The increasing prevalence of chronic illnesses among the elderly affects their physical and psychological well-being, contributing to emotional burdens and feelings of burdensomeness. This study aims to investigate the mediating and moderating role of social support in the relationship between psychological well-being and burdensomeness among elderly individuals with chronic illnesses. A cross-sectional descriptive design was employed, involving 311 participants aged 60 and older, recruited through purposive sampling. Data were collected using validated instruments via structured interviews conducted from June to August 2024. The results indicate that perceived burdensomeness has a strong negative effect on psychological well-being (r = -0.654). Social support significantly mediates this relationship, with higher social support associated with lower burdensomeness (β = -0.646) and improved psychological well-being (β = 0.318). Strengthening social support networks can mitigate feelings of burdensomeness and promote mental health, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for older adults facing chronic health challenges.
AIM:This study investigates the impact of using escape rooms as a gamification evaluation tool on nursing students' clinical reasoning and teamwork skills. BACKGROUND:Escape rooms, originating in Japan in 2007, are team-based live-action games requiring participants to solve puzzles within a time limit. They develop essential skills such as teamwork, leadership, logic, creativity, critical thinking, communication and problem-solving. Educational escape rooms' focuses on learning goals connected to curricula and are tailored to specific student groups. DESIGN:Pretest and posttest quasi-experimental study with a study and control groups were conducted. METHODS:The study involved 160 fourth-year nursing students, divided into study (80) and control (80) groups over four months, from October 2023 to the end of January 2024, in Egyptian, Alexandria nursing college. The tools used included the Teamwork Skills Questionnaire, the Nurses Clinical Reasoning Scale and a socio-demographic and academic data questionnaire. RESULTS:The study group showed significant improvements in clinical reasoning and teamwork skills post-intervention. Positive correlations between clinical reasoning and teamwork skills indicated that the escape room experience has a significant impact on students' critical thinking and collaborative abilities. CONCLUSION:Escape rooms are effective educational tools for enhancing nursing students' clinical reasoning and teamwork skills, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Escape rooms can be valuable additions to traditional teaching methods, better preparing students for clinical practice.
Background: Artificial Intelligence (AI) transforms healthcare delivery, offering tools like clinical decision support and predictive analytics. The successful integration of AI in healthcare relies on the attitudes and perceptions of future healthcare providers, including nursing students. Aim: Explore nursing students' attitudes and perceptions towards AI usability in healthcare and assess factors influencing that. Methods: A descriptive design was utilized with 600 nursing students recruited through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the General Attitudes Towards Artificial Intelligence Scale and the Technology Acceptance Model questionnaire. Results: Nursing students exhibited a significantly positive attitude towards using AI in health care (66.20 f 7.38). This positive sentiment was further supported by the high mean score for perceived AI usability (46.40 f 6.41), encompassing both usefulness (23.89 f 4.15) and ease of use (22.52 f 3.79). Conclusion: Undergraduate nursing students have shown embracing attitudes and robust perceptions of AI usability. Student gender, prior AI training, and academic level were identified as significant positive predictors of attitudes and perceptions toward the usability of AI in healthcare. Background Despite advancements in therapies, the severity of depressive symptoms continues to challenge psychiatric nurses. However, research has indicated that a higher sense of coherence (SOC) can act as a protective factor against the development of diseases and promote faster recovery. AimThis study aimed to investigate whether SOC could serve as an indicator of depressive symptom severity among clients with depression. Design The study employed a cross-sectional design and followed the STROBE checklist for reporting observational studies. Methods A convenient sample of 169 clients with depression participated in the study. The researchers utilized the Antonovsky Sense of Coherence Scale-29 and the Beck Depression Inventory-II to assess SOC and depressive symptoms, respectively. Results The study findings indicated that a substantial proportion of the participants (35.5%) had low Sense of Coherence (SOC) levels, associated with higher depressive symptoms. The severity of depression showed a significant negative correlation with difficulties in understanding and finding meaning in life and challenges in effectively coping with life's demands (r = -0.626, p < 0.001). The regression analysis revealed that for every one-unit increase in SOC, there was a corresponding decrease of 0.5 units in depressive symptoms. The SOC variable accounted for 39.1% of the variance in depressive symptoms severity. Conclusion Psychiatric nurses should consider implementing interventions to enhance SOC, such as Life Skills Training (LST), psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and mindfulness practices, particularly for depressive disorder clients with a poor sense of coherence.
