As humans, Homo sapiens, we have multiple biological characteristics that classify us as a species. Netflix’s docuseries, Unknown, poses new questions about our world and recent common ancestors in the third episode, Cave of Bones, released on July 14, 2023. Focused on anthropology, Unknown: Cave of Bones recounts the discovery of Homo naledi and funerary practices that define humanity. The documentary opens in what appears to be a dark, inhospitable cave. There are 1500 individual bone fragments comprising at least 15 individuals discovered in 2013 in the Rising Star Cave System in Gauteng, South Africa. Several questions immediately arise. Are these modern human remains? Are they all one species? How would the remains end up in this treacherous cave? Why are there no other species represented in the fossilized remains? While there are plenty of options out there, finding sources that bring real-world data into the classroom can be difficult. Fortunately, a collection of materials from the NIH-SEPA-funded Jackson Laboratory provides students and teachers with opportunities to delve deep into the world of genomic research. The program is called Teaching the Genome Generation (https://www.jax.org/education-and-learning/high-school-students-and-undergraduates/teaching-the-genome-generation) (TtGG). The teacher-focused materials provide the content knowledge, teaching strategies, and resources needed to enhance student learning in genetics, genomics, and personalized medicine. The student-focused materials have students conduct classroom experiments, collect and analyze real data, and discuss the ethical complexities at the intersection of human genomics, research, and medicine. Nourish the Future lives by the motto "The future of agriculture in the science classroom" and uses the lenses of agriculture and farming to teach basic biology concepts.
