
This part describes the basic process of transportation systems planning and travel demand forecasting. Transportation planning plays a critical role in the quality of life for our communities. Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) are responsible for carrying out transportation planning activities for communities with 50,000 population or greater. State Department of Transportation or Rural Planning Organizations conduct planning activities for non-MPO regions. Travel demand models are the key analytical tool used to support the development of long-range transportation plans and other transportation systems analysis activities. The models help planners and analyst understand future travel patterns related to how much travel is expected, where travelers are expected to go, what mode they choice, and what routes they use to get to their travel destinations. The text introduces the reader to transportation planning organizations, and covers the basics of the four-step travel forecasting process used in transportation planning. The discussion includes data needs and sources for planning analyses, as well as mathematical models used to complete various steps in the forecasting process. The part concludes with a discussion of planning applications and software use, as well as practice problems to further explore and apply the concepts presented in the text.
This study highlights the concept of capacity analysis along with traffic operations in urban areas in India. First chapter indicates the introduction of this study through which research aims and objectives can be analysed properly. Moreover, research background and rationale of this study can be also highlighted in this chapter. The second chapter discusses the literature review due to which process of traffic operations and capacity analysis of vehicles can be analysed properly. Using model and theories of traffic flow can help in managing the complexities and issues in traffic management system in urban areas in India. The third chapter defines the research methodology through which tools and techniques regarding this research can be analysed successfully. Using philosophy, approach, design and data collection process, adequate information regarding traffic operations and capacity can be recognised properly.
This chapter describes several key tools that safety analysts use regularly at local and state agencies across the nation. The text presents a fairly new method of site evaluation for safety improvements at newly constructed or redesigned sites: the road safety audit. Conflict studies are also presented as a surrogate analysis method for hazardous site identification, or even as a posttreatment evaluation tool when crash data are not yet available. A final section discusses the various methods in which crash data can be used to improve safety on our roadways. Several prescreening methods are presented to assist in hazardous site identification. Following the site identification phase, a countermeasure selection process is provided for the engineer. The part concludes with a discussion of posttreatment analysis; specifically, the fundamentals of various crash studies and their inherent flaws, and an application of safety performance functions provided in the 2010 AASHTO Highway Safety Manual to evaluate the effectiveness of countermeasures.
This part details the process of choosing appropriate geometric features for a highway. Design controls govern key aspects of highway design and are essential for safety and efficiency. The geometric features considered in this part include the basic components that guide horizontal and vertical alignment, including curvature and grades, and elements that form the cross section of the highway, including lanes, shoulders, and medians. Intersections and interchanges are an important part of highway design due to their significant impact on safety performance and operational efficiency.
The forms of force penetration curves obtained in the BS1377 laboratory determination of the California bearing ratio (CBR) have been examined from reported test data and just under half have been found to depart from the desired convex upwards shape. Six basic categories of force penetration curve shapes are described and the detailed application of corrections to each is discussed within the framework of the standard test method's requirements. The importance and qualitative effect of making corrections in a consistent manner is emphasised with examples on 13 curves. (Author/TRRL)
The Boughton and Harbledown bypasses forming part of A2 in Kent, have, since their completion in 1976, carried traffic loading for which they were then designed. A maintenance contract was awarded to Arc Construction in June 1981, to give the carriageways a further 20 years designed life. This required laying bituminous overlays up to 300 mm thick. However, with the agreement of the Department of Transport four experimental 1 km lengths of continuously reinforced concrete overlay 200 mm thick, were included in the contract; the first time that this technique had been used over an existing flexible pavement in the UK. This paper describes the history of the road, the subsequent overlay design and the method of construction of the overlay whilst maintaining traffic flows on A2. (Author/TRRL)
In road construction the accuracy and uniformity achieved in the laying of pavement materials significantly influences the road's riding quality and structural performance. To control the laying of material the current dtp specification requires that the surface level of each layer be checked relative to the design level of the finished road surface. Compliance rules based on level tolerances are specified for assessing the acceptability of the work. The effectiveness of level control procedures and equipment in achieving the specification requirements, particularly in relation to the investigated on flexible and rigid road construction sites. This paper describes the method of investigation used, the results obtained and the conclusions drawn from the work. (Author/TRRL)
Details are given of the first road repair trial at a pumping joint on the heavily trafficked A40 Western Avenue, London, made in 1977 using the Balfour Beatty Balvac method. A brief resume is given of the subsequent developments in repairing concrete roads and lean-mix concrete based roads of flexible construction. In use, the structure forms the vacuum tank relying on the self sealing characteristics of a polythene envelope under vacuum. Step-by-step details are given of the method and the apparatus used in the successful overnight repair carried out in freezing temperatures. Further field and laboratory investigations were carried out to determine the effect of the sub-grade which was impervious boulder-clay at the A40 site. It was found that the process worked equally well on the section of the A1 at South Mimms with a sub-base of highly porous crushed clinker. In this case both longitudinal and transverse deflecting cracks could be treated, one lane at a time, where the road could be fully opened to traffic within a half hour if need be. A computer model, used to compare the estimated costs incurred by delays and diversions, showed that, at 1977 prices vacuum grouting at off peak periods was more effective than reconstruction with either partial or full closure. Approximately 120 men died in the construction industry during 1982 just doing their job. This was by no means a freak year for deaths in the construction industry, which regularly equal those in the whole of the manufacturing industry put together. The main causes of fatal accidents in the industry remain unchanged year after year. These are falls from a height, being struck by falling objects or materials, accidents with machinery and transport. To try and reduce this grim total, the Construction Industry Advisory Committee (CONIAC) with the support of the health and safety executive has launched Site Safe 83--a publicity campaign aimed at increasing the awareness of the whole industry to the hazards and risks of the work they do. This paper has been especially commissioned by the Institution's Publications Committee to draw attention to the unacceptable cost in death, suffering and money which takes place in the industry every year.