AIM:This narrative review explores the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into nursing informatics and examines its impact on nursing practice, healthcare delivery, education, and policy. BACKGROUND:Nursing informatics, which merges nursing science with information management and communication technologies, is crucial in modern healthcare. The emergence of AI presents opportunities to improve diagnostics, treatment, and healthcare resource management. However, integrating AI into nursing practice also brings challenges, including ethical concerns and the need for specialized training. SOURCES OF EVIDENCE:A comprehensive literature search was conducted from January 2013 to December 2023 using databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Articles were selected based on their relevance to AI's role in nursing informatics, particularly in enhancing patient care and healthcare efficiency. DISCUSSION:AI significantly enhances nursing practice by improving diagnostic accuracy, optimizing care plans, and supporting resource allocation. However, its adoption raises ethical issues, such as data privacy concerns and biases within AI algorithms. Ensuring that nurses are adequately trained in AI technologies is essential for safe and effective integration. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE AND POLICY:Policymakers should promote AI literacy programs for healthcare professionals and develop ethical guidelines to govern the use of AI in healthcare. This will ensure that AI tools are implemented responsibly, protecting patient rights and enhancing healthcare outcomes. CONCLUSION:AI offers promising advancements in nursing informatics, leading to more efficient patient care and improved decision-making. Nonetheless, overcoming ethical challenges and ensuring AI literacy among nurses are critical steps for successful implementation.
BACKGROUND:The nursing profession has experienced a growing influx of international nursing students pursuing nursing degrees in the current era. Predicting and controlling culture shock among this special group is a critical issue as it shapes their academic engagement. Building resilience capabilities among this set of students is a pivotal necessity to buffer the effect of culture shock on their academic engagement. OBJECTIVE:To explore the relationship between culture shock and academic engagement among international nursing students, and investigate the moderating effect of resilience on this relationship. DESIGN:Cross-sectional correlational study. SETTING:Three faculties of nursing at Egypt. PARTICIPANTS:A total of 252 international nursing students were assessed for eligibility. Twelve students were excluded, and out of the 240 respondents to the survey, 233 responses were valid and were ultimately analyzed. METHODS:A hand-delivered anonymous questionnaire in Arabic and English that consisted of four parts was used to collect the data. It included students' characteristics and relevant data, the culture shock questionnaire, the academic resilience scale, and the university student engagement inventory. The data collection spans from the beginning of November 2023 to the end of December 2023. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and linear regression were employed via SPSS and Process Macro to test the hypothetical relationships among the study variables. RESULTS:There was a significant negative correlation between culture shock and the academic engagement of international nursing students. Culture shock and resilience are powerful predictors of their academic engagement. The moderating effect of resilience on the relationship between culture shock and the academic engagement of international nursing students was statistically significant, making it less negative. CONCLUSION:Culture shock is an inevitable phenomenon among international nursing students and has a negative effect on their academic engagement and performance. This negative effect could be buffered by maximizing the resilience capabilities of this set of students.
BackgroundOrganizational agility is the cornerstone of the complex dynamics for the success of healthcare organizations and the sustenance of nurses' career planning and professional development.AimAssess the organizational agility and the extent of nurses' career planning. It also sought to investigate the association between the two and the intermediating function that nurses` grit plays in this association.DesignA cross-sectional descriptive design following STROBE guidelines was carried out.Methods and toolsData were collected from 300 nurses who made up the entire population sample that we used (a judgmental non-probability sampling technique) working across all in-patient care units at Itay El-Baroud General Hospital, in El Behaira governorate, using structured questionnaires as follows: the organizational agility questionnaire, the career planning scale, and the grit scale. The sociodemographic characteristics of the studied nurses were also collected. Statistical analyses were used to analyze the data, including ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and SEM, to determine whether career development may act as a mediator between organizational agility and the nurses' career planning.ResultsRendering the findings of this study, more than half of nurses have a high