The endogenous fecal elimination of cholesterol in 12 1900-gm (av.) White Leghorn cockerels 14–16 weeks of age kept on a cholesterol-free diet containing 3% cottonseed oil was found to be 20 mg/day, when corrected for the intake of phytosterol. The intestinal capacity to absorb dietary cholesterol under these conditions was found to be 210 mg/day in 12 2100-gm (av.) cockerels 16–21 weeks of age when fed 916, 920 or 1145 mg/day each day for 7 days. The capacity to absorb was the same when the average weight was 1900 gm and 2400 gm, indicating that the intestine had become mature when the cockerels weighed an average of 1900 gm. The serum cholesterol concentration was significantly increased after the ingestion of 85 mg of cholesterol a day for 7 days; this amount was four times greater than the endogenous fecal excretion.
Twenty-four male rats were divided into two groups of equal body weight. Food was withdrawn for approximately 16 hours when a subcutaneous injection of C14-2-l-histidine was made. Forty-eight hours after the withdrawal of food one group was fed for 24 hours and decapitated, the other group was fasted for the entire 72 hours and decapitated. The C14-histamine in the entire glandular stomach and the entire small intestine was decreased by feeding to the extent of 52% and 30%, respectively. Although some loss may have occurred as a result of desquamation, it is concluded that most of the loss of C14 histamine from the stomach and intestinal mucosa on feeding was due to its release into the blood stream.
While attempting to produce experimental dietary arteriosclerosis in rats, we observed neoplastic growths in animals that had been on the diet for more than a year and a half. Most of the tumors appeared to be hepatomas, and these are the subject of the present report. These lesions are of particular interest because of the striking difference between our animals, which were obese, and the malnourished individuals that characteristically develop tumors of the liver in the presence of a nutritional deficiency (3, 4).
Twenty-seven dyes, many of them being certified food colors, were fed to rats in a concentration of about 4 per cent of the diet by dry weight. It was found that the dyes differentially stain the mucosa of the various parts of the alimentary tract. The glandular stomach was stained by these dyes more readily than the intestinal mucosa and the colonic mucosa, whereas the epithelium of the forestomach showed with most dyes no coloration or only a very faint one. The mucosa of the glandular stomach was found at autopsy to be grossly swollen in many instances. Microscopically edema was often present and the cells stained poorly. They were often vacuolated and showed a loss of cytoplasmic pyrinophilia. Round cell infiltration was sometimes seen but the most striking and frequent microscopic finding was the presence of granular, black to brown colored deposits within the cells of the stained mucosa. These consisted probably of condensed or conjugated and therefore less soluble states of the absorbed dyes. When the feeding of the dyes was discontinued for 24 hours the staining disappeared. In the case of some dyes, two or three days were required to lose the stain. The absorbed dyes were eliminated at least partly in the secretions of the gastric mucosa.

DURING the course of experiments on parenteral nutrition in the dog, H. C. Meng and Smith Freeman1observed that the slow intravenous injection of a fat emulsion, stabilized with sorbitol monolaurate (tween 20®), was associated with the development of urticaria. This observation prompted us to undertake a study of the changes which might be related to the development of urticaria, since no other pure substance is known to us which on intravenous injection will consistently cause urticaria. The chemical does not cause urticaria when given orally but does so when introduced intradermally, without previous sensitization of the animal. In order for one to determine the relation of this experimental urticaria in the dog to that which is produced in man, it will be necessary to review briefly what is known regarding the nature of urticaria in man.
