Unconventional resources such as tight, fractured and hybrid shale gas and oil plays as well as oil or kerogen shale systems, are considered exploitable self-contained source and reservoir rocks. A better understanding of the thermal cracking of sedimentary organic matter, hydrocarbons generation, expulsion, storage and retention mechanisms constitutes a key point, estimating the oil and gas in-place, free or adsorbed, for their exploration and exploitation. Herein, we introduce a new “ready to use” method of analysis and interpretation for the Rock-Eval 6 device for better assessment of free or sorbed hydrocarbons in unconventional shale plays. This method was developed at IFP Energies nouvelles (France) and was tested on 15 actual or potential unconventional shale samples from Silurian Shale (Algeria), Mississippian Barnett Shale (USA), Early Jurassic Shale (France), Late Jurassic Bazhenov Shale (Russia) and Eocene Green River Shale at different thermal maturity stages. Results indicate a better quantification of free and/or sorbed hydrocarbons (Sh0 and Sh1 peaks) as well as a more accurate determination of the Rock-Eval Tmax maturity parameter.
Aqueous solutions equilibrated with supercritical CO2 (150 degrees C and total pressure of 150 bar) were investigated in order to characterize their respective conditions of carbonation. Dissolution of olivine and subsequent precipitation of magnesite with a net consumption of CO2 were expected. A quantified pure mineral phase (powders with different olivine grain diameter [20-80 mu m], [80-125 mu m], [125-200 mu m] and [>200 mu m]), CO2 (as dried ice) were placed in closed-batch reactors (soft Au tubes) in the presence of solutions. Different salinities (from 0 to 3400 mM) and different ratios of solution/solid (mineral phase) (from 0.1 to 10) were investigated. Experiments were performed over periods from 2 to 8 weeks. Final solid products were quantified by the Rock-Eval 6 technique, and identified using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, electron microprobe and scanning electron microscopy. Gaseous compounds were quantified by a vacuum line equipped with a Toepler pump and identified and measured by gas chromatography (GC). Carbon mass balances were calculated.Olivine reacted completely with CO2, trapping up to 57 +/- 2% (eqC of initial CO2) as magnesite; some amorphous silica also formed. Olivine grain diameter and solution/mineral ratios appeared to be the primary controls on the reaction, salinity acting as a second order parameter. During the experiments, fluid analyses may not be performed with approach adopted but, geochemical modelling was attempted to give information about the solution composition. This showed an interesting mineral matrix evolution. Under the experimental conditions, olivine appeared to be a good candidate for CO2 trapping into a geologically stable carbonate, magnesite. The possible use of mafic and ultramafic rocks for CO2 sequestration is discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
ABSTRACT The Neoproterozoic – Early Cambrian Ara intra-salt petroleum system in Oman has been the subject of several studies since the early 1990s, not least because of the exploration success that has accompanied the emergence of the play. As one of the oldest known commercial hydrocarbon systems, the properties of the source organic matter have been of particular interest. The Ara intra-salt hydrocarbon system consists of the Al Shomou Silicilyte, a rock which is composed of pure microcristalline silica, and carbonate colloquially known as “stringers”. Both occur as slabs encased in the Ara salt. In the case of the Silicilyte, the slabs can be shown to act both as source rock and reservoir. However, in the case of the carbonate stringers, the association is more ambiguous. A set of rock and oil samples have been selected from different wells penetrating the silicilyte and carbonate stringer plays to better characterize and understand these systems. As far as the sedimentary organic matter is concerned, the Al Shomou Silicilyte domain has an average Total Organic Carbon (TOC) of approximately 4 wt.%. The carbonate-prone domains exhibit rare organic-rich lithofacies (TOC of approximately 2 wt.%) and additional intra-salt shales (TOC of approximately 4 wt.