The structural performance of airfield pavements is influenced by variables related to the materials and the thicknesses of the layers, and understanding their effects is essential for safe and optimized projects. This study evaluates the performance of airfield pavements by combining probabilistic and sensitivity analysis. The probabilistic analysis was conducted using Rosenblueth’s point estimate method, quantifying the impact of variability in resilient moduli and layer thicknesses on the structural response. The sensitivity analysis identified the most critical parameters by calculating their relative influence on the vertical deformation at the top of the subgrade and on the cumulative damage factor (CDF). The results indicated that the subgrade resilient modulus has the greatest influence on pavement performance, followed by the thicknesses of the subbase, surface, and base layers. Reducing the variability of all input parameters increased the estimated service life from 13.1 to 19.0 years. This hierarchy highlights the importance of quality control, prioritizing subgrade characterization and uniformity, in addition to inspection during layer construction, offering technical support for the development of rational designs.
This study evaluates the impact of asphalt pavement layer thickness variations on structural performance and life-cycle costs. Factors such as materials quality, traffic load, and construction precision affect durability, with layer thickness deviations causing earlier failures and increased life cycle costs. This research combines pavement performance prediction and life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of pavements designed by the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) method and the Brazilian mechanistic-empirical (M-E) method. Eight scenarios, including designed and as-built structures, were analyzed based on field-extracted cores. The Monte Carlo method simulated thickness variability, assessing its effect on performance and costs over 120 months, focusing on cracking evolution. The results showed that M-E designs are initially more expensive but offer superior long-term cost-benefit by reducing maintenance. A 10% increase in layer thickness resulted in less maintenance and 63% cost reduction, highlighting economic advantage of better designs. The analysis can include other factors and other M-E methods.
This study analyzes the influence of various pavement types on noise levels along selected streets in Alegrete (RS), Brazil. Noise measurements were conducted in accordance with ISO 11819-1 (1997), while service conditions were evaluated according to PRO 009 (DNIT, 2003). Road sections featuring asphalt, cobblestone blocks, and interlocked concrete blocks were selected, each presenting different states of conservation. To assess service performance, six evaluators traveled along the chosen routes by car. Vehicle noise levels were measured using a sound level meter, and speeds were recorded to determine the Statistical Pass-By Index (SPBI). Analysis of the results indicated that asphalt surfaces produced the lowest noise levels, regardless of their state of conservation. In contrast, cobblestone blocks yielded the highest noise levels under both conditions evaluated. Nonetheless, it should be emphasized that the conservation state significantly affects ambient noise, indicating that pavement type alone cannot be considered the sole determinant of noise levels.
