Spain is one of the main tourism destinations worldwide. However, tourism is not equally present in all the territory and a distinction can be made in terms of tourism development between coastal and urban areas on the one hand and inland areas on the other. This article analyses tourism development in Spanish inland areas, essentially based on a bibliographic review on this topic. An evolution can be observed from concepts such as rural tourism or endogenous development to more recent topics, like slow or proximity tourism as postcapitalist proposals. We conclude that inland areas can benefit from proximity tourism, and the principles of the “local turn” in tourism represent an opportunity to develop within sustainable and responsible frameworks. The use of adaptive cycles and tourism micro-clusters as analytical tools for tourism development in inland areas is also addressed. Most of these areas have large tourism potential, although proper regional planning is required. Lessons learnt from the overtourism experiences in Spanish coastal and urban destinations emphasize the idea of the need to advocate for an adequate tourism in these undertourism inland destinations.

The important role of inland tourism in revitalising territories and reinforcing or generating identity is now recognised. The book that the reader has in his hands shows through three case studies, located in Catalonia, Galicia and Murcia, how inland areas reinvent themselves in terms of tourism and use their heritage, landscape, cultural, gastronomic and identity resources to place themselves in the imagination of travellers and tourists. This volume, the result of a research project by the TUDISTAR group, allows us to visualise the processes that occur in rural inland areas and contributes, through the methodologies used, to the development of this field of research, while at the same time providing strategies for the creation of tourism products.... Tourists from different cultural backgrounds have different perceptions of the image of a tourist destination. This paper aims to investigate tourist destination image (TDI) from a national cultural perspective and to see whether there exists the influence of culture on a visitor segment’s destination image as well as their travel behavior and satisfaction. Barcelona as the destination and the Chinese market are utilized to present an empirical discussion of the study. Based on the results of the qualitative method previously conducted by the authors, a questionnaire was designed in this paper. The SPSS 22 program was used for data management and analysis. This study first demonstrates that TDI perceived by the Chinese visitors is influenced by their pro-social cultural background and, second, that the visitors greatly value prestige and social networking during the visitation. This study further discusses the reasons why the visitors greatly value prestige and social networking and how “facework” influences their travel behavior based on the concept of culture value orientation. Overall, this study contributes to the existing knowledge on the formation of perception of TDI by analyzing the influence of the tourist cultural background on their TDI.
The image of a tourist destination should be thoroughly investigated before product positioning attempts are undertaken. In this paper, components of a tourist destination image of Barcelona in the Chinese market are identified. A qualitative analysis software is used to process the data collected from a set of semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Three factors of perceptual image and four factors of affective image are discovered. The results show that the majority of the Chinese tourists prefer cultural and architecture tourism products rather than the sun and beach product. Shopping is one of the most important activities within any tourism products for the Chinese tourists. On the other hand, communication and interaction between tour guides and visitors is one of the important components of a tourism product. The results of the study provide useful suggestions for the design and marketing of tourism products in general.
The greater ease of mobilization of the urban population has led to a significant increase in second residences. This growth has occurred on a par with an increase in sports, cultural, recreational and leisure activities offered by public bodies and local associations to satisfy the demands of this temporary population, who lengthen their stay at the destination and relate to the permanent population, thus avoiding social conflicts between these groups. This paper examines the case of the Spanish part of the region of the Cerdanya using statistical data on the programming of activities published in the free local press and a survey of 154 people. The aim is to verify if there is a direct relationship between these activities, second residences and the seasonal population, as well as the degree of satisfaction with these activities.

Owing to the increasing number of contributions, related topics that were addressed, and contributing authors, Chinese outbound tourism was established as a research field in the mid-2000s. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature in the field via analysis of collaboration patterns and thematic development using a bibliometric approach. One-hundred and twenty-one academic articles published between 2006 and 2016 are retrieved from 16 tourism journals, and a relational analysis is performed by creating co-authorship and co-keyword networks. The results offer networks of collaborations between authors, institutions and the geographical origins of the research. This network analysis permits exploration of linkages among central authors and institutions. In addition, the results identify and discuss six main thematic areas of research. Significant structural characteristics of the research field, implications and unexplored research themes are presented and discussed.

Ten years after the housing bubble burst, Barcelona has experienced an increase in rental prices. This increase in prices is due to a combination of factors such as household debt, urban entrepreneurialism and the marketing of the city, evictions, investment by speculative capital, changes in tenancy and an increase in rental housing for tourists. Overcrowding from tourists is gaining ground as a concern in multifunctional cities. Through an analysis of statistics and in-depth interviews with qualified agents, it is possible to observe how social struggles and unsustainability have outraged citizens and pitted them against overcrowding from tourism and the commodification of the city. The local administration of Barcelona has tried to respond to the situation by initiating a process of regulation through urban and tourism planning. Our analysis shows that these actions are of great importance but are not enough to alleviate some of the drawbacks, such as the shortage of rental housing and an excess of hotel beds.