perception regarding organizational agility and career planning. In contrast, the majority of them have a moderate perception regarding grit. In addition, there is a statistically high significant relationship between organizational agility and career planning. Also, there is a statistically high significant relationship between organizational agility and grit. There is a statistically high significant relationship between career planning and grit.ConclusionThe statistically substantial correlations among grit, career planning, and organizational agility demonstrate how interrelated they are. This implies that encouraging organizational flexibility and effective career planning techniques may have a good impact on nurses' resilience, which would ultimately result in a workforce of nurses who are more resilient and engaged. Additional investigation into the precise mechanisms behind these associations may yield important information for improving nurse wellbeing and retention.Nursing implicationsAccording to this study, putting organizational agility and career planning first can have a good impact on nurses' grit, which will make them more resilient and engaged workers. To encourage flexibility and growth among nurses, healthcare institutions should make training investments, provide clear career tracks, and support work-life balance. More investigation into the precise mechanisms underlying these connections may yield insightful information that improves nurse well-being and retention. BACKGROUND:Greening organizations have become a top priority for decision-makers in the 21st century. Psychological ownership can be improved through responsible administration, which, in turn, improves green behavior. AIM:Investigating the mediating role of psychological ownership in the relationship between green human resources management (HRM) and green behavior among nursing faculty. DESIGN AND METHOD:A correlational analytical research design was utilized to conduct the study following the STROBE guidelines. A convenience sample of 204 academic staff was used. Four data collection tools were used: sociodemographic characteristics, the green HRM questionnaire, the Psychological Ownership Scale, and the Green Behaviour Scale. RESULTS:Faculty members who perceive strong green HRM practices are more likely to have heightened psychological ownership, positively influencing their engagement in green behavior. Conversely, weaker perceptions of green HRM are associated with lower levels of green behavior. Psychological ownership was found to act as a partial mediator between green HRM and green behavior. Even when considering the influence of psychological ownership, green HRM has a significant and direct impact on green behavior. CONCLUSION:Faculty members who perceive a high level of green HRM practices are more likely to have a high level of psychological ownership that, in turn, influences their green behavior. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY:Workshops on psychological ownership and green behavior can foster environmental sustainability. Policies should integrate green HRM practices into nursing education and healthcare facilities, recognizing psychological ownership's role. Incentivizing green initiatives can motivate staff, aligning with broader conservation goals. Encouraging an ethos of environmental stewardship benefits both the healthcare and sustainable development agendas.
Background: In the contemporary healthcare environment, managing human resources expertise is just as imperative as having the supreme amount of working capital. Every business must constantly build its capacity, expertise, and competitive edge by utilizing its intellectual property and experience. Objective: This study aimed to assess the relationship between green intellectual capital and organizational competitive advantage among nurses. Methods: The study employed a descriptive correlational design among 350 nurses selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected from March 2023 to June 2023 using the Organizational Competitive Advantage Scale and the Green Intellectual Capital Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation. Results: Most nurses had a moderate level of green intellectual capital (Mean = 3.60, SD = 0.27). The overall mean score for organizational competitive advantage was moderate (Mean = 3.34, SD = 0.34). The overall score of the green intellectual capital (r = 0.257, p <0.001) and its dimensions—green human capital (r = 0.257, p <0.05), green structure capital (r = 0.257, p <0.001), and green relational capital (r = 0.257, p<0.001)—had significant positive correlations with organizational competitive advantage. Conclusion: Being eco-friendly has become a determining factor in the organizational competitive advantage. The study highlights the significance of nursing management in establishing partnerships with external entities to share knowledge and advance sustainable healthcare methods. It advocates for assessing organizational environmental performance and its influence on competitive edge through creating metrics, monitoring progress, and utilizing data for decision-making. Healthcare and nurse administrators are advised to set performance benchmarks, track advancements, and integrate eco-friendly strategies to bolster the hospital’s competitiveness in the market.
