This article analyzes Proyecto Utopia which has been set against Colombia's protracted conflict and rural marginalization, as a territorially embedded social innnovation that couples tuition-free agricultural engineering, housing, psychosocial support, and "learning-by-doing" with a philanthropy-based funding model. Drawing on mixed methods (survey of 251 graduates; 30 interviews; 20 focus groups; ethnography), it shows enhanced employment (78% formal jobs), entrepreneurship (47%), associativity (74%), leadership, and agroecological practices among alumni who return to transform their territories. Conceptually, it traces empowerment across micro-meso-macro levels, arguing that durable rural peace requires hybrid alliances beyond state action.
This special issue of Sociologia urbana e rurale is dedicated to the study and analysis of what has often been referred to as the "Quebec model" of territorial development (Klein et al., 2012). Because of its specific linguistic, political, and sociological characteristics, Quebecois society presents distinctive at times even subversive elements in comparison to other North American societies and Canadian provinces (Alberio, 2024). For example, Quebec has historically facilitated access to education, health and social services through the establishment of a welfare state that has developed more extensively than elsewhere in Canada (Lévesque, 2002). More broadly, since the period known as the Quiet Revolution1 a process of modernization, sociocultural change, and the construction of a socialdemocratic political framework (Rocher, 1973; Fournis et al., 2021) the provincial government has acquired considerable political autonomy, often contested by other prov
This article explores contemporary processes of valorization through the social use of terms such as "biodiversity," and "permaculture," interpreted as "word amulets" endowed with symbolic and performative power. Drawing on sociological theory and ethnographic cases, it shows how crises and catastrophes disrupt existing value regimes and foster the emergence of simplified, shareable value-words. These terms do not merely describe reality but actively shape practices, beliefs, and policies, producing selective forms of protection. The article highlights the historical, dynamic nature of values and the central role of language in their collective construction.
Tourism is often presented as a strategy for revitalizing peripheral areas. However, touristification can also reshape the space and transform how residents' dwell in it. In this article, we explore how two monoindustrial tourist areas, Percé and Tadoussac, have been developed by and for tourism, while reflecting on the potential impacts on the communities that live there on a daily basis.
This article presents the results of a research into the effects of a professional theatrical work on collective development. A qualitative methodology was used, combining interviews, observations and group discussions, before, during and after the theatrical performance. The results show that the performance strengthens citizens' pride, their collective image and their sense of belonging to their territory. What's more, the territorialization of culture creates links between the professional theatrical milieu and the farming community, generating a sense of trust and empowerment.
This article examines the impact of urban austerity on public real estate management and citizen action. Drawing on the notions of ambivalence and ambiguity, it argues that post-welfare urban austerity produces hybrid arrangements in which citizens, associations and public institutions co-manage spaces and services. These practices simultaneously sustain neoliberal governance and generate infrastructures of care. Based on comparative research in French and Italian cities, the article argues that public buildings constitute a crucial arena in which the material, political, and moral dimensions of post-welfare urbanism are negotiated.
The purpose of this study is to give an overview of the extent, range, and nature of existing studies on active ageing in marginal areas. This overview will enable researchers, policymakers, and communities to understand the key challenges and opportunities related to improving older adults' quality of life in marginal areas. This takes the form of a scoping review in which Arksey's and O'Malley's methodology is adopted. A total of 41 contributions were considered relevant for our purposes. The studies selected show that the key issues concerning active ageing in marginal areas are the following: i) quality of life, ii) care needs, and iii) social inclusion.