%). The organic matter present in both the Silicilyte and carbonate plays is associated with a hypersaline and anoxic depositional environment, rich in sulfur, and showing very similar chemical signatures (bulk composition, elemental analysis, biomarker content, δ13C). The organic matter associated with these sequences is characterized by an unusual “asphaltenic” nature. Compared to classical fossil organic matter taken at an equivalent maturity level, the organic matter found in the intra-salt silicilyte, shales or carbonates releases a large amount of solvent soluble material, which is very rich in Nitrogen-Sulfur-Oxygen (NSO) compounds, implying a standard Type II-S kerogen. However, the organic matter differs from this classic characterization of kerogen (solvent insoluble) in that a large proportion appears to be a sulfur-rich “soluble” kerogen, which has not been previously described. Independent geochemical parameters (Rock-Eval analysis, kinetic parameters) seem to be consistent with this hypothesis. The thermal maturity of the whole set of samples examined places them in the oil window. Moreover, Thermochemical Sulfate Reduction (TSR) did not occur in these samples. As far as the soluble part is concerned, differences in the molecular (significant molecular variations for norhopanes, secobenzohopanes, carotane, X compounds, thianes, thiolanes) and sulfur isotopic composition were demonstrated, and are assumed to reflect subtle variations in depositional settings between Silicilyte and carbonate stringers. The specific properties of this unconventional organic matter has to be accounted for in the thermal modeling of oil and gas generation. Although the kinetic distribution for kerogen cracking is close to that of a Type II-S kerogen, it is slightly more mono-energetic. A compositional 2-D basin modeling (Temis 2D) was performed on a cross-section through the South Oman Salt Basin, using specific kinetic parameters measured on this unconventional Neoproterozoic – Early Cambrian kerogen (based on a linear grouping of insoluble kerogen and NSO like “soluble kerogen” kinetic parameters). The gas-to-oil ratio GOR prediction was improved within the silicilyte, when compared to the use of classical parameters assigned to Type II-S kerogen. Finally, the microcrystalline silica mineral matrix of the silicilyte plays is proposed to play a major role in the composition of the fluid, which is expelled and produced by imposing a strong geochromatographic effect on fluids and the retention of polar compounds. The preferential release of aliphatics would lead to the production of oils exhibiting a strong condensate character. This effect has to be considered when modeling the actual composition of the movable fluid in the silicilyte. The significance of the geochromatographic effect is yet to be quantified, but according to available observations, we suggest that this geochromatographic effect could explain the observed API gravity difference between oils produced from silicilyte and carbonate plays.
Heavy oil, extra-heavy oil and tar sands account for half of the petroleum resources of the world. Due to their high viscosity their production is a major technical and economical challenge. The understanding of the origin and geological habitat of these unconventional oils is crucial in order to optimize exploration and production operations. The vast majority of these heavy oils originates from the biodegradation of conventional oils by bacterial activity. The limiting factors of the involved biological processes (temperature, nutrients, etc.) are controlled by the geological situation. In this respect, foreland basins which harbour a large part of the current deposits of heavy oils correspond to particularly favourable conditions in promoting the biodegradation of large charges of oil. They are characterized by long distance lateral oil migration draining substantial volume of the petroleum system. This migration is supported by an adequate drainage system which exhibits a large lateral continuity and consists of the first syntectonic fluvial and fluvial-deltaic sediments filling the foreland basins. As a result of this migration the oil reaches shallow situation in the forebulge where the temperature is compatible with bacterial activity. The reservoirs associated with the “forebulge” are often high porosity and high permeability sand bodies, initially hosting large volume of water and facilitating the circulation of meteoric water helping in the nutrient availability. For the sake of production, the heterogeneities associated with these fluvial and fluvial-deltaic sediments have to be carefully considered. The geological models developed for the architecture and for the stratigraphic evolution of fluvial channels and incised valleys provide useful guidelines in order to characterize the reservoirs for production purposes in such geological setting. The technical difficulties in recovering these highly viscous fluids require to integrate more detailed reservoir description than usually needed when producing conventional oil plays. The Cretaceous reservoirs of the Mannville Formation in Canada is presented to exemplify the types of heterogeneities encountered in fluvial reservoirs, their rational, their effect on the heavy oil recovery and the impact of the geological knowledge on the production strategy.
