Context: The phenology and growth of a plant shows quantitative relationships that allow us to understand its biomass production capacity. A detailed knowledge of their general and particular characteristics is therefore of fundamental importance for their efficient exploitation. Objective: To characterize the phenology and growth of sugarcane forage cultivars C97-366 and C99-374 according to the planting cycle. Methods: Two experiments were planted in the spring (April) and cold (October) cycles in areas of the Sugarcane Research Institute (INICA) Camag & uuml;ey, Cuba under rainfed conditions. An experimental design of random complete blocks was used with two treatments (cultivars) and three replicates. Assessments were conducted monthly, from 181 to 368 days. The variables evaluated were: fresh and dry plant weight, dry matter and green and dry biomass production. Results: Forage cultivars did not show similar growth dynamics by planting cycles. Variations that were strongly influenced by the seasonal behavior of climate variables, especially precipitation and temperature. Both cultivars reached average values of green biomass (80-135 t ha-1) and dry biomass (30-38 t ha-1) that exceed the average reported in Cuba under rainfed conditions. The cultivar C99-374 achieved the highest productivity and stability in each of the cycles. Conclusions: Forage cultivars can be used throughout the year to feed ruminants for their high genetic potential to produce biomass.
Objective: To characterize agronomic variables in forage varieties of Saccharum spp. in four harvest cycles. Materials and Methods: A study was carried out in areas of the Florida Sugarcane Research Institute, Camagüey, Cuba. An experiment was planted in the spring cycle (March) under rainfed conditions, with a randomized block experimental design. Three treatments (forage varieties C97-366, C99-374 and control My5514) and three replicas were established. Agronomic variables of forage potential were evaluated at 12 months of age (March) during four harvest cycles (2015-2018). Analysis of variance and multiple mean comparison test (Duncan) were performed when there were significant differences between varieties. The statistical package STATGRAPHICS Plus®, Version 5 for Windows was used. Results: Statistically significant differences (p < 0,05) were found between varieties for all variables evaluated per harvest cycles, except for stem length from the first to the third shoot. The highest productivity in the study was achieved by varieties C97-366 and C99-374 with average yields for the four cycles of 85,4 and 104,4 t ha-1 of green biomass and 28,9 and 32,6 t ha-1 of dry biomass, respectively. These yields exceeded the control, which reached 83,7 and 26,0 t ha-1 of green and dry biomass. Conclusions: Varieties C97-366 and C99-374 showed great forage potential, for which their use is recommended for ruminant feeding in areas of animal husbandry farms with similar characteristics.
Leaf scald caused by Xanthomonas albilineans in sugarcane is one of the most important diseases around the world since it causes severe losses in both agricultural and industrial yields. In Cuba, resistance to this disease is considered a major selection criterion within the breeding program. The aim of this work was to detect sugarcane cultivars with stable reaction to X. albilineans by using both additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) and linear general models. For this, 16 cultivars planted simultaneously in 2015, 2016, and 2017 in two locations: Jovellanos (Matanzas) and Florida (Camagüey) in Cuba were mechanically inoculated with a bacterial isolate previously characterized by sequencing its DNA fragment. Disease severity was recorded in plant cane and first ratoon, and results were consistent in both analyses and revealed that L55-5 and C323-68 were the most susceptible cultivars and C1051-73 was the most resistant; however, C1051-73, C275-80, C86-12, C88-382, C89-147, My5514, and Ty86-28 were the most stable across the years and localities evaluated. Results will allow adapting the methodology for the evaluation of the reaction to leaf scald of new sugarcane cultivars.
