During its history Latin language flourished as the language of the universities, scholars, and writers. Modern Latin is the form of Latin used from the early twentieth century down to the present. One of its foundational moments was the first International Conference for living Latin held at Avignon (France) in 1956. Most users of Modern Latin promote its use as a spoken language, a movement that names itself «Living Latin». Today, although the language has a diminished role, Latin roots continue to serve as a major source for the derivation of new terms in the sciences.
