ABSTRACT This study scientifically analysed white pottery from the Suyang site. Compositional analysis revealed that the white pottery is characterised by rich CaO and MgO, existing as gehlenite and diopside according to XRD, reflecting the potter's intentional selection of clay raw materials. The pottery is yellowish‐white, with a dominant wavelength of 580–595 nm. The combined effect of calcareous clay, iron ion, high temperature and oxidising atmosphere gives the pottery its yellowish‐white appearance. By revealing the colouration and production mechanism of Ca‐rich white pottery in China's Central Plains, this study provides new evidence for understanding prehistoric white pottery.
