ABSTRACT The article presents the latest (2025) iteration of the Harbingers longitudinal project on early career researchers (ECRs), artificial intelligence (AI) and scholarly communications. In conversation with a purposive and diverse sample of more than 60 ECRs in six countries and numerous subjects, we present an evaluation of a pressing issue: what impact will AI have on their work and career? An important issue is that widespread media speculation suggests that it is entry‐level positions that will be hit hardest by AI. While ECRs were asked 50 plus questions during interviews, none were directly asked about changes to job security and employment prospects, yet much of relevance was volunteered in answering related AI questions. Adding a new methodological dimension to the Harbingers project, we employed AI (NotebookLM) for an initial qualitative analysis of the interview data, with findings reviewed and corrected by the national interviewers. We conclude that AI is a double‐edged sword which has huge potential as well as posing significant challenges. The AI‐assisted analysis proved effective at identifying broad themes, though human oversight was essential to capture nuance, differences between cohorts, and unusual cases. Finally, given that we were working with a select and relatively small sample to inform a larger study, the data should be seen as illuminating and filling a research lacuna, rather than a definitive result in a fast‐changing field.
This literature review sets the scene for the new Harbingers study: Gen Z researchers – the scholarly attitudes and behaviours of the ‘new’ researchers of the future. Reported here is what is already known to be the consequences of the integration of AI into academe for researchers, in general, and for early career researchers, in particular, exploring inter alia how the new generation of ECRs might fit into the AI developments taking place. The review first looks at the realities awaiting the new researchers, fashioned as these have been by the consequences of the integration of AI into their activities. Next, attempting to understand from the literature how Gen-Z ECRs might fit into the developments taking place, the review examines those generational characteristics and specific circumstances of theirs that might have an impact on their entrance to academe. As we found no studies on Gen-Z researchers, aside from a pathfinding study that we have conducted, we depended on clues seeded in the wider literature on Gen-Zs in general, as well as on post-docs or novice researchers. There is some basis to conclude that Gen-Z ECRs will be more pragmatic in their approach to the integration of AI tools into their work for the sake of efficiency. However, the jury is out on their transformative powers.
This paper is a research update and one that will help us better research and understand the industry. To this end it reports on important changes to the Harbingers international longitudinal study of the scholarly communications of early career researchers, whose finding have been widely reported for the past decade (around a 100 articles published). It covers the set-up and early progress of a pilot project, just started, investigating the new researchers of tomorrow -Generation Z (Gen Z), the successors to the Millennials who have always been our main focus (H5z). The project also employs a new way for analysing the conversational, open interview data, which is a Harbinger hallmark and this should speed the analysis of this data considerably.
The goal of this paper is to deepen the concepts and practice of digital accessibility to people with disabilities. In particular it builds on the wider concept of sustainability. It also addresses the impact on libraries, the relevant standards and processes and finally reports an overview of the state of the art in implementation through interviews with librarians.
Changing business models in scholarly publishing means that researchers have increased choices as to where to submit their articles. Choices are made on the basis of perceived quality of the journal, the speed of publishing, and how close a match there is between the journal scope and the article topic. Additionally, there is an increasing concern as to whether the journals are predatory. This paper reports on a study which sought to understand how health researchers go about selecting where to publish and the support that they receive in this regard from librarians and related staff. The research confirms that knowledge of a specific journal is still the predominant factor for researchers and that they prefer to rely on their own judgment. Librarians are providing the tools such as databases and whitelists by which better choices can be made whilst exploring new roles in advising and training researchers. Predatory journals are being selected by some, chiefly as a consequence of a lack of awareness amongst researchers and the need for some to publish swiftly and at low cost.
This article presents an up‐to‐date portrayal of the greatly changed landscape of scholarly journal publishing and identifies the emerging trends characterizing it. We consider the attributes, novelty, and disruptive potential of different models, which range from improvements to the extant model to attempts at reconfiguration and transformation. We propose that journal transition can be seen as falling into three categories. The first is enhanced models of the traditional scholarly journal, which typically afford enriched functionality that breaks the bonds of the printed page whilst otherwise remaining wholly traditional in their offerings. The second category is innovative models of the traditional scholarly journal, which aim at supporting the journal in performing its traditional roles through convention‐altering ways. The third category is the possible alternatives to the traditional journal, which represent a move towards alternative modes of knowledge dissemination. This review shows that each of the models identified makes contributions to enriching the reporting and showcasing of scholarly output. They also make it more effective and more efficient. However, we conclude that none of the possible alternatives being discussed can serve as a full‐fledged alternative to the journal.
In this paper we explore Linnaeus's use of the name Dictamnus albus L. (Purple Dittany, Burning Bush) which distinguished this species from Origanum dictamnus L. (Cretan Dittany) a labiate endemic to the island of Crete.Linnaeus's name for the species did not intend to reflect its flower colour but was based on the medicinal name for the white roots of the plant.Because Linnaeus's type specimen is based on plants with purple stems and purple-veined flowers, we publish here the name Dictamnus albus var.albiflos (Rchb.)J. Compton & Akeroyd, comb.nov.for plants with white flowers. This feature distinguishes these plants from the more widespread typical variant frequently referred to, especially in the horticultural literature, as D. albus "var.purpureus", an invalid name.We also designate a neotype for var.albiflos and lectotypes for ten of the names within the synonymy of D. albus var.