Hydrogen sulphide is likely to become more common in produced hydrocarbon fluids, as the exploitation of deep reservoirs increases and unconventional resources get recovered significantly, such as heavy oils or bitumen. Hydrogen sulphide presence in produced oil and gas results in operational, environmental and treatment problems. Therefore, understanding the origin and the amount of hydrogen sulphide in petroleum reservoirs has great importance for petroleum engineers.Three natural processes are set forth to explain the generation of H2S in reservoirs: bacterial sulphate reduction, thermal cracking and thermochemical sulphate reduction (TSR). It is the TSR that leads to the largest amount of H2S. This phenomenon involves hydrocarbon oxidation and sulphate reduction and produces as by-products, hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, carbonate minerals and heavy organo-sulphur compounds. The reaction mechanisms of TSR, as well as its kinetics, are not yet fully understood. In this paper, we checked the thermodynamic feasibility of TSR, at temperatures prevailing in the reservoirs where TSR is encountered.Firstly, we calculated the Gibbs energy of the reactions proposed by Worden and Smalley (Worden R.H. and Smalley P.C., 1996, H2S producing reactions in deep carbonate gas reservoirs: Khuff Formation, Abu Dhabi, Chem. Geol., 133, p. 157-171). We concluded that they are thermodynamically possible from 25 degrees C, confirming thermodynamic data published by Anisimov (Anisimov L., 1978, Conditions of abiogenic reduction of sulfates in oil and gas bearing basins, Geochem. Int., 15, p. 63) and Yue and co-workers (Yue C., Li S., Ding K., Zhong N., 2003, Study of thermodynamics and kinetics of CH4-CaSO4 and H2S-Fe2O3 systems, Chinese J. chem. Eng., 11, (6), p.696-700., Yue C., Li S., Ding K., Zhong N., 2006, Thermodynamics and kinetics of reaction between C1-C3 hydrocarbons and calcium sulfate in deep carbonate reservoirs, Geochem. J., 40, 87-94).Secondly, we used a non-stoichiometric approach without any pre-requisite chemical scheme this time. We calculated the Gibbs Energy of chemical systems composed by hydrocarbons, sulphur, anhydrite and water. The minimization of the Gibbs Energy lead to find the most probable chemical systems at steady state. Our theoretical results are consistent with the chemical schemes set forth for TSR by Orr (Orr W., 1977, Changes in Sulfur Content and Isotopic Ratios of Sulfur during Petroleum Maturation - study of Big Horn Basin Paleozoic Oils, in R. Campo and J. Goni Eds, Advances in onorganic geochemistry, Madrid Spain, Enadimsa, p. 571-595), by Worden and Smalley (Worden R.H. and Smalley P.C., 1996, H2S producing reactions in deep carbonate gas reservoirs: Khuff Formation, Abu Dhabi, Chem. Geol., 133, p. 157-171) and by Machel (Machel H.G., 2001, Bacterial and thermochemical sulfate reduction in diagenetic settings - old and new insights, Sedimentary Geology, 140, p. 143-175). Moreover, they are in concordance with some in-situ observations: anhydrite and hydrocarbon consumption with simultaneous formation of calcite, hydrogen sulphide and water. Our results showed as well that the larger the number of the carbon atoms in the reactant hydrocarbons, the more irreversible the reaction is. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Almost all the oil production of Iran is concentrated in a small portion of the Zagros orogenic belt, the 40,000 Sq km Dezful Embayment of the Khuzestan province. The accumulation of oil results from a Cretaceous/Tertiary petroleum complex which includes 6 source rock layers of unequal importance, i. e. the basal part of the Garau Formation (Neocomian), the Gadvan (Barremian), the Kazhdumi (Albian), the Ahmadi (Early Cenomanian), the Gurpi (Senonian) and the Pabdeh (Eocene). These layers generated 99% of the onshore Iranian oil reserves, trapped into two main reservoirs, the Asmari (Early Miocene) and Bangestan (Cenomanian) limestones which contained 330 billions barrels of original oil in place, corresponding to more than 7% of the current global reserves. This paper discusses the distribution of Cretaceous source rocks in the Iranian Foothills and the Iranian side of the Gulf, and the geological, oceanological and climatic factors which favored dysoxic to anoxic conditions and the deposition of organic-rich sediments. The impact of each of these source rocks on oil accumulations is also briefly considered. Among Cretaceous source rocks, two of them, the Neocomian Garau deposited over Lurestan, NE Khuzestan and the northeastern part of the Gulf, and the Albian Kazhdumi, deposited in the central part of the Dezful Embayment, have excellent characteristics with initial organic carbon sometimes higher than 10%, Hydrogen Indices (HI) in the 600 g HC/kg C range and maximum thickness in excess of 300 m. Their organic matter is mainly algal with high sulfur content, qualifying them as IIs type. They were deposited in