BackgroundClimate change significantly impacts public health, increasing the prevalence of respiratory, cardiovascular and mental health issues. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, need strong environmental literacy to manage these health challenges. This study explores how environmental literacy among nursing students relates to climate anxiety, aiming to improve educational strategies and mental health support for future nurses.Aim of the StudyIs to investigate how environmental literacy among nursing students affects their levels of climate anxiety.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was utilised on a representative sample of 620 nursing students from each academic year.ToolsClimate anxiety scale and the environmental literacy scale for adults were used to collect data.ResultsEnvironmental literacy and its components were positively linked to cognitive-emotional and functional impairments and climate anxiety. Gender differences were observed, with females experiencing higher climate anxiety. Increased environmental literacy generally reduced climate anxiety, particularly in females, emphasising gender differences in environmental literacy's impact on climate anxiety. Despite the model's low explanatory power (R2 = 0.026), the findings highlight the importance of gender differences in the relationship between environmental literacy and climate anxiety.Conclusion and ImplicationsNursing students show promise in their environmental knowledge but face significant climate anxiety. Gender differences in anxiety levels warrant attention. Addressing these concerns is crucial for preparing nurses to effectively address climate change's health effects and ensuring a resilient healthcare system. The study underscores the importance of integrating environmental literacy into nursing education and promoting pro-environmental behaviours among nursing students and professionals. Background Nursing education presents unique challenges, including high levels of academic stress and varied learning approaches among students. Understanding the relationship between academic stress and learning approaches is crucial for enhancing nursing education effectiveness and student well-being.Aim This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of academic stress and its correlation with learning approaches among nursing students.Design and Method A cross-sectional descriptive correlation research design was employed. A convenient sample of 1010 nursing students participated, completing socio-demographic data, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Revised Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2 F).Results Most nursing students experienced moderate academic stress (56.3%) and exhibited moderate levels of deep learning approaches (55.0%). Stress from a lack of professional knowledge and skills negatively correlates with deep learning approaches (r = -0.392) and positively correlates with surface learning approaches (r = 0.365). Female students showed higher deep learning approach scores, while male students exhibited higher surface learning approach scores. Age, gender, educational level, and academic stress significantly influenced learning approaches.Conclusion Academic stress significantly impacts learning approaches among nursing students. Strategies addressing stressors and promoting healthy learning approaches are essential for enhancing nursing education and student well-being.Nursing implication Understanding academic stress's impact on nursing students' learning approaches enables tailored interventions. AIM:Investigate the influence of organizational intelligence on the development of soft skills and the overall thriving of nurses at Alexandria Main University Hospital in Egypt.DESIGN:A cross-sectional descriptive design following STROBE guidelines examined the relationship between organizational intelligence, soft skills, and nurses' thriving.METHODS AND TOOLS:Data were collected from 740 nurses working across critical care units using structured questionnaires. The questionnaires assessed organizational intelligence, soft skills, and thriving at work. Sociodemographic characteristics, including age, gender, education, and nursing experience, were also collected. Statistical analyses were used to analyze the data, including ANOVA, t-tests, Pearson correlation, and stepwise regression.RESULTS:The findings revealed nurses' positive perceptions of organizational culture and documentation skills. However, areas such as measures and rewards and staff relations and communication indicated opportunities for improvement. Nurses reported high vitality levels but needed more learning opportunities at work. Significant correlations were found between demographic variables, organizational intelligence, soft skills, and thriving. Organizational intelligence demonstrated a robust positive relationship with both soft skills and thriving. Age, gender, education, and experience significantly influenced nurses' soft skills and thriving.CONCLUSION:The study highlights the importance of organizational intelligence in enhancing nurses' professional capabilities and well-being. Addressing demographic factors and fostering a supportive work environment is crucial for optimizing nursing practice and organizational effectiveness.NURSING IMPLICATIONS:Insights from this study can inform targeted interventions and policy decisions to enhance nursing practice, organizational development, and healthcare outcomes in Egypt. BackgroundApplying a unique, non-pharmacological therapy for community-dwelling older adults, such as Laughing Yoga Therapy, may have a considerable impact on their anxiety, happiness, and psychological well-being.Aim of the studyTo investigate the feasibility of applying Laughing Yoga Therapy interventions to anxiety and happiness among community-dwelling older adults.MethodologyA quasi-experimental design was used on a convenient community-dwelling. Older adult participants were selected to undergo eight sessions over four weeks. The Geriatric Anxiety Scale and Arabic Scale of Happiness were used to evaluate the participants' anxiety and happiness levels.ResultsA statistically significant decrease in anxiety level among the study group compared to the control group (Pre = 16.68 (7.35), immediate = 6.65 (2.89), post three-month = 7.68 (2.75), p=<0.001 and effect size = 0.715). As well as an increase in happiness level among the study group compared to the control group were found (pre = 54.23 (6.60), immediate = 62.05 (4.09), post three-month = 61.95 (4.38), with statistical significant= <0.001 and effect size = 0.677.Conclusion and recommendationsParticipation in laughing yoga therapy significantly reduced anxiety and increased happiness among elderly people. These findings suggest incorporating laughing yoga therapy into nursing interventions offered to older adults in nursing homes and community groups.