ABSTRACT International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 3297 governs the assignment of International Standard Serial Numbers (ISSNs) for continuing resources worldwide. It is subject to systematic review every five years and, in 2017, an ISO Working Group was set up to review the standard. This working group took the decision to survey the views of stakeholders including publishers, libraries, and others. This article reports on the global survey that was undertaken, describing the questions and answers about which the committee sought opinions. It also sought details on the respondents to provide context. The replies are summarised in chart form with conclusions and an appraisal of the key issues, which suggest that whilst respondents are supportive of expanding the ways in which the ISSN is deployed, they are less convinced of the need for more ISSNs for any given title. They are split on the need for the structure of the ISSN to be revised but there is strong support for the notion of a “Family ISSN” that would describe resources that are linked through, for example, title changes or geography or language. The article notes the next steps to be taken.
Key points Library discovery systems have become successfully embedded in many academic and specialist libraries. Such systems require excellent metadata to ensure discoverability of content and increasingly publishers are charged with delivering that. Libraries’ traditional role in organizing their collections for effective discovery is being usurped by these outsourced systems.
Purpose - To provide a review of the interface between e-learning, digital libraries and learning content. Design/methodology/approach - A review of current thinking and activity surrounding the delivery of content in e-learning systems. Some analysis of information concerns and commentary on future scenarios. Findings - The paper investigates the reality of information management in e-learning practice. It looks at types of information extant in systems and analyses links between (virtual) learning environments, digital libraries and web content. It examines the potential for reuse of material in a university context and the supporting standards and technology. Research limitations/implications - Looks particularly at UK and US context but also has an international dimension. Originality/value - It brings together a disposable set of issues to provide a discursive but practical summary of the topic. It will be of value to an information manager faced with managing content in a learning Organisation.

Romania retains significant resources of wildflower-rich lowland grassland. These farm grasslands, especially the hay-meadows, are of major international conservation importance, supporting an abundance of plants, animals and vegetation communities that have disappeared from most of Europe. The Saxon villages area of southern Transylvania in particular comprises a High Nature Value farmed landscape, where rich biodiversity co-exists alongside traditional agriculture. Continued traditional management is required to maintain the rich mosaic of habitats. Landscape protection and sustainable development must reconcile conservation of grassland and other biodiversity-rich habitats with the provision of adequate incomes and community infrastructure. Fundaţia ADEPT (Agricultural Development and Environmental Protection in Transylvania), has been established to address these issues, and has placed special emphasis on permanent grasslands, which occupy a central position in plant conservation, high-quality local food products and eco-tourism in the Saxon Villages. In December 2008 habitats and species in the heart of the area, Tarnava Mare (85,000 ha), acquired protection within the EU's Natura 2000 network. This designation will facilitate the provision of financial incentives for farmers to conserve the geographical, cultural and biological elements of the landscape.
Information Architecture is a part of Information Technology Architecture, and has attracted interest through e-business and e-government initiatives as well as through the general popularity of Service Oriented Architecture. In many ways there is nothing new about Information Technology Architecture; however both public and private sector organisations are becoming freshly receptive to talking about the strategic shaping of Information Technology using the language of Architecture. Information Architecture is a core responsibility of Information Technology management, and is as much organisational as technical, drawing on the breadth of the Information Systems field. This paper reviews the literature on Information Architecture to bring together a number of key issues within an overarching architectural perspective. It argues that its current topicality offers Information Systems practitioners a renewed opportunity and mandate to pursue an Information Architecture strategy, and offers academics a renewed incentive to research this area.
The Târnava Mare EU Site of Community Interest (SCI), Romania, is a landscape of high grassland biodiversity, which includes small areas of xeric grasslands. These forest-steppe associations have some unique habitat species compositions and contain small populations of EU Habitats Directive and Romanian red-listed plant species. The grasslands are in need of a conservation strategy that will fully describe their legal conservation status, identify threats and deliver their management requirements. The conservation programme is discussed with regard to a newly discovered and exceptional stand of xeric grassland allied to ‘stony steppe’ formations, which is presented as an example of the factors involved in the protection of such sites.
Summary E-government has become pervasive in many parts of the world in various forms and can be defined in multiple ways. However it essentially looks at how ICT and the web in particular can be adopted to improve how government runs and especially how it interacts with citizens. It is possible to categorise e-gov- ernment activities and what emerges is the central role information plays in enabling the delivery of effective services. This paper looks at existing and emerging e-government developments based on a specification of information architectures. It looks at how basic classifications can be used to ensure the flow of information across distributed services and enable accurate data man- agement and goes on to present a case study of a government agency.
