adrienn Gerbovits, András Zoltán Proity

Chemical engineers increasingly operate in complex industrial environments where technical decisions are inseparable from economic, organisational, safety, regulatory and sustainability constraints. Although project management is widely recognised as an important transferable competence, generic project management courses often do not sufficiently reflect the specific context of chemical and process engineering projects. This paper presents the design and an initial student evaluation of a practice-oriented, engineering-contextualised project management course developed for MSc students in chemical engineering. The pedagogical intervention connected standard project management concepts with chemical engineering practice through five structured assignments: lifecycle identification, scheduling and critical path analysis, stakeholder and responsibility mapping, risk analysis including failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), and project monitoring and control. To provide an initial evaluation of the intervention, survey responses from students who completed a former generic project management course (n = 10) were compared with responses from students who completed the new engineering-contextualised course (n = 10). The questionnaire measured self-reported perceptions of course usefulness, disciplinary relevance and perceived project management competence using a five-point Likert scale. Because the study involved two small, non-randomised historical cohorts and relied on self-reported perceptions rather than objective performance measures, the findings should be interpreted as preliminary educational evidence rather than as causal evidence of learning effectiveness. The contextualised cohort reported higher scores across all common scales. Mean overall scores increased from 1.97 ± 0.74–4.28 ± 0.42, with statistically significant differences identified using Mann–Whitney U tests. The largest differences were observed for disciplinary relevance and general usefulness, whereas the increase in self-assessed project management competence was more moderate. Qualitative comments indicated that students particularly valued realistic industrial examples, engineering-oriented explanations and the connection between theory and practice. The results suggest that embedding project management education within chemical engineering contexts may improve students' perceived relevance and usefulness of the subject. The study therefore provides an adaptable course model and preliminary student-based evidence supporting further development and evaluation of contextualised project management education in MSc-level chemical engineering curricula.

5From Graphical Design to Digital Learning: One Hundred Years of the McCabe-Thiele Method
Crisleine P. Draszewski, Flávio D. Mayer

This article commemorates one hundred years of the McCabe-Thiele method by examining its origins, assumptions and subsequent trajectory, and by asking what function it still performs. Physical copies of the principal textbooks, monographs and handbooks published since 1922 were examined to establish how successive authors weighted the method against the enthalpy-concentration construction: balanced treatment of the two persisted for four decades beyond the last of the classical methods and ended in the late 1980s, earliest in works addressed to practice rather than to instruction. The tools now available to a student are compared by level of rigor and by barrier to access, from browser-based calculators to rate-based simulation, and are shown to trade transparency for computational power. What no higher level supplies is diagnosis: a converged simulation returns a valid result for a design operating close to its pinch or with a mislocated feed and reports neither, whereas both are evident on the diagram. On this reading the method persists not as a design procedure, which it ceased to be, but as the representation against which computed output is interpreted and audited. Social Media Post Abstract 100 years later, the McCabe–Thiele method still bridges fundamental distillation concepts and modern simulation tools, remaining essential for engineering intuition and education.