Abstract Background Artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing and being integrated into healthcare, potentially revolutionizing patient care and improving outcomes by leveraging large datasets and complex algorithms. Aim Investigate the moderating role of ethical awareness between nurses’ artificial intelligence perceptions, attitudes, and innovative work behaviors. Design and Methods A cross-sectional descriptive correlational design adhering to STROBE guidelines. A non-probability convenience sample of 415 Alexandria Main University Hospital nurses was analyzed. Statistical methods included one-way ANOVA, the student t-test, and the Pearson coefficient, with results evaluated for significance at the 5% level and internal consistency assessed via Cronbach’s α. Linear regression assessed the predicting and moderating effect between ethical awareness, nurses’ artificial intelligence perceptions, attitudes, and innovative work behavior. The perceptions of using the Artificial Intelligence Scale, general attitudes towards the Artificial Intelligence Scale, ethical awareness of Using Artificial Intelligence, and the Employee Innovative Behavior Scale were used to respond to the research aim. Results The study revealed that perception of AI use among nurses has a mean score of 50.25 (SD = 3.49), attitudes towards AI have a mean score of 71.40 (SD = 4.98), ethical awareness regarding AI use shows a mean score of 43.85 (SD = 3.39), and nurses innovative behavior exhibits a mean score of 83.63 (SD = 5.22). Attitude and ethical awareness were statistically significant predictors of innovation. Specifically, for every one-unit increase in attitude, innovative work behaviors increase by 1.796 units (p = 0.001), and for every one-unit increase in ethical awareness, innovative work behaviors increase by 2.567 units (p = 0.013). The interaction effects between perception, ethical awareness, attitude, and ethical awareness were also examined. Only the interaction between attitude and ethical awareness was found to be significant (p = 0.002), suggesting that the effect of attitude on innovative work behaviors depends on the level of ethical awareness. In other words, ethical awareness moderates the relationship between attitudes and innovative work behaviors rather than perception and innovation. Conclusion There is a statistically significant correlation between attitude, ethical awareness, and creativity, highlighting that ethical awareness moderates the relationship between attitudes and innovative work behaviors. These findings emphasize the importance of ethical awareness in fostering positive attitudes towards AI and enhancing innovative practices in nursing, ultimately contributing to nurses’ well-being.
AimExplore the mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation strategies used by nursing students between academic anxiety and procrastination. Design: A descriptive correlational design was used. Setting: This study was carried out in the faculty of nursing at the University of Alexandria. Sample: The participants in this study were all students enrolled in emergency nursing during the second semester of the academic year 2021-2022 and a convenience sampling of 654 nursing students. The Sobel test was used as a statistical method to determine the significance of a mediation effect by assessing whether the relationship between perceived academic anxiety and procrastination was significantly reduced when cognitive emotion regulation was included, using coefficients and standard errors from regression models to calculate the test statistic. Tools: Academic Anxiety Scale, Academic Procrastination Scale, and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire were used to collect data.ResultsThe study found that 46.5% of students reported high anxiety levels, with 40.1% perceiving moderate anxiety and only 11.3% experiencing low anxiety. Moreover, 80.4% of nursing students showed moderate academic procrastination. There is a positive correlation between procrastination and academic anxiety, with Adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies mediating this relationship, according to the Sobel test.ConclusionBased on the results, it can be concluded that there is a complex causal and effect relationship between academic anxiety and procrastination. Nursing students may resort to academic procrastination as a means of coping. Therefore, reducing anxiety, correcting maladaptive behaviors, and enhancing adaptive cognitive and emotional regulation strategies could effectively reduce academic procrastination.
BACKGROUND:With the global population of older individuals increasing rapidly, it is important to understand the factors contributing to their well-being. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between older adults' time perspective and their experiences of happiness and optimism. METHODS:A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a substantial sample size of 300 older adults from January to March 2023. The study utilized reliable and validated measures, including the Short Version of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory and the Arabic Scales of Happiness, Optimism, and Pessimism. RESULTS:The study found that older adults with a negative view of the past (PN perspective) had lower levels of happiness (r=-0.374, p<0.01), while those with a hedonistic view of the present (PH perspective) had higher levels of happiness (r=0.266, p<0.01). Additionally, a fatalistic view of the present (PF perspective) was associated with lower levels of happiness (r=-0.178, p<0.05) and optimism (r=-0.168, p<0.05). Negative views of the future (FN perspective) were correlated with lower happiness levels (r=-0.546, p<0.01), while positive views of the future (FP perspective) were associated with higher levels of optimism (r=0.432, p<0.01). CONCLUSION:Older adults with a balanced time perspective, marked by positive and negative views of the past and an optimistic outlook on the future, reported moderate happiness and optimism. Older adults with a negative view of the past and a fatalistic view of the present tend to have lower levels of happiness and optimism. On the other hand, those who have a hedonistic view of the present and a positive view of the future tend to have higher levels of happiness and optimism. Older adults with a pessimistic outlook toward past experiences or the future may require additional emotional support and targeted interventions to foster a more positive mindset.
