Narrative Trajectory Analysis: Mapping Identity Developmental Pathways

Identity development is a dynamic, lifelong process shaped by individual meaning-making and sociocultural context. Despite advances in quantitative approaches to mapping identity trajectories, fewer qualitative methods explicitly capture how identity unfolds across developmental periods. This methodological article presents a theory-informed, retrospective narrative approach for mapping identity developmental pathways through narrative interviews. Grounded in a lifespan developmental-contextual framework and informed by Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, the approach captures how identity evolves through personal and contextual turning points. This article provides practical guidance, including interview prompts, coding questions, trajectory matrices, and a visual mapping flowchart. While illustrated with ethnic-racial identity data, the method is adaptable across identity domains. This flexible, theory-informed approach expands the methodological toolbox for identity researchers by offering a structured way to analyze identity as a dynamic, developmental process.
