The paper discusses the role of biogenic waste and residues in a climate-neutral world, highlighting their potential for sustainable energy production, climate protection, and resource conservation. The authors conclude that a significant amount of biogenic waste and residues can be utilized to produce biofuels, biomethane, and other bio-based products, contributing substantially to greenhouse gas reduction and a circular economy (Carrillo-Rodriguez et al., 2025). In Germany, the use of biofuels from waste and residues already prevented emissions of 11.6 million tonnes of CO2-eq in 2022.
