1Daily Land Surface Temperature Reconstruction in Landsat Cross-Track Areas Using Deep Ensemble Learning with Uncertainty Quantification
    Shengjie Liu, Siqin Wang,Lu Zhang

Many real-world applications rely on land surface temperature (LST) data at high spatiotemporal resolution. In complex urban areas, LST exhibits significant variations, fluctuating dramatically within and across city blocks. Landsat provides high spatial resolution data at 100 meters but is limited by long revisit time, with cloud cover further disrupting data collection. Here, we propose DELAG, a deep ensemble learning method that integrates annual temperature cycles and Gaussian processes, to reconstruct Landsat LST in complex urban areas. Leveraging the cross-track characteristics and dual-satellite operation of Landsat since 2021, we further enhance data availability to 4 scenes every 16 days. We select New York City, London and Hong Kong from three different continents as study areas. Experiments show that DELAG successfully reconstructed LST in the three cities under clear-sky (RMSE = 0.73-0.96 K) and heavily-cloudy (RMSE = 0.84-1.62 K) situations, superior to existing methods. Additionally, DELAG can quantify uncertainty that enhances LST reconstruction reliability. We further tested the reconstructed LST to estimate near-surface air temperature, achieving results (RMSE = 1.48-2.11 K) comparable to those derived from clear-sky LST (RMSE = 1.63-2.02 K). The results demonstrate the successful reconstruction through DELAG and highlight the broader applications of LST reconstruction for estimating accurate air temperature. Our study thus provides a novel and practical method for Landsat LST reconstruction, particularly suited for complex urban areas within Landsat cross-track areas, taking one step toward addressing complex climate events at high spatiotemporal resolution. Code and data will be available at skrisliu.com/delag.

2Ecological Dissimilarity Matters More Than Geographical Distance when Predicting Land Surface Indicators Using Machine Learning
    Bo Zhou,Gregory S. Okin,Junzhe Zhang,Shannon L. Savage, Christopher J. Cole,Michael C. Duniway

Supervised training techniques, such as those used in machine learning, use generally large sets of in situ data to train models that can, in turn, be used to make predictions (or prediction maps) about the Earth's surface in times or places where no in situ data exist. The purpose of the present study is to investigate, using a very large set of in situ data from across the western United States (U.S.), the conditions under which training data from a different geographic region where predictions are desired may be substituted. To do this, we train models using in situ data from level IV ecoregions and test how well these models predict surface conditions in different ecoregions. We characterize the difference between the possible pairs of ecoregion in terms of geographical (centroid-to-centroid) distance and "ecological dissimilarity." Ecological dissimilarity between pairs of ecoregions is defined in two ways: 1) as the Euclidean distance in multivariate space defined by in situ indicators designed for monitoring purposes and 2) in terms of the difference in temporal behavior from model- and remote sensing-derived datasets. Although, overall, prediction error increases with geographical distance between training and testing ecoregions, our results indicate that ecological dissimilarity can be used to predict the error expected from a model trained with data from one ecoregion when applied in a different ecoregion.

3Hyperspectral Image Denoising Using Non-convex Local Low-rank and Sparse Separation with Spatial-Spectral Total Variation Regularization
Chong Peng,Yang Liu, Kehan Kang,Yongyong Chen, Xinxin Wu, Andrew Cheng,Zhao Kang,Chenglizhao Chen,Qiang Cheng

In this article, we propose a novel nonconvex approach to robust principal component analysis (RPCA) for hyperspectral image (HSI) denoising, which focuses on simultaneously developing more accurate approximations to both rank and columnwise sparsity for the low-rank and sparse components, respectively. In particular, the new method adopts the log-determinant rank approximation and a novel $\ell _{2,\log }$ norm, to restrict the local low-rank or columnwisely sparse properties for the component matrices, respectively. For the $\ell _{2,\log }$ -regularized shrinkage problem, we develop an efficient, closed-form solution, which is named $\ell _{2,\log }$ -shrinkage operator. The new regularization and the corresponding operator can be generally used in other problems that require columnwise sparsity. Moreover, we impose the spatial–spectral total variation regularization in the log-based nonconvex RPCA model, which enhances the global piecewise smoothness and spectral consistency from the spatial and spectral views in the recovered HSI. Extensive experiments on both simulated and real HSIs demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in denoising HSIs.

4Systematic Assessment of MODTRAN Emulators for Atmospheric Correction
    Jorge Vicent Servera,Juan Pablo Rivera-Caicedo,Jochem Verrelst,Jordi Muñoz-Marí,Neus Sabater,Béatrice Berthelot,Gustau Camps-Valls,José Moreno

Atmospheric radiative transfer models (RTMs) simulate the light propagation in the Earth's atmosphere. With the evolution of RTMs, their increase in complexity makes them impractical in routine processing such as atmospheric correction. To overcome their computational burden, standard practice is to interpolate a multidimensional lookup table (LUT) of prestored simulations. However, accurate interpolation relies on large LUTs, which still implies large computation times for their generation and interpolation. In recent years, emulation has been proposed as an alternative to LUT interpolation. Emulation approximates the RTM outputs by a statistical regression model trained with a low number of RTM runs. However, a concern is whether the emulator reaches sufficient accuracy for atmospheric correction. Therefore, we have performed a systematic assessment of key aspects that impact the precision of emulating MODTRAN: 1) regression algorithm; 2) training database size; 3) dimensionality reduction (DR) method and a number of components; and 4) spectral resolution. The Gaussian processes regression (GPR) was found the most accurate emulator. The principal component analysis remains a robust DR method and nearly 20 components reach sufficient precision. Based on a database of 1000 samples covering a broad range of atmospheric conditions, GPR emulators can reconstruct the simulated spectral data with relative errors below 1% for the 95th percentile. These emulators reduce the processing time from days to minutes, preserving sufficient accuracy for atmospheric correction and providing model uncertainties and derivatives. We provide a set of guidelines and tools to design and generate accurate emulators for satellite data processing applications.

5Gradient-Based Automatic Lookup Table Generator for Radiative Transfer Models
    Jorge Vicent Servera,Luis Alonso,Luca Martino,Neus Sabater,Jochem Verrelst,Gustau Camps-Valls,José Moreno

Physically based radiative transfer models (RTMs) are widely used in Earth observation to understand the radiation processes occurring on the Earth's surface and their interactions with water, vegetation, and atmosphere. Through continuous improvements, RTMs have increased in accuracy and representativity of complex scenes at expenses of an increase in complexity and computation time, making them impractical in various remote sensing applications. To overcome this limitation, the common practice is to precompute large lookup tables (LUTs) for their later interpolation. To further reduce the RTM computation burden and the error in LUT interpolation, we have developed a method to automatically select the minimum and optimal set of input-output points (nodes) to be included in an LUT. We present the gradient-based automatic LUT generator algorithm (GALGA), which relies on the notion of an acquisition function that incorporates: 1) the Jacobian evaluation of an RTM and 2) the information about the multivariate distribution of the current nodes. We illustrate the capabilities of GALGA in the automatic construction and optimization of MODTRAN-based LUTs of different dimensions of the input variables space. Our results indicate that when compared with a pseudorandom homogeneous distribution of the LUT nodes, GALGA reduces:1) the LUT size by >24%; 2) the computation time by 27%; and 3) the maximum interpolation relative errors by at least 10%. It is concluded that an automatic LUT design might benefit from the methodology proposed in GALGA to reduce interpolation errors and computation time in computationally expensive RTMs.
