The automatic readability assessment of texts is a growing field within Natural Language Processing, with significant implications in areas such as language teaching and learning and accessibility. In this context, this paper presents Corlega, the first corpus of Galician texts classified by readability level, consisting of 480 texts aimed at adult readers. The corpus covers 11 categories and 36 subcategories, including a variety of text types, genres and subgenres. The process of selection and compilation of documents, as well as classification, follows the standards of the iRead4Skills project, which develops resources and computational models for Portuguese, Spanish and French. To compile Corlega, this work defines six levels of readability in Galician and proposes a set of linguistic descriptors for each level. Using this taxonomy, we describe the compilation process of the corpus and its current distribution -across four of the six readability levels-,as well as the main features of this new resource. Additionally, we used the corpus to train and evaluate automatic readability classification tools by fitting monolingual and multilingual Transformer models, and the implementation of hybrid models. The results suggest that, with small training corpora, feature extraction from pre-trained models is an efficient method to achieve competitive results with supervised model fitting. However, combining corpora from different languages enables the fitting of multilingual models with better performance. Both the corpus and the models are available to the scientific community.
In this paper, we detail the methodology used to construct the Porttinari-base Propbank, a gold-standard Propbank with over 45,000 arguments annotated on the syntactic dependencies of the Porttinaribase treebank. We present the underlying challenges and the solutions adopted in the annotation of arguments and predicates, and report the results of an inter-annotator agreement study. Our goal is twofold: to present the Porttinari-base Propbank as a resource for NLP and, secondarily, to provoke reflections on the dialogues between NLP and linguistic theories.
Combining knowledge from the areas of computational linguistics and psycholinguistics, this paper explores the syntactic knowledge of neural language models, specifically the principle of subject-verb agreement in Galician and Portuguese. In order to study whether the models process this phenomenon in a similar way to humans, two datasets were created (one in Galician and one in Portuguese) with 16 sentences and 8 variants for each of them, taking into account grammaticality, the presence or absence of a distractor and the distance between the subject and the main verb. With these elements, surveys were carried out with speakers of these languages to check the acceptability of the sentences in relation to the variables referred to. Using an adapted version of the datasets, neural language models for Galician and Portuguese were evaluated. The results show that although both humans and models distinguish between grammatical and ungrammatical sentences, speakers exhibit greater accuracy and even benefit from distractors, while these confuse LMs, especially in long contexts.
