Iconography of wall painting in the ancient world (ca 300 BC – AD 100) concerns both decorative systems used to decorate the walls of houses and other buildings and the figural elements within these systems. The first section discusses matters of contexts of wall systems, especially from the so-called first and second styles, and addresses the possible meaning of colours. The second part is on figural motifs which here are not seen as expressions of political or personal ideas of the patrons who ordered the decorations, but rather as expressions of mentalité corresponding with the societal developments of the discussed period.
