Academic writing is conventionally characterised by formality, yet recent research highlights a growing use of informal features in academic discourse. This study is a comparative corpus-based analysis of informality in 40 human-written and 40 AI-generated argumentative essays, with the latter produced using ChatGPT under standardised prompting conditions. Drawing on a framework of 12 informality markers, the study examines the frequency and rhetorical function of these features across both corpora. The human-written dataset, drawn from the Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays (LOCNESS), exhibited a markedly higher use of informal features, with first-person pronouns, anaphoric reference, and sentence-initial conjunctions being most common. In contrast, the AI-generated dataset contained significantly fewer informal markers, avoiding most conversational elements such as contractions, second-person pronouns, and fragments, but showing a strong tendency toward sentence-initial conjunctions. Chi-square tests confirmed statistically significant differences for nearly all features, indicating that while human writers frequently blur the boundary between spoken and written registers, ChatGPT consistently suppresses informality, producing a more formal style. Qualitative analysis further revealed that students employ informality to engage readers, convey stance, and create conversational flow, whereas ChatGPT maintains detachment and structural control, sometimes at the expense of personal voice. These findings contribute to applied linguistics research by demonstrating how AI-generated texts may both model and distort academic style. The study underscores the pedagogical implications of integrating AI in higher education academic writing instruction (e. g., EAP and composition courses), particularly in guiding students to critically evaluate stylistic conventions.
Recent research on language practices in universities has explored the role of English in the internationalisation of higher education. Analysis of higher education policy documents shows that in line with its role as a lingua franca across main social domains, higher education policies construct English as a symbol of modernity and internationality. This paper investigates how English-first universities fit in this picture using data obtained from a university-wide language use and attitudes survey carried out at a major Irish university. The data were assessed quantitatively using descriptive and inferential bivariate correlational statistics. This Irish university compares favourably to previous survey-based studies of language use among university staff in terms of the number of languages reported. However, staff fall into two groups, they are either 1. local and largely monolingual or 2. belong to mobile populations with diverse linguistic backgrounds, suggesting tension between market-driven and community-grounded views about language. While the number of languages one speaks correlates with positive attitudes towards multilingualism, the university markets itself from an elite multilingual or monolingual perspective. This places the major Irish university at odds as to how it views linguistic diversity and how its staff views linguistic diversity.
This study analyses the use of deliberate metaphors in L2 writing in argumentative and narrative texts. We examine both the density and functions of deliberate metaphors and analyse non-conventional metaphorical uses. The corpus consists of texts written by university level advanced L1 French learners of Spanish and L1 Spanish speakers, each producing two texts: one narrative and one argumentative. Results reveal that deliberate metaphors are essential in both L1 and L2 writing, although their use depends on writing styles. Metaphorical transfer seems to work unconsciously and is attributable to errors that come across as creative uses. However, learners actively manipulate language to generate innovative metaphors, even more than native speakers. Deliberate metaphors used in the two genres under investigation differ not in density but in communicative functions, contributing to achieving genre-specific communicative goals. Results are discussed in relation to pedagogical implications.
In recent years, research on phraseology has advanced rapidly, particularly in the field of written academic discourse. However, while continuous phraseological patterns such as collocations and lexical bundles, have been widely examined, discontinuous phraseological patterns -especially phrase-frames (p-frames) and their pedagogical application in EAP contexts have relatively received limited attention in academic discourse analysis. With this in mind, this study aims to address this gap by investigating four-word p-frames within the IMRAD sections of research articles in the discipline of Applied Linguistics. Utilizing the integration of quantitative (e.g. corpus statistics) and qualitative (e.g. manual filtering) methods, the study identified a final list of 213 four-word p-frames. Dependent on these analyses, these frames were categorized using both structural and functional taxonomies. The functional classifications were further validated via inter-rater reliability checks, achieving a high agreement rate of 91,5 %. Despite certain limitations, this corpus-based study compiles a pedagogically oriented list of p-frames that may inform academic writing instruction in EAP contexts and foster learners' phraseological competence to support effective academic writing.
Language education offers tremendous potential for implementing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in higher education (HE), as the pedagogical processes of language teaching and ESD are complementary to each other. Researchers have recognised this potential, but it has yet to be fully utilised. The study analyses HE language teachers' (n = 43) questionnaire data to determine how often they incorporate different sustainable development (SD) dimensions into their teaching, and which factors are associated with the frequency of teaching SD. The data was analyzed using percentage distributions and Spearman's correlation, while open-ended responses were analyzed using thematic categorization. Cultural sustainability was the most frequently integrated dimension into language teaching. A majority of teachers were motivated to teach SD, but only a third reported high self-efficacy in doing so. Similarly, only a third reported sufficient institutional support. Self-efficacy correlated with SD teaching motivation, and both correlated with the SD teaching frequency. Institutional support correlated with motivation and the frequency of teaching ecological and social sustainability. The challenges of teaching SD were related to time constraints and availability of teaching materials. Teachers who had access to SD materials were less likely to perceive time constraints as a barrier.
