Validity refers to the development, administration, scoring, interpretation, and utilization of an instrument. An instrument is valid if the instrument is an actual measure of a given construct and the scores are used appropriately. Hence, validity is presented in the cotext of how measures and scores are used. In this chapter, the authors present a historical context of validity. The chapter focuses on understanding the current standards for validity, differentiates the current standards of validity with the former triadic model of validity, demonstrates methods for evidence of validity, and provides the theoretical underpinnings to evaluate the extent to which test developers sufficiently address validity issues in their assessments.