IntroductionThe integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in intensive care units (ICUs) presents both opportunities and challenges for critical care nurses. This study delves into the human factor, exploring how nurses with leadership roles perceive the impact of AI on their professional practice.ObjectiveTo investigate how nurses perceive the impact of AI on their professional identity, ethical considerations surrounding its use, and the shared meanings they attribute to trust, collaboration, and communication when working with AI systems.MethodsAn interpretive phenomenological analysis was used to capture the lived experiences of critical care nurses leading with AI. Ten nurses with leadership roles in various ICU specializations were interviewed through purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews explored nurses' experiences with AI, challenges, and opportunities. Thematic analysis identified recurring themes related to the human factor in leading with AI.FindingsThematic analysis revealed two key themes which are leading with AI: making sense of challenges and opportunities and the human factor in leading with AI. The two main themes have six subthemes which revealed that AI offered benefits like task automation, but concerns existed about overreliance and the need for ongoing training. New challenges emerged, including adapting to new workflows and managing potential bias. Clear communication and collaboration were crucial for successful AI integration. Building trust in AI hinged on transparency, and collaboration allowed nurses to focus on human-centered care while AI supported data analysis. Ethical considerations included maintaining patient autonomy and ensuring accountability in AI-driven decisions.ConclusionWhile AI presents opportunities for automation and data analysis, successful integration hinges on addressing concerns about overreliance, workflow adaptation, and potential bias. Building trust and fostering collaboration are fundamentals for AI integration. Transparency in AI systems allows nurses to confidently delegate tasks, while collaboration empowers them to focus on human-centered care with AI support. Ultimately, dealing with the ethical concerns of AI in ICU care requires prioritizing patient autonomy and ensuring accountability in AI-driven decisions.
Background Organizational dehumanization has detrimental consequences for nurses’ wellbeing and leads to a stressful work environment. Moreover, it is very destructive to work engagement. Aim To examine the mediating role of nurses’ work stress between organizational dehumanization and work engagement. Method A cross-sectional research design was conducted with 245 staff nurses over a one-month period. The researchers used structured equation modeling. Results Work engagement and organizational dehumanization levels were both moderate. In addition, the degree of job stress among the nurses was moderate, too. The results of the structural equation modeling showed that the association between organizational dehumanization and job engagement is partially mediated by work stress. Conclusions For staff nurses to exhibit high levels of caring behaviors, this study emphasized the need to establish a work environment that employs tactics to improve workplace engagement and happiness. In addition to changing the organizational culture of nurses to eradicate organizational dehumanization and pressures related to the job.
BackgroundApplying cognitive defusion techniques to enduring psychotic symptoms, such as delusions, presents both a challenge and a promising opportunity for psychiatric nurses to manage delusions among schizophrenia clients.ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine the impact of cognitive defusion techniques on psychological flexibility, mindful awareness, cognitive fusion, and the believability of delusions in schizophrenia clients.MethodologyThis study used a single-blind, parallel-arm Randomized Controlled Trial design. Over five weeks, 70 clients with schizophrenia were randomized to either the cognitive defusion intervention group (n = 35) or the control group (n = 35).FindingsThe participants showed significant reductions in the believability of delusions, cognitive fusion, and psychological inflexibility immediately after the intervention and at follow-up. Notable enhancements were observed in cognitive defusion and mindfulness awareness abilities.ConclusionCognitive defusion techniques positively affect schizophrenia clients who struggle with persistent delusional beliefs. This underscores the importance of further investigating this approach to decrease the intensity of delusions as part of a comprehensive therapeutic intervention. Psychiatric nurses must receive training in “cognitive defusion skills” to aid schizophrenia clients in becoming more aware of their emotions and modifying their coping strategies for delusional beliefs.
