Two basic models for the breakage of uniform rods or fibers are discussed—the lost ends in which one of the pieces of each broken rod is discarded from the system and the saved ends under which all fragments are retained. Random breakage is considered as a process with an input length distribution F(x), a breakage function π( x), and an output distribution G(x). General solutions are given so that, from any two functions, the third may be obtained. Cases under which departures from random breakage occur are discussed, and a solution is given for each. Simplifications of the general solutions are show n for the two important cases of breakage independent of and proportional to length, i.e., π( x) = α and #( x) = βx, respectively. Practical application to the length distributions of cotton fibers which had been subjected to varying degrees of damage are given.
Synopsis For purposes of corn varietal recommendations, Alabama has been arbitrarily divided into three regions. Susceptibility of varieties to damage from rice weevil was the primary basis for regional boundaries. An analysis of yield data by the method described herein indicates that minor shifts in test locations would result in two separate homogeneous regions. A third region, heterogeneous with respect to yield of varieties at different locations, should probably be divided into subregions.
SynopsisAnnual acre beef gain is related to annual acre forage production. The relationship is quadratic and may be used for estimating differences in annual beef gain per acre among treatments evaluated as to forage production under grazing conditions in the same experiments. The difference‐estimating equation is: D = 0.071,18 (X1 − X2) − 0.000,001,732 (X12 − X22), where X1 and X2 are the average annual acre yields in pounds of oven dry forage for the two treatments.
