Ergonomics is the science of fitting the workplace to the worker to reduce the risk of injury. In order to reduce the risk of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), it is important to change posture frequently. The neutral posture is the optimal body position, which provides the greatest strength and control and minimizes stress. Even a neutral posture can be fatiguing if held all day; therefore, microchanges in posture and stretching are recommended. This chapter identifies physical workplace risk factors associated with laboratory environments. The physical risk factor checklist is a tool used to identify ergonomics stressors in the workplace. Reduce to the lowest level feasible significant contributing physical risk factors and consider contributing personal risk factors in the evaluation. The workers should have a basic understanding of ergonomic principles and handling techniques, recognize risk factors and injury or illness symptoms.