well established depressions included in an overall shallow water intracratonic basin communicating with the Southern Tethys Ocean. These depressions became anoxic as the result of a water stratification caused by the conjunction of high stand waters, humid climate and the existence of a sill separating the depression from the open sea. On the contrary, the Gadvan and Gurpi Formations were deposited in poorly defined depressions where dysoxic conditions prevailed in few limited areas only, i. e. SE Khuzestan and NW Fars for the Gadvan and in a narrow NW-SE trough extending from Lurestan to North Fars for the Gurpi. In these areas, Gadvan and Gurpi have only marginal potentials, TOC values in the 1-2% range and HI varying from 150 to 400 g HC/kg C. The impact of the various source rocks is extremely variable. In Lurestan, rich Garau potential source rocks are seldom associated with valid traps. The basinal Oligosteginatight facies of the Sarvak remains most often associated with Garau facies, and the excellent Asmari reservoir is breached in the Lurestan structures as the result of the Lurestan uplift during Pliocene. Therefore, only few small fields are related to Garau source rocks, accumulated in the Sarvalk and Ilam, when deposited under a high energy facies in SE Lurestan. In Central and Southern Dezful Embayment, very prolific thick mature Kazhdumi source rocks associated with excellent reservoirs, very large structures and the efficient Gachsaran cap rock, formed one of the most efficient Petroleum Systems, which would account for the accumulation of more than 95% of the onshore Iranian oil in place. An impressive gathering of giant fields, namely Ahwaz, Agha Jari, Bibi Hakimeh, Gachsaran, Mansuri, Marun and Rag-e Sefid, located in an area of 40 000 Sq km, are originated from the Kazhdumi source rocks. The contribution of other Cretaceous source rocks, i. e. Gadvan and Gurpi, is assumed to be negligible, because of their poor characteristics and their limited areal extent. The Gurpi is immature or marginally mature in most of the study area, with the exception of the NE Khuzestan and the deeper synclinorial areas of Central Khuzestan, where it may have generated very limited amounts of oil.
A freshly drilled core from the Paris Basin contains a 16 m section of Early Toarcian Shale deposition. The organic matter and carbonates in these black-shale sediments were investigated using isotopic, petrologic and molecular organic geochemical methods. Throughout the studied section, molecular organic geochemical and organic petrographic characteristics remain remarkably uniform and suggest that the organic matter is overwhelmingly of marine origin (bacterial and algal) with only minor contributions of terrigenous organic matter. In contrast, TOC content of the sediments, hydrogen indices of the kerogens, isotopic composition of co-existing kerogens and carbonates, and isotopic fractionation between the organic and inorganic carbon vary greatly and follow systematic trends. In general, higher values of hydrogen indices and TOC content are associated with the significantly depleted 13C values in both kerogens and carbonates and greater values of carbon isotopic fractionation. The integration of carbon isotopic fractionation between carbonates and kerogens (a proxy for surface water [CO2(aq)]) and hydrogen indices (a reflection of organic matter preservation) suggests that the greatest accumulation of hydrocarbon-rich organic matter occurred at a time when surface water [CO2(aq)] was extremely high. This implies that intermediate waters enriched in 12C-CO2 and [CO2(aq)] were recycled into the photic zone of the surface water masses and provided the waters necessary to produce the observed negative isotopic excursions and maximum carbon isotopic fractionations. The settling of organic matter through a primarily anoxic water column with deposition in a highly reducing and quiescent bottom water mass was ideal for the extraordinary preservation of the organic matter. In turn, these results suggest that the depositional environment prevailing during the early Toarcian in the Paris Basin was a stratified-silled basin type environment.
The present study of kerogens isolated from early Toorcion shales sompled on the eastern out-trop of the Paris Basin (from Luxembourg to Morvan) verifies the overall homogeneity of the organic matter in this formation. This organic matter is of autoch thonous marine origin. However, the occurrence of small variations related to different geogrophical locations reinforces the concept of geochemical provinces in this basin as revealed by a previous analysis of the chloroform extracts. Differences between a northern province (Lorraine) and a southern province (Avallon area, Haute-Saône, Haute-Marne) could be interpreted as the consequence of a more important detrital input in the northern part of the basin and/or of different environmental conditions at the time of deposition.