In Cuba, sugarcane brown rust (Puccinia melanocephala) is one of the most important diseases and orange rust (Puccinia kuehnii) is considered a potentially dangerous disease. The objectives of the present investigation were: to quantify the development of brown and orange rust; to determine the influence of the planting time and age of the plants on the severity of these diseases; and the period in which the levels of both rusts are the highest. It was found that the months of planting have a very similar influence on the manifestation of the symptoms of both rusts with greater affectation in the plantations that were carried out from July to December and in the month of April. The severity of brown rust was significantly higher from three to five months of age after planting, however, in orange rust the severity remained above the average observed until seven months. The severity of orange rust increased with the age of the plants in the plantations that were carried out from January to April. Unlike brown rust, regardless of the age of the plants, the severity of orange rust can be increased when favorable environmental conditions exist.
The experiment was carried out in the Territorial Research Station of Sugarcane Center Oriental Camaguey with 16 cultivars selection from 2009 to 2010, evaluated by two scales, one quantitative and one qualitative. Nine known reaction patterns were used and analyzed, for the quantitative scale, the amount of pustules, length of the most frequent pustule and length of the largest pustule allowed to calculate the percentage of pustules per square centimeter. For qualitative case the percentage of involvement was visually observed. The in uence of the environment on the manifestation of the disease was taken into account. The results showed that the qualitative scale masks the true behavior of the disease, mainly in those of the intermediate behavior, while the quantitative one provides a more reliable reaction and the individuals are grouped correctly in their respective degrees. The climatic variables provided a favorable environment for the development of brown sugarcane rust.
Context: At present, high-potential agricultural and industrial sugarcane clones are critical at the beginning of the harvest to replace the cultivars that have reduced their productivity after years of exploitation and resistance to the major pests and diseases that attack the crop. Aim: To evaluate the agro-industrial potential of three new promising sugarcane clones in dryland. Methods: A randomized experimental block design with five treatments and three replicas was used. The treatments were three promising clones (C13-369, C13-370 and C13-383), and two commercial cultivars (C86-12 y C1051-73) used as controls. The agro-botanical characteristics and crop yields, along with the juice quality parameters at the beginning of the harvest (December), at 12 months of plant’s age. Results: Clones C13-383 and C13-370 demonstrated a better performance than the controls, reaching higher crop yields than 195 t ha-1 of millable sugarcane, and 30 t Pol ha-1. The crop yields of C13-369 (164.48 t sugarcane t ha-1) and industrial yields (25.53 t Pol ha-1) were similar to cultivar C86-12 and higher than C1051-73. Conclusions: The three promising clones have a high genetic potential for sugar production, confirming its possible use as early-maturation cultivars to be harvested at the beginning of production.
The objective of this study was to determine the time of planting and the most favorable months of the year for the development of sugarcane orange rust (caused by Puccinia kuehnii) in Cuba. During the 2016–2018 period, susceptible cultivar C01-227 was established in experimental plots in different months and years of planting. The orange rust was more severe in the plantations that were carried out from April to September, mainly in August and September, and lower in January, February and March. Infection and severity of the disease were favored with an average air temperature range between 20 and 24 °C, minimum of 14–18 °C and maximum below 30 °C, accompanied by relative humidity greater than 80%.

Context: One of the main limiting factors of cattle production in Cuba is linked to low availability of quality pasture in sufficient amounts, during the dry season. Sugar cane has anatomical and physiological features that offer advantages as food and energetic supplement to ruminants. Objective: To characterize 12 varieties of sugar cane for cattle nutrition. Methods: Phenological evaluations were made and biomass production was determined in a study conducted at the Territorial Station of Sugar Cane Research (ETICA), mid-east Camagüey, in dry lands. A randomized block experimental design was made, consisting of 12 treatments (varieties) and three replications. The phenological composition of the stump (stem, top, and whole) was determined at 14 months in all the varieties. Agronomic variables plant height, stem diameter, number of stems m-2, active leaves, and production of green biomass by fractions and as a whole, were determined as well. Results: The study demonstrated the existence of no significant differences in the phenological composition among the varieties. Concerning variables crop yield and green biomass production, varieties C92-325, C86-12, C99-374, C90-530, and C97-366 showed the greatest potential. Conclusions: Its use is recommended in the major cattle raising areas in the province and the country with similar edaphoclimatic conditions to the experimental area.
