The recording of drinking water consumption and the associated billing of consumption are repeatedly the subject of discussions regarding the accuracy of the water meters used or their operating time. Against this background, data from random sample tests in Germany is used to analyse and compare the measuring behaviour of mechanical and static domestic water meters (ultrasonic, magnetic-inductive). There are significant differences between meter types in terms of flow-depending measurement deviations. Mechanical domestic water meters, and ring piston meters in particular, exceed the traffic error limits up to six times more frequently than static meters. Similarly, mechanical meters are more than 10 times more likely to stick at test flow rates Q(1) and Q(2) than static meters. For all meter types, there is a slight correlation between the frequency with which traffic error limits are exceeded and the volume recorded. The overall picture that emerges is that electronic water meters appear to demonstrate better measurement performance overall. In terms of recorded consumption, simple multi-jet impeller meters tend to show higher values, while ultrasonic meters record smaller total volumes in comparison. The difference between the highest and lowest values is over 20 %. It should be noted that the sample data can only provide an initial insight, as only those meters that are expected to pass the test are included in the test.
We present a highly accurate measurement setup and related methods for the efficient characterization of inductive rotary position sensors. The test bench is designed to measure analog sine/cosine output signals of the device under test (DUT) under nominal conditions as well as deliberate misalignment, such as center offset and tilt tolerances - enabling analysis of DUT performance w.r.t. the angle deviation, the harmonic decomposition, and tolerance sensitivities. We further propose a method to emulate tolerances of a target on the rotary axis, such as on-axis target tilt (skew) or eccentricity (wobble), utilizing only a nominal target by modeling these tolerances as equivalent angle-dependent DUT alignment tolerances. This method is validated with precision reference targets. With laser-guided positioning, the printed circuit board (PCB) of the DUT is automatically positioned relative to the rotary axis (runout +/- 5 mu m) in airgap and radial direction (repeatability 5 mu m, total deviation 30 mu m). The setup is capable of high-speed measurements at a rotation speed of at least 5,000 min-1 which allows precise measurement of the DUT propagation delay (repeatability 14 ns, total deviation similar to 200 ns). The proposed measurement setup enables fast and automated characterization of the DUT angle deviation with excellent accuracy better than 10 '' (0.003 degrees).
We investigated the effect of camera aperture settings on the accuracy of generic camera calibration, extending previous work with a larger measurement range and slightly modified methods. Four hardware configurations were built: (I) a monitor-based intrinsic calibration setup, (II) an integrating-sphere illumination system for quantitative aperture measurement, (III) an extrinsic-calibration jig with precisely milled reference plates and ArUco markers, and (IV) a validation setup containing two colored spheres of known spacing. We measured nine different aperture sizes and evaluated them for generic intrinsic calibration performance. We found no significant relationship between the aperture opening and the intrinsic calibration accuracy. After an ICP-based (iterative closest point) generic extrinsic calibration, we evaluated the distances between two colored spheres for validation and thus demonstrated the suitability of this method for such measurements.
As William Thomson said, "to measure is to know" - advances in measurement technology drive social progress: digital cameras enable bank transfers, atomic clocks in satellites enable precise navigation, magnetic resonance imaging provides non-invasive insights into the body, and laser measuring sticks enable contactless length measurements. Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) as mobile measuring platforms represent a paradigm shift. Until now, image data has mostly provided only qualitative information, often supported by AI. However, quantitative measurements with known uncertainties are necessary to make statements about the structural integrity of bridges or wind turbines. Therefore, a priority program aims to understand the mechanisms of action of active measurement systems (i.e. exciting the measurement object) and sensor systems on flying platforms. It investigates which laboratory measurement principles can be transferred to UAVs despite limitations of weight, space, energy, and time, and what measurement quality can be achieved. To this end, new measurement principles, sensor technology, signal and communication methods, and the analysis of measurement uncertainties are being researched. Depending on the quantity being measured, the projects are divided into the four application areas: a) geometry, b) position, vibrations and acoustics, c) solids and fluids, d) gases and particles. The results will reveal the previously untapped potential of UAV-based measurement systems, provide quantitative data with valid uncertainties, and thus improve safety of humans, mobility and energy infrastructure as well as environmental monitoring, raw material localization, and groundwater assessment.
The concept of the three-dimensional optical transfer function (3D-TF) has become an increasingly important tool in understanding and modeling the measurement behavior of modern optical surface metrology systems, particularly in the context of coherence scanning interferometry (CSI). The 3D-TF enables a comprehensive description of how spatial frequency components, both lateral and axial, of electromagnetic fields are transmitted through the optical system. This opens up a wide range of applications: from fast simulation of the measurement processes to enhanced signal analysis and surface reconstruction techniques, and to the full characterization and calibration of measurement systems. In this paper we describe our attempts to determine the 3D-TF, which was already calculated analytically, also in practice.