An anaalysis of soluble organic motter in the chloroform from Toarcian shales from the eastern part of the Paris Basin reveals the existence of a northern geochemical province and a southern geochemical province whose commun boundary lies in the Fecocourt region. The northern province is characterized by the influence of the continental domain (Ardennes range) with regard to organic influx, whereas no terrestrial influx is found in the southern province. These findings agree with the sedimentological indications supplied by the literature and add a geochemical dimension to the paleogeography of this basin.
The technique described here meets the need to miniaturize analyses of ails and rock extracts. Thin-layer chromatography tan be used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of small amounts of samples. This method is capable of onalyzing extracts from cuttings (5 ta 10 g of rock). This article attempts to make a critical study of the information obtained and to compare il with results using other analytical methods (liquid chromatography).
For assessing the petroleum potential of sedimentary basins, it is very important to take the organic matter contained in source rocks into consideration. CARBOLOG is a new method developed by Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) for assessing the organic content of source rocks. This method makes use of the physical properties of organic matter, which is characterized by the slow propagation of sound as well as by high resistivity. These physical properties can be combined for making an in situ assessment of the organic matter contained in the sediment. In a given well, the organic carbon content is assessed by a treatment that jointly takes into account the values provided by two types of commonly available well logs in petroleum boreholes, i. e. sonic and resistivity logs. For implementing CARBOLOG on the scale of a sedimentary basin, a calibration has to be made based on the processing of analytical borehole data available for the organic carbon content. CARBOLOG was checked by being tested successfully on samples from different basins and having different facies. The results obtained clearly show the capacity of the method to assess organic carbon contents and to continuously indicate how they evolve vertically for immature or slightly mature marine source rocks. Other tests are currently being performed for different deposit environments and for more mature formations so as to define possibilities and limits of CARBOLOG in all the geological contexts generally encountered.
Differences in stratigraphic organization of three examples of carbonate source-rock formations are compared in terms of three-dimensional architecture and sediment flux. A hypothesis is proposed to explain the observed patterns, involving different orders of relative sea-level fluctuations and climatic change. All examples were studied in the same systematic way. Carbonate and organic-matter content were measured in sections, which are correlated in a high-resolution time framework (second-order to fifth-order scale sequences) from platform to basin. The examples are the Upper Devonian (Frasnian) Duvernay Formation in western Canada, the Upper Carboniferous (Desmoinesian) Paradox Formation in the western United States, and the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian-Turonian) Natih Formation in Oman. Different orders of cyclicity appear to control the distribution of organic-matter in these formations: in the Devonian example the main control is at the second-order scale, in the Carboniferous example the fourth order is dominant, and the Cretaceous example is dominated by the third-order scale. In order to characterize the sediment flux in these depositional systems, the ratio of the carbonate fraction to the organic-matter and other mineral fractions (clays, silts) was studied. In several examples, an inverse linear relationship was found between the carbonate fraction and the organic-matter plus mineral fraction. With good evidence for the variation in the carbonate production, this leads to the suggestion that the ratio of the organic matter production to the clay input has been essentially constant for considerable periods of time.We propose that the three different patterns of the carbonate source-rock distribution illustrated in this paper are characteristic of three climatic conditions of the earth system: the icehouse state (the Upper Carboniferous example), the intermediate-house state (the Upper Devonian example), and the greenhouse state (the Upper Cretaceous example). The internal organization of carbonate source rocks would, in that case, be predictive, and directly controlled by the known dominant sequence order in these respective states. The interpretation of the inverse linear relationship as the result of a varying carbonate flux with stable background sedimentation of the organic-matter and mineral fraction has several implications. It suggests that organic-matter production was, at times, less sensitive to short-term climatic variations than the adjacent carbonate platforms. In addition, the TOC-carbonate plot may be a useful way to characterize and compare carbonate source rocks in space and time. This would be particularly important when a relationship can be demonstrated between the mineral content and the maturation, expulsion, and migration characteristics of these source rocks.
