Mesoporous carbon nanosheets with high surface areas and large total pore volumes were prepared using tubular halloysite as inorganic matrix and furfuryl alcohol (FA) as carbon precursor by a template-like method. Field emission scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and nitrogen adsorption analysis were employed to characterize the morphologies and pore structures of the samples. It is found that tunable mesoporous carbons can be obtained by adjusting FA volume concentration. Lowering FA concentration leads to an increase in the BET specific surface area and narrowing of the mesopore size distribution.

Mesoporous carbon nanosheets were synthesized using tubular halloysite, a kind of natural kaolinite, as inorganic matrix and furfuryl alcohol (FA) as carbon precursor by a template-like method. The inorganic mineral was removed by washing carbon–mineral mixture with HF and HCl. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and nitrogen adsorption analysis were employed to study the morphology and structure of the samples. A lot of mesopores on the carbon nanosheets can be observed clearly from the TEM and SEM images. The formation mechanism of sheet-like carbons was explored by using TEM and SEM images. The resultant carbons exhibit a high degree of mesoporosity (78–84%), high specific surface area (the largest is 1130m2g−1) and large total pore volumes (the largest is 2.32m3g−1). The study shows that the impregnation pressure and duration play an important role on the development of pore structure of the resultant carbons, such as specific surface areas and total pore volumes.

Porous carbons were prepared using zeolite ore and artificial type X zeolite as templates, and sucrose as carbon source. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption analysis were employed to study the morphologies and pore structure of the samples. Results indicate that the BET specific surface area of zeolite ore templated porous carbon (1070m(2)/g) is lower than that of type X zeolite templated porous carbon (1820 m(2)/g) while the total pore volume (1.39 cm(3)/g) and mesopore. volume (0.98 cm(3)/g) of porous carbon obtained using zeolite ore as the template are much larger than that of porous carbon obtained by using type X zeolite as the template, which are 1.02 cm(3)/g and 0.39 cm(3)/g respectively. The nanopores of natural zeolite templated porous carbon are composed of three kinds of pores: one is formed by removal of ore which means "templated pores", the second is inherited from template pores which we call "hereditary pores" and the third is formed during carbonization.

Templated carbonization method has pioneered a new field in the preparation of porous carbon and become the most effective approach to controlling the structure of porous carbon in recent years.In this paper,the shortage of traditional method in the preparation of porous carbon is introduced,and the development of preparation of porous carbons by using silica gel,clay,zeolite and mesoporous silica as the temlate in carbonization is reviewed.The potential applications of templated carbons in the fields such as energy storage media,electric double-layer capacitor(EDLC)and catalyst support are also presented.Further research is to be done in the field of preparation of porous carbons by using the templated approach.
Carbons with narrow pore size distributions were synthesized by using natural zeolite as template and sucrose as carbon source.The samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and N2 adsorption.The effects of the amount of sulfuric acid during impregnation and the carbonization temperature on the structure of the porous carbons obtained were investigated.The results show that the amount of sulfuric acid and the heat-treatment temperature during preparation process are important factors that affect the structure and performance of resultant carbons.The excessive sulfuric acid amount could result in the impurity retained in resultant carbons,the specific surface area and total volume of porous carbons decrease and the surface texture become coarse and dense.While the higher heat-treatment temperature during carbonization,the more structure shrinks,larger total volumes and higher mesoporosity of porous carbons are.
On the basis of analysis of structure and properties, halloysite, a natural tubular mineral, was developed for an environmental treatment. TiO2 was mounted into halloysite by using hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate at room temperature. The adsorption and photocatalytic performance of halloysite and TiO2-mounted halloysite have been examined in methylene blue aqueous solution in the dark and under ultraviolet ray irradiation, respectively. Their performance of adsorption and photodecomposition was evaluated from the adsorbed and degraded amounts of methylene blue (MB). Due to the mixture of adsorption and photodecomposition, the concentration of MB, organic pollution, in water decreased rapidly with TiO2-mounted halloysite powder, which is a faster reaction than that with halloysite-only adsorption. This new use of halloysite is leading to many interesting applications in the decomposition and elimination of various pollutants in air and water.
Porous carbons rich in mesopores and with large pore volumes have been prepared by polymerization and carbonization of a carbon precursor, sucrose, within a matrix of the natural clay, halloysite. The carbon precursor was impregnated into the pores of halloysite and mostly deposited on the external surface of the halloysite rods during impregnation. The inorganic matrix was removed by washing the carbon-mineral composite with HF and HCl. The resultant carbons were characterized by nitrogen adsorption analysis and were found to possess a large specific surface area, a large total pore volume and significant mesoporosity, without an activation process being involved. The pore volume and mesoporosity were up to 1.86 cm 3 /g and 78%, respectively, even at low carbonization temperatures (500°C). The size of the mesopores of the resultant carbons is mainly between 3 and 30 nm and the dominant pore size is ∼3.7 nm. The carbonization temperature has significant effects on the pore-size distribution and structure of the resultant carbons and carbon-mineral composites, respectively. This process is relatively simple and expected to cost less than the high-temperature carbonization process in the preparation of mesoporous carbons with total pore volume and large specific surface areas.
