Context Three trials showing no difference in clinical outcome between patients with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) treated by mechanical thrombectomy (MT) and those treated by intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) had the effect of reducing the number of patients with AIS receiving endovascular therapy. Based on the enthusiasm of recent positive findings from the MR CLEAN, ESCAPE and EXTEND-IA trials, the REVASCAT and SWIFT PRIME trials have been stopped prematurely due to their positive findings and their results were released in April 2015. In both studies, MT was performed with the Solitaire revascularisation device, a selfexpanding stent used to retrieve thrombi and restore blood flow, showing faster and higher rate of reperfusion, lower intracranial haemorrhage and better outcomes.
