AI-powered robots can meet both functional and emotional consumer service needs through proactive engagement. Yet, excessive attentiveness may produce unintended negative outcomes. Drawing on conservation of resources theory, this research employs four studies and a single-paper meta-analysis to investigate how highly (vs. moderately) attentive robotic service influences tourists' intentions to discontinue use. Results show that highly attentive robotic service increases discontinuous usage intentions, and this effect unfolds sequentially through perceived threat to freedom and emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, information sensitivity and technology anxiety moderate the relationship between robotic attentiveness and discontinuous usage intentions. These findings offer strategic insights for tourism practitioners on deploying robotic services effectively to foster consumer acceptance of technology.
Promoting green hotel consumption is a key element in the green transformation and upgrading of the tourism industry. Goal framing serves as a common method of information presentation to encourage consumer behavior. However, few studies have examined how advertising goal framing affects green hotel consumption intentions (GHCI). This article investigates how advertising goal framing (positive vs. negative) influences GHCI through five experiments and a single-paper meta-analysis. The results indicate that positive advertising goal framing significantly enhances GHCI more than negative advertising goal framing, mediated by green trust and advertising attitudes, with nature connectedness playing a moderating role. By integrating goal-framing theory and prospect theory, the findings offer practical strategies for tourism businesses to drive green market growth in low-carbon economies.
Artificial intelligence (AI) hallucination can spread misinformation, impair decision-making, and erode trust. Despite its profound impact, research remains insufficient. Drawing on stress-and-coping theory, this research examines how AI hallucination frequency (high vs. low) affects tourists' discontinuous usage intentions through six studies (N = 1750) and a single-paper meta-analysis. Results show that higher hallucination frequency significantly increases discontinuous usage intention, with perceived threat and psychological contract violation mediating this effect, and user expectations and failure severity are identified as key moderators of the relationship between AI hallucination and discontinuous usage intention. This research offers a dual contribution: theoretically advancing understanding of AI hallucination consequences and consumer technology rejection, and practically providing actionable insights for tourism management to mitigate AI hallucination's negative impacts.
In the era of artificial intelligence (AI), robots are extensively employed in modern service industries to optimize customer experience, yet service failures remain inevitable. Drawing on social exchange theory, this paper developed a model to examine the impact of robot service recovery methods on tourist forgiveness and systematically validated its hypotheses across four studies. The results showed that proactive recovery by robots elicited higher levels of forgiveness than reactive recovery, mediated sequentially by perceived effort and perceived sincerity. Sense of power moderates the relationship between service recovery methods and forgiveness. The paper contributes to the literature on robot service recovery by identifying proactive recovery as an effective strategy and offers practical recommendations for robot manufacturers to improve human-robot interaction design and for tourism managers to optimize service recovery strategies.
Seasonality can severely impact tourist attractions' financial performance. Under this context, we take tourist attractions in a market-led oligopoly as the research object to explore how to set prices properly. We first establish a profit optimization model based on differentiated pricing during the high and low seasons, then use numerical analysis to prove propositions. Our results show that enhancing substitutability between the high and low seasons will lead to increased prices, increased ticket demand in the low season, decreased ticket demand in the high season, and increased profits. Ticket demand and profits are not always lower in the low season than in the high season. However, they depend on price elasticity, potential market size, and substitutability between the high and low seasons. At the end of the article, we also extend the model. Our findings can serve as a reference for managers when deciding on an optimal pricing strategy.
Price discrimination often results in negative emotional experiences for price-disadvantaged consumers. Building on affective events theory, the impact of different pricing agents (algorithms vs. humans) on the negative wordof-mouth (NWOM) was investigated for price-disadvantaged consumers through seven experiments (n = 2080) and a single-paper meta-analysis. The findings revealed that algorithmic pricing led to lower NWOM among consumers. Further analysis suggested that the impact occurs through the sequential mediation of psychological contract violation and cynicism psychology. Additionally, relationship norms and implicit personality moderated the influence of pricing agents on NWOM. This research provides marketing communication strategies for tourism enterprises utilizing algorithmic pricing to mitigate consumer NWOM when implementing price discrimination strategies.
Disaster caused place destruction and reconstruction affects residents' place attachment. How place attachment is restored over the long term during post-disaster recovery remains a critical but understudied topic within disaster literature. This study examined a town severely affected by the Wenchuan earthquake in China, evaluating the changes in physical and social conditions and their influence on residents' place attachment during long-term recovery. Using structural equation modeling, this research identified that the residential environment and social capital significantly affect both place dependence and place identity. Post-disaster tourism significantly impacts place dependence, and the cultural capital of disaster resilience significantly influences place identity. Furthermore, place dependence mediates the relationships between the residential environment and place identity, as well as between post-disaster tourism and place identity. The findings offer both theoretical and practical insights into restoring residents' place attachment during long-term post-disaster recovery.
The tourist-destination relationship is the core of tourism research, which has not been thoroughly investigated in the ski tourism context. This study adopted qualitative and quantitative approaches and uncovered the significance and complex causal effects of push and pull factors in promoting ski destination identity, dependence, and approach behaviors towards a ski destination. A complexity theory with a push-pull theory is extended. Our research findings delivered insightful academic and managerial implications, satisfying the motivational needs of ski tourists, enhancing ski destination performance, and establishing a positive tourist-destination relationship, which can contribute to ski destination branding and competitiveness.
Anthropomorphized robots are deployed to enhance experiences in tourism and hospitality. However, it remains unclear how service robot anthropomorphism affects customer engagement. Drawing upon social response theory, this research investigates the effects of robot anthropomorphism on customer engagement and the underlying processes through four experiments (n = 1130) and single-paper meta-analysis. The results indicate that highly anthropomorphized robots are more effective in enhancing customer engagement. Further analysis reveals that this effect is mediated through the sequential pathways of social presence and trust. Additionally, the need for status and social exclusion moderate the impact of robot anthropomorphism on customer engagement. These findings carry significant theoretical and practical implications regarding the utilization of anthropomorphized robots in tourism and hospitality.

The application of virtual reality (VR) promises unique visitor experiences in museum tourism; however, the underlying characteristics of the experiences still need to be well-researched. This research used world-famous paintings (Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night and Claude Monet's Water Lilies) as examples, combining flow theory and Stimulus-Organism-Response framework and using the experimental research method. The findings were: (1) the display methods of museum exhibits affected visitors' flow experience and intention to use VR; (2) flow experience had a significant mediating effect in the main effect, and (3) the familiarity with VR had a moderating effect on flow experience's mediating effect. The findings enriched the research literature on VR usage and display methods in museums, providing a theoretical reference and strategic suggestions for enterprises developing museum exhibits and applying VR technology.
Analyzing the tourism mobility characteristics and preferences of different tourist groups helps develop corresponding tourism strategies and targeted tourism planning. This study applied Social Network Analysis and GIS mapping to comprehensively deconstruct the structural characteristics of inbound tourist flow networks of different tourist groups in Japan. The results show that there are significant differences in the structural characteristics and nodal role functions of tourist flow networks from different regions, with Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Aichi being stable core nodes. The distance decay patterns of tourist flows from each region vary, with a significant influence from length of stay. There are four distribution patterns for tourist flow networks under the influence of spatial-temporal distance: short-stay with double-core pattern, short and medium stay with multi-core pattern, medium-stay with triangle core pattern, and long-stay with a regional pattern. Lastly, the mobility preferences of different inbound tourist groups are summarized.
